Yankees.com: 7 K’s, 6 zeros, a pass interference call: Cole’s latest outing had it all

Gerrit Cole’s evening began with a tongue-in-cheek call of pass interference and a smattering of verbal fireworks directed toward the umpiring crew. It concluded with high fives throughout the Yankees’ dugout.

Cole struck out seven over six scoreless innings on Tuesday, continuing to pick up momentum in his return from Tommy John surgery in a 3-2 victory over the White Sox at Rate Field. Yankees manager Aaron Boone said his ace seems to have “his competitive sea legs” under him now, and Cole agrees.

“My instincts are sharper, my reads are better,” Cole said. “I’m in the flow of things. I’m getting pitch ideas or pitch locations that are proving to be the right ones. That comes with sharpening up all facets of the game, and our catchers have been great. They deserve a lot of credit for the run prevention.”

What an interesting game. Cole was excellent all game…except for one inning when he threw the third-most balls he had ever thrown in an inning in his CAREER. That also turned his outing from a game where the bullpen would have most of the night off to a night here Headrick and Bednar both had to pitch AGAIN. They have both looked a bit off lately, and I fear they are overworked.

The offense did JUST enough. Anthony Volpe has been playing pretty well lately.
