This team frustrates the shit out of me. And this game will certainly not alleviate the problem, as King is going to DOMINATE them.
Three hard hit balls off Schmidt who looks like Shit.
I think their 22 year old is better than ours.
Oh my god, take the fucking walk, dude!
Wells has been pretty bad since late last season.
Off last summer and this spring I thought he’d be good, even very good. What other young players besides Judge and Cano got good? Sanchez looked like a star for a while. Bird also. Maybe Rice will.
Last 30 games for Wells: 100 AB, BA 200, OBP 245, SLG 400.
Last 30 games of the 2024 season, Austin Wells hit .208 with a .265 OBP and a .465 SLG.
July 941. August 936.
What a mess. Can Schmidt keep the damage down?
Schmidt sure fucked himself that inning. Two runs isn’t awful except when you see HOW they got them.
Blake does a wonderful job with the pitching staff, but it only works if the guy’s smart enough to pay attention, and guys like Schmidt and Warren just don’t have the necessary focus (and Gil regularly struggles with focus, as well).
Schmidt is obviously much better than Warren, and it’s not like he’s having a terrible game, it’s just so frustrating when it’s unforced errors. Walking Gavin fucking Sheets on four pitches to load the bases?! Balking in a run?! You have to work to be this fucking stupid.
Carrasco, for instance, whatever, he is just washed. He had to be perfect at all times to not get rocked. Schmidt and Warren have the stuff to excel if they just keep their head in the game more often than they do.
Could have been worse, but probably all the Padres need.
Sadly true. This is a frontrunning team all the way (and, of course, King was always going to dominate them).
That was a really nice piece of hitting by Judge. If only he hadn’t pressed in his first at-bat.
The “Can Austin Wells get a single?” challenge.
“Shockingly,” he could not.
This ump’s strike zone is ALL over the place. Balls are strikes, strikes are balls, it’s gross.
Life!
Wells and Bellinger, huge disappointments,
It’s still way too early for both guys (and Dominguez).
However, while I won’t call Wells a disappointment just yet, I agree he’s VERY frustrating.
Thank goodness Manny and Merrill won’t have runners to drive in this inning.
Way to make him work, guys!
I assume that’s it for Schmidt?
The entire AL East is somehow all ass at the same time.
I think no way he would get that inning if it weren’t for the bullpen being so tired, but, well, goddamn, that was good! Get this man a win, you dicks!
Maybe the Yankees should’ve hired Brett Boone.
That legit WAS cute when Boone broke the story of his brother signing with the Rangers.
Yankee pen vs SD pen plus King. Ad Padres.
Especially when the typically reliable Tim Hill is struggling.
Hill is pretty good, he’s not lights out. Padres pen is very good and the Yankee hitters with a few exceptions are not.
Cruz was due to fall back to earth.
The Yankees bullpen is quite average I would say.
Maybe not even if Devin is useless.
They really should have just let Hill try to finish the inning. You can’t burn Cruz out.
I, for one, think they should stop coughing up late leads to the Padres. And I don’t care who knows it.
I mean, at the same time, you have to give San Diego credit, they’ve gotten big hits off of the Yankees two best relievers. Cruz was flirting with disaster with Tatis, and he’s honestly lucky that Diaz runs like shit.
One run might as well be thirty.
They really did bring in the lefty to neutralize the Martian. Shit. Oh well, I guess we have to hope Judge can do something in the ninth.
The Martian told me to shut the fuck up.
Okay, the “Can the shitty back of the lineup get a single in three at-bats?” challenge (odds are that they cannot).
Or even, “Can they move the runner to third, then tie the game with a sac fly?” challenge.
Ha!
Come on, Wells, all they need is a fucking sac fly.
Who will PGold hit for or will Boone save him for the 9th?
Flies pig.
Truly shocking. A sac fly wouldn’t have STUNNED me, but a groundball RBI single is truly shocking.
Do you pinch-hit Goldy here?
Oh, Waldo, you fucking loser.
Why do guys like Waldo not know how to bunt?
Waldo is surprisingly lax in the fundamentals, which is weird, as he seems like a guy who should be all about that.
“MLB players who can’t get down a bunt should be hung by their eyelids” is my most Werthers-sucking, pipe-lighting old-man take.
Hopefully not one of Wandy’s classic double plays coming.
At least the bottom of the lineup showed something against one of their better relievers.
Don’t swing 2-0, Grish!
Wandy: Secret Yankee.
I never liked Wandy that much as a Yankee.
I love when the ump gives a borderline pitch to a dude after four straight balls. It never ceases to amaze me.
Goddamn, do I love Ben fucking RIce.
They couldn’t walk Judge intentionally fast enough.
This is weird.
When did we trade Devin Williams to the Padres?
The Yankees are REALLY tight at sending runners this season. How did Peraza not score on Belli’s single?
Take two more strikes, Volpe!
Well, an unexpected, very nice rally. Who pitches the 8th?
The guy they just called up? Or maybe Matzek?
There’s an argument to be made for pitching Cruz, since he’s burned for tomorrow either way.
Too soon to be disappointed. 😉
He’s been disappointing, not yet disappointed.
I knew good things would happen when Boone threw his glasses on the field in anger.
I like runs. This is a good amount of runs. Could be more runs. But it’s a start, runs-wise.
Williams proof?
Did you see any one the million dollar game where Airball was caught twice in an hour making half million dollar bluffs.
We embarrassed Wells, who obviously reads RLYW.
Matzek’s still here? Opponents are hitting 438.
Suuuuuuuuuuuper small sample size, though.
PLUS, they keep only throwing him in blowouts, when his goal is to just throw strikes, ya know?
He looked good that inning, for a change.
I think you make Matzek pitch two tonight, save the new guy for tomorrow.
It’s been almost exactly a DECADE since the Yankees last scored ten runs in a single inning.
One of my rare name that Yankee wins.
So last 8 games will include a 12 run win, whatever tonight ends up (9?), a 3 run win along with 4 1-run losses and a 2-run loss. Pythagorean is great; actual not so great.
Exactly!
well well well
An unexpected win is always nice, and coming from behind twice in one game too.
This kinda feels like the BAL series. Win the pythag lose the series. Is Fried due for a clunker?
i find his 400 era+ completely sustainable, personally.
