The Yankees have found their infield insurance.
On the eve of Opening Day, the Yankees are acquiring utility infielder Jon Berti from the Marlins in exchange for outfield prospect John Cruz, The Post’s Jon Heyman confirmed on Wednesday.
Berti, 34, can play third base, second base and shortstop, plus has experience in all three outfield spots.
He hit .294 last season with a .748 OS and 16 steals in 133 games last season.
It’s a three-team deal. The Yankees are dealing Ben Rortvedt to the Rays, and the Rays are sending Shane Sasaki to the Marlins, along with Cruz.
Seems like a good return for everyone involved. I hate seeing Rortvedt on the Rays, since they seemed like the obvious spot for him all offseason, but at least the Yankees got a very nice return in Berti. The guy can hit a little, and defend really nicely, and can truly fucking RUN. This dude is FAST.
So he’s very much an ideal utility infielder. Great pickup.

My brother’s fantasy draft was last night, and I helped him with it, and I was researching when to theoretically draft Cole, and there was a good bit on some site talking about betting on guys recovering from injuries, and it was something along the lines of, “Does it ever really pay off to bet on a guy recovering, especially with Spring injuries?” So…yeah…it definitely is a bit depressing.
That was one of my points in the last post. I don’t think it’s crazy to count on Cole coming back. I do think it’s crazy to count on a full and “on time” recovery.

Baseball Savant had this dude at an 89 for baserunning, 95 sprint speed. Also rocking a 2 (!) for exit velocity. Pretty nice .337 lifetime OBP.

With DJLM out, I would have guessed Verdugo, but Gleyber is fine. It would be nice if Volpe starts walking and can be a viable leadoff option.
Also surprising to see Cabrera over Berti.
I mean, Berti JUST got here, so I can see not wanting to throw him out there right away.
