    and vs lhp sanchez has been fine, not sure if rogers would be a real upgrade.

    rice is ice cold (but so has goldie)
    trent has been really bad (jones not great lately)

    garcia should be up and those guys down at least

  2. Despite stinking horribly for most of the season, Wells has been good the last few weeks. I don’t know how much I trust it, but I might move him up to 6th or even 5th, and slide everyone else down in the order.

    Re: Garcia batting cleanup, Brian, you’re right that he’s this team’s most potent offensive player who’s not on the IL, and he should bat 2nd or 3rd.

    Re: Lombard (from previous thread), Bop, you’re right that he is the only one in this lineup that has the on-base skills to lead off; but I don’t want to put the weight of the world on the shoulders of a guy who just came up. Even if Lombard seems composed, I don’t think the marginal benefit outweighs the marginal long-term risk. I’d approach it like the Yankees did with Jeter – he batted at the bottom of the order for most of his first season and didn’t lead off till like August.

    For now, I might have Rice lead off, even as he’s stunk up the joint for a while. Definitely wouldn’t have Grisham leading off.

    1. Might orient Rice more towards contact and away from power, and maybe that’s how you get out of a slump?

  3. Wells’ 61 OPS+ is, of course, very bad, but it’s at least, well, you know, not INSANELY bad.

    Grisham at 97 OPS+, the closest to 100 of the Dregs (him, Jazz, and McMahon). Jones at 91.

    Rice at 145 and falling fast.

    1. Rice is the one I had real hope for. He was SO good, and it wasn’t just for a month. I kept thinking just don’t let this be the thing to crash.

    1. I remembered it. I liked the move at the time, as he seemed like a Matt Blake special. I recall noting that that was precisely what they SHOULD be doing, just picking up interesting live arms and seeing if Blake can do something with them (as that’s the time you can try it out and then cut them if it doesn’t work out). Clearly, whatever Blake does tends to be one of those things where it either works or it doesn’t, and rather than trading for a guy and finding out that it doesn’t work, just pick dudes up on waivers. If a waiver claim flops, it hurts a lot less than when a Caleb Ferguson or a Jake Bird or a Camilo Doval flops.

      I was hoping Headrick would get more burn last season. But I think he noted recently that he had a hard time adjusting to pitching on short rest last season, and now he’s used to it.

  59. About Grisham.
    It really looks to me not like he’s a bad centerfielder, but rather like he’s an excellent centerfielder who can’t run. Literally, physically can’t run. It’s not that he’s not running fast, it’s that he’s kind of loping because he physically can’t actually run. And a good part of the time he gets away with it because of good reads and positioning. But far from always.
    I can’t be the only one who sees this, can I?

    1. he’s definitely smooth. I’m not sure about his reads – how quickly he translates image, sound, etc into action – largely because they don’t cue that up much programmatically. The best proxy, I think, is if he’s consistently mid-stride by the time the camera gets to him. It also can’t help to have Bellinger cannibalize many balls he might’ve gotten in cavernous LF or the very small RF area. In other words, I think circumstantially he’s better than his numbers.

    2. I can agree with all of that, sure, but I’m not sure it’s quite what I mean.
      What I mean is – are we LOOKING AT HIM RUNNING?
      He’s literally NOT RUNNING. He’s kind of lazily loping. He NEVER looks like he’s really on his horse and running at full speed. He looks like he’s jogging because he can’t run.

    3. Interesting. He does look slow as shit out there. I can’t think of any rationale other than: 1) load management like jogging to 1st on routine plays, 2) his body is kinda crappy at this point, 3) he gets bad reads

    4. Grisham should be a DH/PH at this point. Jones should be in CF every day. RF can be Ramos till Judge is back; LF can be… uh… Caballero or Rosario till Bellinger is back.

      It’s really too bad that Dominguez still can’t play the outfield. Sounds like they’re working on it at AAA…
