Congratulations to Trey Gibson for being the first pitcher in Major League history to have a Perfect Game in his Major League debut (oddly enough, NOT the first pitcher to have a no-hitter in his first Major League game).
With Stanton out I was really expecting to see Judge get some games at DH. The big fella isn’t a kid anymore. If the Martian can’t lock down an outfield spot I have little hope he’s worth investing in.
Good point.
Jake Bird last 28 days opposing batters hitting 379/441/629-1062. But I totally trust him.
That got out in a hurry. Forget Minute Rice, that was Second Rice.
That was NUTS.
I think I’d call that a single and an error allowing Judge to reach second.
Giving up a steal on a pick off is so bad. And it leads directly to a run.
Ward is making Dominguez look good in left.
What a catch by Judge! Not Fried’s sharpest outing.
I mean, Ward made a pretty slick catch in the first, right?
And Fried looked pretty good striking out 3 consecutive batters in the second…
Fried is so good that even when he doesn’t have it, he can still get outs. Its probably the thing I like most about the guy.
Someone one of them should have known to just stop. That could have been caught if not for the fear of a collision. There must be a way to prepare for that kind of thing.
No way to prepare to field THAT!
Are the Rays just never going to lose another game? They’re not even that good!!!
Bizarre. But I felt a bit like that about the Jays last year, and they were better than I thought.
The Jays were playing over their heads. The Rays barely have a positive run differential!!
If I remember, I dismissed the Jays last year about this time, too (maybe a little later in the season) because their run differential was almost negative.
Oh, come on.
Bird just tearing the cover off the ball in the fourth.
Hopefully Rice didn’t break anything. This is very concerning that he jammed his finger hard enough that they had to pull him from the game.
Is Rice hurt?
Yep.
From Chris Kirschner:
I guess I can’t be TOO worried about that.
Ugh, you know they’re stranding them. Judge should have scored on that double. Just, like, an INCH from a homer. Ugh.
I’m not even that disappointed, because, again, I KNEW that they were stranding those runners.
How did Jazz not make it closer on the bobble?
McMahon makes way too many awful throws like that for a guy who is legitimately a very good fielder.
Not a good game by Fried, 94 pitches through 5-innings, then McMahon with an error to start the sixth.
Ugh, he beat it out. Umpires suck for calling it out. How many THOUSANDS of double plays have umpires blown over the years for just being CLOSE at first?
It was ABSURD that he walked fucking TAVARES.
Topa tried to blow a 3-run lead for the Twins, as the Jays had two in and two on, but a DP ended the game, Twins win 4-3.
Maybe Jasson can do something positive? That would be nice. And how long do you keep running McMahon, 179/555, out there?
He did!
Jasson with a leadoff double, and scores courtesy of two ground outs.
See? The contact play ALWAYS works.
phenom 0/4, 241/565 AA. There goes his trade value. Spence two home runs, both off Berrios. He’s been on a little roll.
That has been Grisham’s season in a nutshell so far. Sees a lot of pitches, makes good contact, gets nothing to show for it.
I’d have done Headrick in the 7th, Hill in the 8th, but I don’t HATE Cruz here.
Cruz doing Cruz stuff.
He gets the big double play, so things are going well, so Boone decides, “Well, I could go to Headrick, who is a better pitcher, or I could keep trying to push my luck with Cruz?” We all know which way Boone will go.
I legit don’t get how Cruz can’t even come CLOSE on these pitches.
Now Headrick can’t give up a single hit or the save is blown. Just nonsense managing.
Boonesense
Really Boone to a tee.
2-0 in a bad spot
The difference in quality between Headrick and the other relievers on his “tier” in the trust circle is HUGE.
I am on a trip with my wife, and my brothers and sisters-in-law, and I just had to explain why “Leading AAA in RBIs is meaningless.”
Right now, it’s:
Bednar
Hill
Headrick
HUGE GAP
Cruz
GAP
Blackburn
Yarbrough
GAP
Doval
GAP
Bird
Goldy gave it a bit of a ride.
Why does Judge NEVER challenge pitches?!
Good question.
What does Yovanny Cruz need to do to get on to the active roster?! He’s not on the 40-man, but the Yankees currently have an opening on the 40-man (I think they might have TWO open slots).
Garcia was DFAed by the Yankees, too, Kay, so you shouldn’t give the Mets shit over DFAing him.
Rays win in 10.
Of course they do. They’re the shittiest team to win every fucking game.
Rocky Marciano
Mars (finally) Attacks!
The Brockton Brawler with a TKO
I guess Jason reads RLYW. 😎
Does Bednar come in for the ninth? Been on ice for awhile?
How awesome would it be if this turned out to be Dominguez actually, finally waking up?
Rocky up to 278/872 and has looked good from the right side after hitting 375 over ~15 ABs in the minors. First Joe Louis, then Archie Moore, now Baltimore pitching.
Bednar can’t even go one two three with an eight run lead.
Brian’s complaining leading the way!
True leadership right there.
Does Dominguez have a weird, unorthodox swing? BA “ While some observers may find his high-effort, big-movement style unique compared to more compact swings, it is generally viewed by talent evaluators as an “A-swing” that works for his body type.”
Yanks playing well. Are they good enough to be Boone-proof? What’s the magic number?
Enjoy it now, all I can say.
Fun stuff.
Will Volpe be able to hit AAA pitching?
The first cut is the deepest.
Following today’s game, the Yankees returned INF Anthony Volpe from his rehab assignment, reinstated him from the 10-day injured list and optioned him to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
I mean, that’s such a logical thing to do that I can’t believe the Yankees actually did it.
Shocking. They finally see him for the player he is?
I think Cabby has just played too well. Volpe is pointless as a bench player.
I wonder how this is gonna work out with Volpe and Lombard both at AAA. Will Lombard see the big leagues before Volpe gets another shot?
I imagine the plan is that Lombard doesn’t come up no matter what until next year (unless there are a bunch of shocking injuries) when he replaces Jazz at second base.
