The Yankees have never struck out more in consecutive games than they have the past two nights, and their most perplexing one was easy to identify: José Caballero dropped his bat in the second inning before the pitch even crossed home plate.
That came as the result of what manager Aaron Boone said was a “strategic decision” on Caballero’s part, one that merited a dugout chat. The infielder said he was trying to stop chasing so many breaking balls and Boone said he “didn’t hate” the explanation; he had more issues with the rest of the game.
Paul Goldschmidt’s whiff to end the seventh inning marked the club’s 31st in the past two games, establishing a franchise record they’d rather not have claimed in their 6-4 loss to the Rays on Tuesday evening at Tropicana Field.
“The performance tonight was terrible,” said Goldschmidt, who struck out in all four at-bats, extending the veteran’s skid to 0-for-30 dating to June 26 at Boston. “I’d like to try to be more positive than that, but you strike out four times and there’s guys on base — it’s really just a bad performance.”
It is absolutely unreal that Goldschmidt is 0 for his last 30.
It is unreal that they are striking out THIS much.
It is unreal that Cabby decided, STRATEGICALLY, to put his bat down on a 3-2 pitch that was a strike over the plate.
It is unreal that Cody Bellinger got thrown out at first base on a fucking SINGLE (he wasn’t trying to stretch it into a double, he just took too big of a turn at first FOR NO REASON).
It is less unreal that Will Warren choked again, as yet another Yankee starter threw home run derby for the opposing team. Injuries and the W boys pitching like shit have made this rotation quickly turn from world-beaters to just plain BAD.

Rice is starting to come to. As we have seen, this offense really only needs two guys to get hot at the same time. Recently, they had NO one hot. Now they might have Rice. They just need one of Grisham, Goldy, and Belli to join Rice, and the offense should be fine. They DID get a lot of hits in this one. They just, you know, struck out seventeen fucking times.

It’s so gross. People can just say Volpe sucks without making up shit about the dude. He certainly doesn’t seem like he has a weird ego about him. He just isn’t that good.
Agree completely. He seems like the most eager, cooperative, stand-up kind of guy imaginable. If only he didn’t suck.
Volpe at catcher briefly sounded like an upgrade, just because Wells’s offense has been so bad, but then I realized that even if he could receive and frame, Volpe still wouldn’t be able to throw anyone out and the offense would still be subpar. So it would just be rearranging the deck chairs on the chicken parm.
I’m confident in our approach.
