Early in his big league career, George Lombard Jr. has provided glimpses that illustrate why the Yankees are banking on him as their shortstop of the future. Now he has etched his name alongside one of the greats of the franchise’s storied past.
Lombard became the youngest Yankee to hit a grand slam since Mickey Mantle, clearing the right-field fence with a third-inning blast that helped power a 6-1 victory over the Rockies at Yankee Stadium.

“It’s pretty cool,” Lombard said. “It’s definitely a little different from the first home run. A grand slam is cool. It was a big swing to put us in front and give us a good lead so we could win today.”
The Yankees had not hit a grand slam all season until Lombard connected with Tomoyuki Sugano’s 86.6 mph slider, launching an opposite-field drive that cleared the right-field wall for a Statcast-projected 353-foot blast.
I really wanted to give Lombard the featured image, but Warren was so good that I have to give it to Warren celebrating the big first and third and one out double play.
But it was SUCH a big grand slam that I’ll put that image here, too…
Great win. The bullpen now suddenly looks kind of NORMAL, right? Schreiber is a normal reliever, and Clarke Schmidt is clearly going to be here soon, and he’s AWESOME as a reliever. Blackburn has been good (outside that choke job against San Diego, but that was the only run he has allowed since JULY), and Headrick has been good. Fulmer isn’t terrible, so the bullpen really looks kind of actually decent now. Good for them.
The offense needs to do better, though, of course. Sugano dominated them much of the game.
Judge will likely take tonight’s game off. Anthony Volpe is back, which is hilarious. Maybe he can play well at second.

Remember there was a poster here with the handle NJDHAS(XX) which were the initials of the homegrown Yankees infield of the future? I don’t remember who they thought would be at 3B. Maybe they’re still here under a different name. Anyway I was thinking next year the Yankees could start an all-homegrown lineup:
SP: Warren, Schmidt, Schlittler
1B: Rice
2B: Volpe
SS: Lombard
3B: Cabrera
LF: Dominguez
CF: Jones
RF: Judge
C: Wells
DH: some guy
Yeah, the other two letters were DJ. All together it was Nick Johnson (1B), Alfonso Soriano (2B), Derek Jeter (SS), Drew Henson (3B).
And yeah, that’s a fun exercise, especially the part where Dominguez plays the field. While we’re at it, bring up Luis Durango from AA, and see how he handles MLB pitching, and maybe he can play LF so Jasson can DH?
And don’t forget Gil on the mound…
it likely wouldn’t be the BEST possible lineup depending what they do over the winter, but it’s a credible homegrown one, and when was the last tome the Yankees could say that
rays were down 3-0 in the ninth, now 3-1 with a runner on

Lombard can not be the next Mantle because clearly Volpe is. Mantle got sent down to KC, got discouraged, his dad kicked his butt, Mantle was great. Volpe got sent to Scranton, got discouraged, ate some Chicken Parm, is coming back as Barry Bonds.

How in the FUCK is Martian batting third in this stupid fucking lineup?
The Rays lost today, so Boone may feel he’s playing with house money, instead of feeling like he has to take the opportunity to gain a game. And if the standings don’t otherwise move, it would still take a 4-game sweep of the Rays to move past them, so it’s not entirely unfounded. But I think, as I suspect you do too, that the standings could easily move. Tampa also has series against Boston and Philly, who could give them trouble. So really Boone shouldn’t bat Dominguez third against the Rockies. Really it should be Volpe, who has been destroying AAA pitching.
