- HOUSTON — Great players often do great things, so it was no surprise to see Juan Soto emphatically stamp his first Opening Day as a member of the Yankees. That the moment would be powered by his arm, not the game’s most potent left-handed stroke, was a twist even his teammates couldn’t have seen coming.
Soto charged Kyle Tucker’s ninth-inning single to right field and delivered a strong one-hop throw to home plate, cutting down Mauricio Dubón’s attempt to score the potential tying run as the Yankees held on for a season-opening 5-4 victory over the Astros on Thursday afternoon at Minute Maid Park.
The Yankees have already won more games in 2024 than I expected, so yay!
SG is in the house.
So cool. Welcome back, SG! It would be good to see you around with some frequency.
My gracious. New site, Yankee win, SG sighting. Almost enough to make me reconsider dumping the Yankees.
my doppelganger. hello
We Are UJD
Great win against the Yankee’s nemesis! Heck of a throw by Soto.
Glad Cortes didn’t give up 8 runs. Maybe he won’t suck to bad this season.
Volpe looking really good. I thought Stanton looked good too despite the results. Better load.
Volpe looked great (although he also looked good to begin last year).
I didn’t notice much about Stanton, he still hasn’t met a low/outside slider he won’t wave at though.
Yanks a slight ‘dog again today.

rodon day, awoooo
I think I’ve found the signal. pitchers surnamed webb have good two seamers / sinkers
Man, watching the replays – I really don’t think that tag was made. Ball hits glove hits dirt – and never gets the runner.
Definitely not enough to overturn.
But in terms of reality, and not the letter of the law – they stole that game.
(Of course, any normal team with that offensive output would have scored twice as many runs.)
Negatives Cortes
Positives Volpe, Cortes
You will all see the Nasty.
Also, Hader looked juuuust a touch better than Holmes.
Positives Lo, Hamilton.
Brian, this structure is already looking good – really nice job!
Only issue I see is getting more than 2 levels in the comments.
Agree, I would like to see comment threads go deeper, but it sounds like there might be some technical limitations there?
Yeah, threads more than two levels break the site on mobile.
Today’s game is on Apple TV
Major League Baseball.
“Because money now trumps having an actual fan base.”
Will Warren lasted 1/3 inning today at Scranton 5r 3h 3bb. Greg Allen with a home run, Pereira 0/3.
Hampton apparently had a prp injection for his ucl. hope he recovers better than Tanaka did.
Pereira goes deep.
nice. Perfect time to trade him
How fitting two Yankee minor leaguers Vivas and Oscar Gonzales recovering from orbital socket fractures. They’ll fit right in.
Yankee PR The New York Yankees today announced that they have acquired right-handed pitcher JT Brubaker and international signing bonus money from the Pittsburgh Pirates in exchange for a player to be named later.
RAB Interesting! Brubaker started Opening Day for the Pirates in 2022. Power sinker guy, which the Yankees love and have had success coaching up. The Pitt > NY pipeline continues.
Brubaker is also recovering from TJ, and is unlikely to be available until the summer.
At least they’ll have maneuvering room the next time they don’t sign the big intl free agent. (Yes, I know he wanted to go to CA, but then they should have overcome that with a significantly higher bid. Or they could not do anything unreasonable – and sign no major players. Okay, except for a one-year contract.)
I guess it really turns on who the player to be named later is, right?
