From Josh Kirshenbaum:
That Tuesday was a rougher start for Max Fried shows you just how historically dominant the 31-year-old lefty has been this season.
Fried was unable to provide length in the Yankees’ 2-1, walk-off defeat to the Mariners in 11 innings at T-Mobile Park, in what was the first time this season New York has lost a game he’s started. He allowed one run in five innings, his shortest outing since Opening Day, on four hits.
“I think it was just a mix of everything,” Fried said. “Probably command, and then also facing a team that had a really good approach. It happens.”
Just to reiterate: “It happens” was Fried’s reaction to a five-inning start with one run allowed on four hits and two walks. Coming into the day, there had been 1,236 starts this season; just 235 of them — under 20% — met that threshold.
“I thought the whole night for him was a bit of a grind,” said manager Aaron Boone, who was ejected in the top of the ninth after arguing a called third strike on Jasson Domínguez. “It’s a testament to how good he is, being able to limit them to one run through five innings on a night where he had to work very hard.”
The Mariners’ strength is their pitching, so you’re going to lose some low-scoring games to them on occasion. I can’t get too worked up about it. I’m just happy Fried wasn’t a hard luck loser.
Still, with that in mind, the Yankees were still 0-14 with runners in scoring position, which is tied for their WORST EVER result with RISP. So, well, any time you have the franchise worst result in a stat, that’s not a good thing.
I wanted to feature Austin Wells’ popup in the 11th, but it wasn’t available, so I had to go with the bullshit call against Jasson Dominguez in the ninth for the featured image. I hate featuring it, as it wasn’t like Dominguez was going to get a hit off of Munoz anyways. At least Cruz, Leiter, Weaver, and Williams all looked great.
Fried looked a little gassed. Might it be worth skipping him every now and then in the rotation so that he isn’t gassed in September? (Not going to say October because who knows)
I don’t think this rotation is deep enough for that.
Oy
T Grisham (L) CF

C Bellinger (L) RF
A Volpe (R) SS
J Domínguez (S) LF
D LeMahieu (R) 2B
J Escarra (L) C
J Vivas (L) 3B
why can’t they drop volpe in the order, is he actually boone’s kid?
You could only drop him one spot. Boone loves alternating lefty/righty.
Volpe doing what he does.
To be fair to the Yankee offense, Woo really did look fantastic, and also they were screwed on key pitch calls a number of times.
