If there is a silver lining to the scuffles that have most of the Yankees’ lineup grinding bat handles into sawdust, it’s that they are becoming intimately familiar with the pressure of playing in low-scoring games – exactly the kinds of conditions under which championship teams must shine.
That was Max Fried’s take after watching his Yankees get off the mat late Friday evening at Yankee Stadium, down to their final outs after another punchless display. They flipped the script just in time, riding big hits from Austin Wells and Ben Rice into extra innings before walking off the Braves for a 3-2, 10-inning victory.
“That’s baseball, especially when you come down to the end of the year into playoff baseball,” Fried said. “It’s important to be able to play these tight games and be comfortable playing in tight games. We embrace it.”
Ryan McMahon lifted the game-winning sacrifice fly with the bases loaded in the 10th. It marked just the Yankees’ second win in 10 extra-inning games this season, coming at the expense of a hot Atlanta club, which had won eight consecutive games as it checked into the Bronx.
What a win!
The Yankees are still pathetic at offense, and they’ll be DESTROYED by Chris Sale on Saturday, but fuck, man, this was still a great win.
I figured I’d go with Luis Garcia Jr’s amazing over-the-shoulder catch on Ronald Acuna’s bloop in the 10th inning as the featured image, but there were plenty of other options for good featured images.

That was one incredible play by Lombard, I have to admit.
And give them credit for scoring in extras without abandoning their principles (a sac fly not being a hit with RISP).

Turned it off after the 8th. Nice win, but hard to say they really battled for it. No runs, 3 hits, 9 Ks against Mahle. A fortunate bad outing by a good closer, then 2 walks, no hits, and a sac fly to win it.
And Lombard’s hit inthe 9th that started it all was a swinging bunt. But Rosario, Wells, and Rice had big ABs in the 9th.

A smart human will use the information from ABS to evaluate subsequent pitches. So a pitcher should know how to adjust what they just threw; and a hitter or an umpire should know that if the next pitch is practically identical then the result will be practically identical.

Bob Watson is like the forgotten guy from 96.
I just don’t think Volpe is as petty and vindictive as a Barry Bonds, or a Lance Armstrong, or a Michael Jordan. He’s made some remarks before this season about proving himself and said he’s always had a chip on his shoulder; but I can’t recall ever seeing any actual evidence of it, and frankly I wish the surgeons had implanted one when they were in there repairing his torn labrum.
I imagine he’s rooting for Lombard to help win him a ring, knowing he may not get another chance in his career. And I imagine he’s focusing on 2B so he can inherit that job when the Yankees cheap out on FA’s this winter.
Really, the only way I could see Volpe rooting against Lombard would be if Lombard stole his girl. And I would hope that Lombard could avoid that kind of nonsense.
Hoch Spencer Jones said that, in the cafeteria after Saturday’s game, George Lombard Jr. was already quizzing teammates about Grant Holmes — Atlanta’s starter for Sunday afternoon.
“He’s super mature for his age. He loves baseball,” Jones said. “We were eating just now and he’s talking about the pitcher for tomorrow. It just kind of shows you where his head is at.”
