From Bryan Hoch:
Oswaldo Cabrera enjoyed the biggest offensive night of his young career, stroking four hits while driving in three runs as the Yankees rallied for a 7-1 victory over the Astros on Friday evening at Minute Maid Park.
Getting the Opening Day nod at third base in place of the injured DJ LeMahieu, Cabrera has collected six hits through the season’s first two games, carrying over the offensive changes that saw the 25-year-old finish his spring on a 9-for-24 (.375) hot streak.
Cabrera knocked a run-scoring single in the seventh before Juan Soto worked a bases-loaded walk that gave New York the lead, with the Bombers peppering Houston’s bullpen after they were largely handcuffed over six dominant frames by Cristian Javier.
I was not expecting Verdugo, Judge and Soto becoming such good buddies.
This was a weird one. Rodon was fascinating. He was VERY out of control, and yet, he had such great stuff that you have to have SOME optimism for him going forward, especially against teams not as good as Houston. Outside of Burdi and Beeter, the bullpen was mostly “okay,” but okay enough for a win.
The offense, similarly, was mostly “okay,” but hey, whatever, they scored seven runs and gave up one, that’s pretty cool overall!
Gleyber got hit on his thumb by a pitch. He was worried that he couldn’t grip the ball later in the game, and had himself removed from the game, but X-Rays were negative, so I’m sure it’s just swollen. I bet we’ll see Berti start in his place the next few games, though.
Soto twisted his ankle running the bases, but he says he is okay.
Those gutty, gritty Yankees.
Never mind Waldo getting 4 hits, the true hero of the day is Stanton for stat-padding in service of Pythag.
hooray blake-e-otomy
Soto walked to force in a run, but watch the catcher frame that pitch.
It didn’t work, but – damn!
Also: first place, baby!
Rortvedt hitting 667, Wells 000.
They had to trade Rortvedt, but man, was it annoying that the team that clearly was waiting for him all offseason was the fucking Rays.
that’s pretty unclear. I wouldn’t unnecessarily boogey man the rays.
The Rays had a glaring hole at catcher, and they tend to stress defense first behind the plate. Rortvedt was tailor made for them.
yes, but rortvedt, he sucks.
I presume no one is taking this seriously after 2 games.
