Boy, depressing times for the Yankees, huh? It’d be nice if Will Warren didn’t suck tonight.
Volpe over Cabby, and Cabby over Jones. Ugh.
Escarra is back up as Wells is IL’d.
What’s the round trip fare to Scranton?
That’s funny. Like the old commercial why trade a headache for an upset stomach?
Huh, it is possible that Wells has been dealing with this all season long.
Wells diagnosed with cervicogenic headaches. The C-spine is never good news.
Yeah, reminds me of Mattingly and Alfonso. Once the back is involved, it’s always a glaring sign.
Wells’s diagnosis is pretty different from Mattingly’s. Cervicogenic headaches originate in the upper C-spine – C1 to C3 – which are up in the neck, higher than the back. Could be post-concussive, or could be related to some sort of stenosis (and you *really* don’t want stenosis of your C-spine, because C3-C5 give rise to the phrenic nerve which innervates the diaphragm and literally allows you to breathe.)
Mattingly had degenerative lumbar disc, ie a lower back issue with different mechanical origins and consequences.
But yes, the axial skeleton – skull, neck, and torso – is not a preferred place to injure.
Thanks for the insight! Well, then, fuck, that definitely does not sound ideal. 🙂
Looks like a start time past 9.
They called it. Rescheduled for a split doubleheader on August 29th.
That could really help, as Judge MIGHT be back by then!
And we might be in contention.
Why do the Yankees always mess around with injuries?
There are a few I put on them, but I think most of them are on the players and/or just bad luck.
You’ve got the following:
1. Rizzo. Passed concussion tests, so why would they think he had a concussion? They finally sent him to a specialist, and he revealed he DID have a concussion that all of the other concussion tests were missing. It wasn’t like they weren’t giving the guy concussion tests.
2. Judge’s current injury – He didn’t tell them about it! He mentioned casually to the trainers he was dealing with some recurring pain, but nothing serious, because players are idiots and don’t want to reveal that they are hurt. You can’t just give a guy an MRI for the hell of it.
3. Wells’ current injury – Again, didn’t tell anyone. He was just being an idiot.
4. Volpe’s shoulder – Again, didn’t tell anyone. He was just being an idiot.
The Yankees can’t just order tests on any hitter who is sucking. Sometimes guys suck!
What IS on them, though, is not doing re-imaging on Sevy back in the day, not doing re-imaging before bringing Teix back (and therefore not seeing that his bone bruise had become a fracture) and maybe some other instances of not properly doing re-imaging.
I don’t know, Brian. There’s a level – and a level of readable consistency – of sucking that should be more than enough to get you all kinds of testing. With Judge – it really wasn’t that long, we were only STARTING to guess that something’s wrong, so they’re really right there with us, hard to be too down on them for that. With other players, we KNEW it, and long before they did, which is just ridiculous.
Actually, it’s odd that we didn’t think that about Wells, I guess it’s because he’s so new and really doesn’t have a sufficiently established record to veer down from.
Fascinatingly, the Yankees are going to skip Warren, and pitch Schlittler tomorrow.
I would have thought that they would have wanted to give Schlittler more time to rest with his fastball struggling the last few starts.
Yeah, I don’t get that move at all.
Either Schlittler is insisting on getting the ball, or Boone is feeling desperate for a (series) win.
If I remember Schlittler talking about his last couple times out, he said he’s been overthinking his mechanics and mentally not right. He would probably argue, then, that a game against Boston will fire him up such that he doesn’t overthink things. He’ll probably adamantly deny that he’s hurt, because that’s the culture of this team.
I suspect we all worry that his mechanics aren’t right because he’s injured, and he’s overthinking because he can’t get his mechanics right, and he’ll overcompensate somehow – especially if he tries to throw harder against Boston – and he’ll get injured worse.
At least starting him sooner will reveal whether he’s seriously hurt or not…
Right. If he gets TJS this month there’s a chance he could be back for the 2027 playoffs.
Schlittler’s another case. There’s clearly SOMETHING wrong.
Early in their careers, sometimes pitchers get a dead arm period, then it passes.
But I agree with all of you – when something’s wrong is SO not the time to double down and push him harder.
And Brian, with a sudden drop in velocity (and results) over at least 4 starts, would you NOT have him looked at medically? If I were in their shoes, I’d already feel guilty for being so laggard about it.
Hoch Max Fried (left elbow bone bruise) is increasing his throwing to 120 feet this week. He will undergo imaging to determine if he’s ready to get back on the mound.
He’s also been taking some reps behind the plate. He hit 448 his senior year in high school and 273 in 2021 for the Braves so he thinks he could help the offense.
Don’t know whether to laugh or cry.
Rosario is totally what I think of in a cleanup hitter.
Cam sitting 99 first inning.
Yankee first 3 going down meekly.
Congratulations to Ranger Smith on his perfect game.
