  1. Looking at the standings I’m getting really annoyed. If the season ends today the 2nd best team in the AL plays the 3rd best team for the right to play the best team in the ALDS. While #5 plays #6 for the right to play #4.
    This system is too stupid to be believed.

    The only good part is it means Boston won’t play Tampa in the ALCS.

I generally intensely dislike national announcers, but last night one of them (who was it?) was talking really intelligently about Jones’ stance and position, arguing that he’s do far better standing a bit farther from the strike zone, and – particularly impressively – saying: he hit it oppo – it was low and in the middle right? And indeed it was.
    I thought the argument was really convincing. Wonder what you guys think, and whether there’s any chance it filters back to them.
    Nah.

  10. grisham has been hitting but he’s so painful to have on the team. besides the shitty defense, he is not fast. he is approaching giancarlo levels of speed. it’s like in his mind he still thinks he’s a fleet cf’er but, cmon dude, it was years ago.

    like, i’m not going to hit the skate park just because i could ollie 30 years ago. wtf

    1. You think he should have stayed at first? He had second easily. He just slightly kicked off of the base when he slid into it and instant replay is moronic.

    2. it was closer than it should have been because he isn’t fast and can’t slide. when you’re bum, maybe take that into consideration and stop giving away outs?

    3. That was a totally normal slide. The Dominguez slide, for instance, WAS idiotic. This was a normal slide where he got screwed by his foot kicking up a teensy bit when he hit the bag and baseball’s instant replay rule is idiotic. Guys get called out all of the time nowadays for nonsense like this on totally normal slides where they are briefly off the bag (more often on steals, but also on doubles). It’s just bad luck driven by baseball’s dumb application of instant replay to plays where they were never intended to apply.

      Someone had a great suggestion that, if they’re going to use replay on these slides now, give runners the same “slide through” exception that you give runners on first with “run throughs.” If the guy truly over slides the base (like Dominguez), then sure, fuck ’em, but brief loss of contact with the bag on a slide being cause for an out is absurd. They played things one way for 100 years, and now it’s a completely different game there and that’s without that even being their intent! It’s totally against the spirit of the rule.

  26. Girardi just had the dumbest idea for how he would seed teams.

    He thinks that Wild Card teams should be seeded over division winners if the WIld Card team has a better record in the division of the division winner (so if the Yankees have a better record than the rest of the AL Central than the White Sox, they would be seeded ahead of them).

    I get his concept, but that is waaay too complicated.

      Jazz versus Munoz wasn’t even fair. It was like a Big Leaguer facing a Little Leaguer.

    1. Early in the season, people theorized whether that would be a smart thing for catchers to do to try to trick the other team into challenging, but in this case, HIS team has to challenge each time, so I think he’s likely just a shitty framer.

      jazz is at 93 at 28yo with a career of 106

  46. Has anyone heard of the latest Red Sox cheating allegation? Hacking into the opponents radio feed to know what pitch is coming? Maybe just a conspiracy theory but when a team 14 games under 500 suddenly wins 27 of 30 games people will talk. It’s not like this is the first time they’ve been accused…

    1. I wouldn’t be surprised at MIT kids hacking anything for shits and giggles, let alone the money that a MLB team can offer.

      I also wouldn’t be surprised if someday we find out that someone in the Boston biomedical scene (likely MIT or Harvard hospitals) got David Ortiz some gene therapy to enhance steroid biosynthesis.

    2. Thinking about it practically, it would probably have been easier to have the gene therapy treatment just drive HGH expression instead of one or more enzymes in steroid biosynthesis, which would require targeting a particular tissue. As a secreted hormone, HGH could be synthesized anywhere.
