  1. Just keep the game close against the worst starter in the league then match our pen against theirs is a plan. Not a good one, but a plan nevertheless.

  2. Cabby shows everything wrong with Jazz. He gives Jazz a million chances to steal – we keep hoping the Yankee batters will be smart enough to do that. But Jazz, of course, just CAN’T FUCKING GET AN ATTEMPT OFF. Ruins Cabby’s whole at bat.
Cabby’s so in the game, I want the players to learn to f*ing THINK the way this guy obviously does. The he directed that take of second when he was caught off base yesterday — just awesome.

  3. Was That was the best bullpen performance in months? 3 innings no hits! Then again I think clev already had their bags packed because they only got 2 hits off Rodon.

    1. The thing that made me raise an eyebrow is that they had trouble with some of the imaging because of “edema.” I don’t know if that’s a symptom of thoracic outlet or anything in particular but I’ve never heard of that happening. I know what edema is, just never seen it mentioned as an issue

    1. Judge’s edemas are in his ribs. I don’t think Judge’s symptoms sound like TOC. Judge has been mentioning consistent pain that has gotten worse over time. In a hitter, TOC presents in a similar way to pitchers. Pitchers get “dead arms,” while hitters get a tingly sensation in their arms. Judge hasn’t had that.

I think they’re just making sure that it’s nothing vascular, but his injury really seems more consistent with a bone bruise/rib fracture.

    2. Realistically is there any chance he plays within the 10 day IL window?

    3. I would certainly put the odds against it, but I don’t mind them waiting. It sucks in the short term 100%, as they REALLY could use Spencer Jones’ bat in this lineup instead of Volpe/Schuemann, but if you have even a slight chance of getting Judge back for three games at the end of the 10-days rather than automatically losing him for the 10 days, I think you have to take it.

One interesting idea, though, would be to send Schuemann down now for Jones, and recall Schuemann if Judge goes on the IL.

    4. Edema (swelling) is really nonspecific. It can be localized (in one spot) or systemic (all over). We see localized edema near injuries (eg fractures, tears, contusions), near vascular abnormalities (clots), near tumors, and of course near localized infections. Systemic edema can be a sign of systemic inflammation (autoimmune disease, sepsis), or of low oncotic pressure (ie, protein loss due to kidney dysfunction, liver dysfunction, gut losses, or malnutrition), or a side effect of certain medications.

Sometimes you can see and/or palpate the edema, but sometimes it’s deeper in the tissue and you need imaging to find it. Edema shows up easily on an MRI because it has water content – and one of the most basic MRI sequences, called T2, has brighter signal where there is more water.

Re: edema at ankles, that’s “dependent” edema, which just means there’s enough edema of whichever kind for it to be “hanging down” – collecting at a low point. In someone ambulatory, it’ll collect in the feet and legs. In someone bedbound, it’ll collect on whichever side they’re lying on (back or side), or in their pelvis/sacrum.

    5. Yeah, VJ, that’s why it is notable that they specifically said that the edemas Judge has are just around the area of the injury. It’s not like he has them in his arm or whatever.

  4. Before today’s 1-run win. From Katie S:

Yankees are now 6-12 in games decided by 1 run.

The 12 losses is tied for 2nd most in MLB.
The 6-12 (.333) record is 3rd worst in MLB.

  5. Dax Kilby Yankee #4 prospect should be a good fit. He was nursing an injury out of ST and didn’t play until May 28 where he got two ABs but hasn’t been seen since.

    1. He shouldn’t have gone 4 innings last out if they want to turn him into a 1/2 inning reliever capable of pitching every other day or every day at times. Now he can’t pitch for 5 days.

    2. Imagine what his numbers would be if he actually got to face Volpe and Wells.

  6. It’s weird that Spence played last night unless they plan on bringing the Martian back and skip rehab. Hes only been out not quite a month. Or do they plan on playing short handed? Do they really expect Judge back within the 10 day window?

  7. I think they should now take their time with Stanton, and only bring him back when he thinks he can play right field.

    Rice DH
    Goldschmidt 1B
    Bellinger LF
    Stanton RF
    Grisham CF
    Jazz 2B
    Caballero SS
    McMahon 3B
    Wells C

    is their best shot.

    1. Stanton playing the outfield is a recipe for another leg injury. He should DH. (Rice should be catching already.) Dominguez can play OF. But neither Dominguez nor Stanton should be rushed back. You want them healthy for the wild card game.

    2. The issue is that i just don’t think there’s any way they feel comfortable with Rice behind the plate, and if he’s not going to behind the plate, how do you bench Goldschmidt with the way that he is hitting? So I think it is worth it to go like this…

      Jones fills in right away
Dominguez joins as soon as he’s healthy, and he plays the outfield regularly until Stanton is not just able to HIT, but able to play the field, and then you bring in Stanton, and you do the big platoon between the four of them (with Stanton mostly being the rightfielder).

The interesting thing with THAT, though, is that once you have Stanton AND Dominguez on the team, I think Volpe has to be the guy who goes to the minors, as Schuemann would now have a vital role as the guy who comes in for defense late in the game.

      Your bench would be:

      Escarra
Dominguez (or whoever didn’t start that game – whether it be Goldy or Stanton)
      Rosario
      Schuemann

    1. Figure it’s two months total. Six weeks to heal, then two week to get back to playing in games.

Could have been a lot worse. The “good” thing is that they’ve been effectively playing without him the last month. And yes, don’t get me wrong, even a diminished Judge brings serious presence in the lineup, but if Stanton can return to the field, he could help a lot. Dominguez/Stanton/Goldschmidt/Rice platooning DH, RF, and 1B should work for a couple of months (Rice playing every day, of course).

  8. Judge’s relatively poor performance the last month just goes to show that these analytics nerds don’t know anything, the way they’ve been devaluing the RIB all these years.

    1. Babe Ruth broke Ribeye records, though he apparently preferred porterhouse.

    1. Yeah, but come the heck on, we’re basically talking 2023, as he barely missed time in those other years.

And the 2023 lineup was MUCH worse than the current lineup. The best hitter on the 2023 team was…uhmmm….not concussed Rizzo. Not injured LeMahieu. I guess Gleyber? And 2023 Gleyber was kind of mid (he did one of those things where he SUCKED in the first half, but DID get hot in the second half).
