Well, Fried turned that around, but Boston is playing as poorly as Kansas City right now.

Fried hasn’t had good stuff for three games in a row now. But boy, he’s a smart pitcher, so he can have success with bad stuff.
Actually, let me take that back. What really happened is that SOME of his stuff was bad, but he had some of his pitches working, so he was smart enough to just go to THOSE pitches over and over, and it helped him avoid trouble after a tough start when he had trouble with his stuff.
15-9 record. If they can play at this pace for the rest of the season that would be pretty good.
As noted above they’ve got a lot of non-hitters. But their pitching has been awesome in stretches.
This is admittedly a somewhat tautological argument to make so early in the season; but the pitching has really been good only against bad-hitting teams. The Giants scored 1 run in 3 games against the Yankees, the Royals 6 runs in 3 games, and the Red Sox have scored 1 run in 2 games so far – they all had a team OPS+ of 88 going into today. The A’s, with OPS+ 94 on the year, scored 7 runs over 3 games off the Yankees; the Mariners, at OPS+ 96, scored 5 runs in 3 games. But against the teams that have above league average OPS+ (and barely so, just ranging 102-104): the Rays scored 15 runs in 3 games, the Marlins 16 runs in 3 games, and the Angels scored 32 runs in 4 games. So against roughly league-average lineups, they’re not impressing.
Maybe the bullpen is more to blame for the worse performances, but the only way around that is for the starters to go 8 innings every day. Which might become more possible with a 6 man rotation after Cole and Rodon are back…

You know, Cash was willing to sign Weaver for $9 million for a single year, but the Mets then gave him two years/$22 million.
Would it perhaps make sense to just pick Weaver up at the trade deadline when most of his 2026 salary would have been paid, so it’s closer to a one-year/$11 million deal?
While they’re at it, why not embrace “run it back” and add in Williams?
