The Yankees finally hit the “ten games over .500” mark last night, a marker I tend to look for in a team to hit as early as possible in a season to show that things are moving in the right direction, and they will turn to a rookie making his Major League debut to keep them at least 10 games over, as Elmer Rodriguez takes the mound for the Yankees today, as part of their surprisingly bold decision-making this season. They typically play things a lot more conservatively than this, but this is a bold move.
Randal Grichuk was the player who couldn’t find a chair when the music stopped, and he has been DFAed. He just didn’t have a lane on this team once it was clear that Ben Rice was never going to become the backup catcher when Anthony Volpe returned (which I think was definitely the plan to start the season, or else signing Grichuk never made any sense to begin with), and so Escarra needed to remain on the roster (with that in mind, the Yankees really should be looking to pick up a righthanded hitting catcher to replace Escarra).
Rosario and Caballero have done well enough that Cabby could easily just play left field against lefties when Volpe returns, and Goldschmidt is obviously still the main pinch-hitting option against lefties on the bench (and Rosario is probably ahead of Grichuk, too). There just wasn’t a true need for Grichuk anymore. I assume he’ll catch on somewhere else, though, and hopefully he does well enough to keep him employed, but not well enough to make us miss him (and I really don’t want him killing the Yankees again like he has historically). Shit…Toronto could probably use him now, couldn’t they? Drat.
Old friend Nathan Eovaldi has generally pitched REALLY well against the Yankees. Let’s hope that that doesn’t continue today.
Boone not that committed to phenom

I’m not going to knock the guy too much for the nerves I’m sure he’s dealing with in his debut, but boy, you can’t throw so many pitches, dude. And you DEFINITELY can’t WASTE so many pitches. Going to three balls on the first three batters, with two walks (including 0-2 to a walk on Seager).
But he got out of it without allowing a run, so I can’t complain too much.
I saw a dude mocking the Yankees for the fact that Dominguez wasn’t a Major League player, but somehow he’s good enough to bat 6th, and it’s just so fucking stupid, as all three of the guys who play the same position as Dominguez were batting AHEAD of him.
Weird error by Eovaldi.
Cone just said that he thinks that Grichuk being DFAed means that Dominguez is up to stay. I don’t believe that to be case at ALL.
I legit don’t even know how he came to that conclusion.
I assume somebody in the org said it to him
I dunno, because Kay disputed it right away, as well.
Once Volpe comes up, and Stanton comes off of the IL, there CLEARLY isn’t a spot for Dominguez.
The bench would be:
Escarra
Caballero/Volpe
Rosario
Goldschmidt
Where is Dominguez playing there?
Osuna must have felt that hit his foot.
He didn’t react, though. Such an odd challenge.
REALLY weird challenge by Texas. Batter was 2-0. Why would you challenge a super close HBP like that?
I feel like a curveball would be a nice thing for Rodriguez
maybe Elmer isn’t ready
Maybe Elmer is ready
Nerves are a big deal. I think he’ll only get better with his control.
ERC didn’t throw enough strikes in the WBC Per CBS
Cole 5.2ip 3r 3h 3k
He’s going to pitch a LOT of rehab starts, so I think it’s really just all about building up his arm strength.
No idea how Judge took that pitch.
Jazz all like, fuck all y’all for not working the count
Eo is a good pitcher, so I’m not too irked at this Yankee performance…but, okay, I’m irked at this Yankee performance.
I hope that was just the funny bone.
He’s still in there, so hopefully it was just that (Dominguez got hit in the back elbow).
Man, McMahon can sure pick it.
Elmer has looked better as he has gone along.
no such thing as a bad one year deal 🙄
They took Jasson out after the HBP.
Huh. Grisham’s bat speed is down 1.65 mph YoY. Bat speed YoY deltas of 2 mph or more have been predictive so far this year.
Yankees already have one foot back in the Bronx.
Despite having a bad year EVO kills us.
When do they give up on Jake Bird,7 era this season, 27 Yankee era last season.
I’d be interesting in seeing Yovanny Cruz given a chance.
I suspect things are a bit in flux with Rodon and Cole returning.
At least Rice showed up.
The only guy to show up, sadly.
The Rays lost.
Can’t complain too much then about this one.
If Dominguez is seriously hurt, they could just rescind the Grichuk DFA, right?
Why is this stadium so fucking BIG? It’s really weird.
X-ray on Dominguez’s elbow are inconclusive. THAT”S pretty fucking weird, too.
I am pretty sure they ARE allowed to rescind their DFA of Grichuk, right?
He had to be off the 40 man for today’s game.
Pardon the old joke:
Sometimes a study isn’t diagnostic, and in those cases, the radiologists are happy to say so (professionally obligated, yes, but also more pleased than the ordering physician ever is to hear it). Sometimes you don’t see the fracture itself right away, but you might see a degree of swelling that suggests a fracture is possible. In that case the radiologist will typically recommend another modality – decades ago it would be a “bone scan” with a radioisotope (Technetium 99), but these days they tend to recommend cross-sectional imaging like CT or MRI, since those can inform other diagnoses beyond fracture.
It’s definitely a worrisome situation, though, right? That they don’t know if he avoided a break.
Right, but since they have seven days of DFA limbo, can’t they just add him back on if they want him? They have three empty 40 man spots once he came off of the 40-man.
Worrisome? … I typically worry more about colleagues* who inappropriately project certainty. Better to take the time to get it right, than to rush to a conclusion that ends up not being right and to have mismanaged in the interim, with potential for harm. In JD’s case they should get the answer soon enough; they’ll scan him no later than the morning. And the radiologist will surely give a caveat-riddled report on that scan too, almost certainly utilizing the phrase “Recommend clinical correlation.” =)
* I’m neither a radiologist nor an orthopedist, but I have their phone extensions memorized.
Could they be considering trading phenom? The problem is if they do he’ll get really good.
If you love him, set him free. Preferably outside your division.
what would they get for him, a minor league arm?
Volpe subtracts value, you’d get a MLB reliever for just the chicken parm recipe.

It is really funny how Murakami really got fucked over by that 95 MPH stat. I’ll admit that that soured me on him, too. But I guess he just needed to see MORE of them.
