From Bryan Hoch:
It turned out that Jazz Chisholm Jr.’s biggest swing of the night would not be the one that produced a ninth-inning homer, providing an all-too-brief tease that the Yankees’ slumbering offense was about to erupt in this American League Division Series.
No, as much as Chisholm savored his trot around the basepaths, the talking point may have come a few minutes later in the aftermath of the Yankees’ 4-2 Game 2 loss Monday night to the Royals. With the series switching venues to Kansas City, the outspoken infielder-outfielder all but guaranteed that his team would be the one advancing.
“It still feels the same, that we’re going to win it,” Chisholm said. “I don’t feel like anybody feels any different. We’re going to go out there and do our thing still; we still don’t feel like any team is better than us. We had a lot of missed opportunities tonight, so they just got lucky.”
Number one rule of not being a douche about a playoff loss, never say the other team got lucky. Even if you truly believe that the other team got lucky. Even if there is something to be said for the fact that the other team got lucky. You don’t SAY that the other team got lucky, as it makes you sound like a douchebag.
And really, the biggest story of the game was Rodon collapsing after being dominant to start, not the Yankees being unlucky. He allowed four fucking runs, ya know? It’s not like they lost 3-2, they lost 4-2. They were only within two runs with just three outs left in the game and the 7-8-9 hitters up.
So yes, did the Yankees have a lot of bad luck in the game with BABIP? No doubt, but that shit happens. They need to do better. It wasn’t luck, it was their starter being a headcase who collapsed after allowing a solo home run to a good hitter, like a fucking LUNATIC. Who falls apart from a fucking SOLO home run to a GOOD HITTER? That was the game right there. The Royals didn’t score at all beyond that one inning, but it was enough. Rodon’s stupid look on his face on the home run is the featured image.
I think the Yankees are the better team still, but they’ve routinely played down to their level of competition throughout the season, so it should be no surprise to see them do the same against the Royals. They’re probably going to split the next two in KC, then have to win Game 5 with this same fucking headcase again. NOT GOOD!
One benefit, though, is if the Yankees do somehow win Game 3, then Gerrit Cole is a DIFFERENT kind of headcase for Game 4. I think he’ll be excellent in Game 4, it’s just a question of whether he’ll be excellent to tie the series, or if he’ll be excellent to win the series.
They can console themselves all winter with that thought.
They are a 500 team. You are what your record says you are and for over half a season they played 500 ball. “We play today we have a 50% chance of winning today; das it.”
I like Jazz Chisholm, but boy does he say a lot of stupid shit.
Aaron Judge is 1 for his last 12 with 9 K’s and 2 BB’s.
Aaron has swung the bat 34 times over that stretch. He has put the ball in play 3 times. All 3 balls in play were breaking balls.
Aaron is having a hard time squaring up baseballs and it looks like his back foot isn’t working like it typically does.

Boone 14-17 in playoffs. I can’t find what I want but I’m guessing Torre and Girardi did much better,
Girardi 28-24.
Torre 84-58, 76-47 with the Yankees.
Could an early exit cost Boone his job? Soto seems to like Boone. Retaining Soto would be like the only reason to retain Boone.
At one point (after the 2000 WS) Torre was 46-15. That’s crazy. That’s better than the 1998 Yankees but only against top tier teams
Mutts biggest favorites to win the World Series since 98 Yankees. Destiny has chosen them.
The Mets really have been amazing this playoffs.
They’ll look even better next season after they sign Soto.
Five of the Mets 7-runs were not from HRs, including twice with bases loaded singles plating 4-runs.
King looking good except a lazy breaking ball to Betts.
Mets/Padres NLCS is going to be wild.
[Dodgers team prayer] Lord, I see how you’ve helped the Yankees choke in the playoffs, and I want that for me
Buehler, a rough 2nd inning.
Dodger pitching staff a mess.
This is an interesting turn of events.
King, ugh.
I’m super cool with a Padres World Series win (provided it isn’t over the Yankees, of course) so long as King gives up five runs in each win.
They can’t win the World Series because they won’t be the NL champs. That’s already been determined.
Must be nice to have a reliever who throws 100.
All 11 runs scored in the first 2 1/2 innings as Padres win 6-5.
Sweeps month, Nielsen only counts the first three innings. They were scripted.
Updated series prices at FD:
Yankees -158 (59.3% implied win prob. after removing the vig)
Royals +134
KC 3-1: +340
KC 3-2: +330
NY 3-2: +220
NY: 3-1 +195
My fair prices:
NYY -121/KC +121 (Yanks 54.8%)
KC 3-1: +323
KC 3-2: +362
NY 3-2: +279
NY 3-1: +253
You’d never guess those odds reading RLYW.
Detroit, the Phillies, the Padres and the Yankees is what I’d want.
Cleveland, the Mets, the Padres and the Royals is what we’re going to get.
This article is overflowing with factors suggesting the potential plausibility of my “low/high run scoring environment” theory”.
I know how I’d build an equation to account for it if… AI weren’t proving itself too stupid to simply count publicly available stats correctly.

Fascinating stuff.
Did you know this, for instance?
“the glaring difference in Batting Average on Balls In Play – i.e., what rate of non-homer batted balls became hits? – between Kauffman’s .305 (fourth-highest) and Yankee Stadium’s .271 (dead last).”
Yankee stadium, especially DNYS has always had a mistaken reputation as a hitter’s ballpark. It does inflate HRs, mostly to lefties (and even that has been subdued after a ridiculous first season), but suppresses all other offense.
Clearly true!
But would you have guessed that it’s DEAD LAST in terms of BABIP allowed?
I would not, how long of a sample size?
I thought it would be just for a season, but it turns out it’s true for at least a 4-season stretch, 2009-2012:
https://blogs.fangraphs.com/babip-park-factors-and-the-batted-ball-connection/
AND it’s true over the LAST THREE SEASONS:

Since 2008, it’s 34th of 41 parks with .287 – the worst is .282, the best is .387, although that’s London, so discard it – then the best is Coors, with .329, so – discard it – then the best is Fenway with .317, so given that spread, the .287 is probably within margins of error for last place.
So far the other two WC teams are up 2-1 over the first place teams. Let’s hope that stops tonight, but I would not bet on it. Not if judge doesn’t even hit the ball.

I’m honestly surprised that they haven’t given Rice a shot.
Berti didn’t have a fantastic game… but I guess it was good enough to compel Boone to bench him.
It’s not a big deal, per se, but I was irked when it first happened, and I’m still irked at it now, these teams adding buyout guys for nothing. KC shouldn’t be able to add their #5 and #6 hitters just because another team is cheap as fuck.
Brian, didn’t they make a rule back during the Yankee dynasty run to prevent additions too late in the season from being on the postseason roster? There was a pitcher… something to do with Toronto… that had something to do with it… am I making this up? I don’t think so.
There has always been a rule about it, which is why teams now cut their players on the last day of August, so they can latch on to contenders. St. Louis traded for Tommy Pham, then cut him a month later to save, like, $50,000.
Funny! Turned on the Tigers-Indians game as the announcers stated: now stay tuned for Kate Smith.
I presumed it was the 7th inning stretch and God Bless America.
But it turns out the Indians have a reliever named Cade Smith.
Brian, an obviously unobjectionable post is awaiting moderation, when you have a moment!
Tigers take a 2-1 game advantage.
Pretty interesting that we may see all 6 first place teams eliminated before the LCS!
In 3 innings, Suarez has given up 7 baserunners, but no runs.
Does it bode well or ill?
In the meanwhile, one walk is all Quintana’s allowed.
Boone we have a lot of guys that are capable of beating you. For instance?
