I think we should coin a new stat, Overestimated OPS, to evaluate Cashman’s decisions. It’s easy to compute – just pick your time frame and take the difference between the pre-acquisition and post-acquisition OPS. So if we compare McMahon with Colorado to McMahon with New York, you get an OOPS of .107, or an OOPS+ of 14.
To evaluate the decision to give Grisham a QO, consider his stats with the Yankees before and after the QO, and you get an OOPS of .072, or an OOPS+ of 19. So Grisham’s QO isn’t as big an OOPS as the trade for McMahon, though the OOPS+ is still notable.
