In the hours leading up to his much-anticipated MLB debut, George Lombard Jr. did not show any nerves. In fact, the 21-year-old went so far as to say he was relaxed.
Judging by his performance, it is hard not to believe him.
The Yankees’ top-ranked prospect dazzled with his glove at shortstop and launched a towering home run in his second career at-bat, bringing a raucous crowd of 41,081 inside Yankee Stadium to its feet. Lombard finished his evening 1-for-2 with a walk, jolting the Yankees to a crisp 2-0 victory over the Cardinals on Tuesday night.
Well, that was certainly a memorable debut for George Lombard Jr.! You can see why he was “untouchable” as a prospect. His defense was amazing, and his offense was good, too (if he keeps this up, he’ll be leading off VERY soon).
However, at the end of the day, it was still yet another game that the Yankees won scoring just two runs by having an outstanding pitching performance from a starter and using Headrick/Bednar as crutches to get by. You just simply cannot keep winning games with just two runs scored. It’s insanity.
Heliot Ramos presumably can hit lefties, but he looks like every other shitty Yankee against righties. Ben Rice is fucking LOST at the plate (he’s barely over .900 OPS now). I do love Luis Garcia, however. He’s appointment viewing when he comes up to the plate. He can’t pimp an out, though. He has to get used to the dimensions of the Stadium so that he doesn’t pimp a flyout again. That was lame.
Anyhow, great win, and I assume Lombard will continue to have an OPS over 2.000 going forward. He is the featured image, as he celebrates his first big league home run (Weathers probably deserved the header image, but, I mean, come on!).

So the three best teams in the AL are in the east. One gets knocked out in round 1 and the other in around 2, leaving one to play the 4th, 5th or 6th best for the ALCS. Thats stupid.

Yesterday you have to add a whole slew of really, really good defensive plays. Which is not always the case.
If your defense is good, that improves the odds of your pitchers looking good.
Their defense was OUTSTANDING in July. They’ve slowly tightened their shit up as the season has progressed.

So far he’s had one hit in the majors. I think it’s a bit early to use that phrase. He’s got virtually nothing to keep up yet.

He certainly looks the part. I think a lot of people fell in love with Volpe’s 2021 season in high A and A and figured if he could do that once, he could do it again. It seems like that was a very anomalous season for him, though since his other minor league numbers match up pretty well his ML stats. They gave him a lot of runway to adjust and improve.
Lombard, on the other hand, has improved at every level despite being promoted aggressively. He shows plenty of patience and has an elite handle on the strike zone. The defense definitely passed the initial eye test.
I hope that he can provide some stability to the position going forward.

Yeah, if they hadn’t gotten out of it there, that would have been quite the costly fuckup by Lombard that would have definitely tainted his debut. So thank goodness that Boone had all of his toys available to him.

That HAS to be good news. Upper body resistance is very much the sort of shit you CAN’T do if you have a truly fucked up upper body injury.
That it is not FULL activity still means he’s probably not back until mid-September, but hell, at least it sounds like he WILL be back this season.
