I just don’t get why they rushed volpe back when he could use additional seasoning – or even just not to mess with what was working. I’ll die on that hill, and it makes sense that jose’s offense suffers because he has been asked to play so many more positions.

    1. Max was seeing a decent amount of pitches but he can’t bat leadoff anymore since pitchers don’t have that much trouble simply challenging him and the at bats seem to be getting quicker.

    2. I actively LIKE Schuemann, but as a utility guy who won’t kill you if you play him at second or short (or coming in to pinch-run and then play the outfield or coming in to play the outfield after you pinch hit someone else).

      Batting him leadoff and playing him in the outfield is just so embarrassing, and is likely something else we won’t see again after the trade deadline.

  25. The announcers are being stupid with Chivilli. “The Yankees are forced to use him more than they wanted to.” They are only using Chivilli because they WANT to use him. They have other dudes who could have been up here.

    Cruz has been good this year but the last 15 games he has a 4.5 era with 13 hits, 10 walks, in 14 innings. Over the last 7 games he has a 7.1 era with 14 baserunners in 6.1 innings. In other words he stinks now, We saw that with Holmes and Chapman.

    1. Cabby SHOULD be able to make contact. The pitcher just happened to throw a ball waaaaaaaaaaay out of the zone, and Cabby had no chance. He practically threw his bat at it to try to hit it.

    3. But you call hit and run to stay out of the double play and with Sanchez running there was no chance he’d steal successfully. I’d like to have at least some chance of stealing successfully.

  36. I don’t see how this team does better than a low wild card. This team stinks. The catchers stink. The middle infielders are mediocre. PGold is cooked. Grisham and Jason are fourth outfielders. Spence is TBD. Caballero, phenom, Rosario, and MacMahon all stink. Jazz stinks this year. Five runs in the last 3 games. You can’t expect Headrick, Blackburn, Cruz, Chivilli, Hill and Bednar all to pitch like Mo.

  38. PGold 189 last 15 games, 138 last 7, 380 OPS. Spencer Jones 785 OPS, now second highest OPS, 969 last 15 games. And if Cashman hod signed someone really bad like Slater, Jones would still be at Scranton.

      There is plenty they could do. A catcher and a good right-handed outfielder would significantly move the needle on this team.

      If they add Arraez, as well, the whole complexion of the team changes.

      There is also a ton of leeway between them and the bottom of the Wild Card race. You’d almost prefer to fall to the third Wild Card if you don’t win the division, face off against either the Rangers or the Central winner, then get the other team in the ALDS.

  42. In addition to what Brian said, one more thing the Yankees can do by Monday is addition by subtraction. They already offloaded Doval. Now they could consider the same for Volpe, Goldschmidt, Grisham, Schuemann, maybe even Chisholm, and two of the three catchers (maybe keep Wells to back up the offense-capable catcher they acquire).

  61. Here’s my theory. There is something poisonous in the water in the Yankee home clubhouse that makes players ill. Not ill enough to go to the hospital but enough to weaken them, maybe affect their eyesight, or slow their reaction time. Judge drinks only bottled water so he’s unaffected. Everybody else gets it. It explains everything.

    By the way BC, why are you so sure cashman is going to get anything if value before Tuesday?

  83. I think Cash is just so used to having a team full of DHs that he’s uncomfortable when, due to all the injuries, he doesn’t have more of them than he can actually put at DH.

  84. The more I think about it, the only issue is the fit for the roster.
    On a talent basis, they got what appears to be a really good offensive player for a bunch of people I couldn’t care less about.

    It’s not for his splits, he’s better against righties.
    Please don’t trade anything of value for that.

    1. It happens. I do sometimes think it helps righties. It’s fair. But at the same time, if you really believe that to be the norm, you’d have to specifically choose players badly suited to your ballpark.
      One has to believe, I think, that, on average, players well suited to the park are not at a statistical disadvantage.

  93. Please tell me that a GM who set out to get a relief pitcher and a catcher, plus maybe an outfielder and/or a 2nd/SS/3B, is not going to get a first baseman and nothing else.

    1. Cashman just traded away FOUR relief pitchers, and cleared two 40-man spots in the process (Cruz, Bird, and Doval off, Garcia on). He obviously is not close to being done.
