From Bryan Hoch:
The Yankees survived a sloppy second inning in which they committed three errors, limiting the damage to one run. They wriggled out of a bases-loaded, none-out jam in the fifth, surrendering just a sacrifice fly.
But that tightrope walk couldn’t last.
Luke Weaver surrendered a go-ahead RBI double to Nathaniel Lowe in the seventh inning and Roman Anthony added a two-run homer in the ninth, snapping the Yankees’ five-game winning streak with a 6-3 loss to the Red Sox on Thursday evening at Yankee Stadium.
“I feel like we definitely gave them spots to win,” Jazz Chisholm Jr. said. “I felt like tonight was one of those nights that we beat ourselves. Sometimes you’ve got to look in the mirror and say, ‘Hey, you beat yourself tonight. Tomorrow, come out better and focus more.’”
New York’s (69-58) loss dropped its advantage in the American League Wild Card chase to just a half-game over Boston (69-59). Lowe spoiled Weaver’s 32nd birthday with a seventh-inning knock as the Yankees have lost six of seven meetings between the rivals this season.
It was a terrible loss, but really, at the end of the day, it’s what comes AFTER it that will really determine what to make of this loss. If they get swept, then yeah, it’s a sign that they just fucking suck against the Red Sox. If they split the four games, then it won’t really mean much more than being a shitty loss.
The featured image is Luke Weaver giving up the go-ahead run. Weaver was just flat out GARBAGE in this one.
Still can’t believe Boone didn’t use Rosario against Wilson with the bases loaded and one run in in the fifth.
Other losses have felt worse, but this was totally on them. They could so easily have won this game. They SHOULD have won this game.
Also, Brian, let’s give Gil credit – it turns out that he can NOT have it, and even have the defense suck behind him, and NOT crumble. He was pretty damned good.
Gil wasn’t terrible, that WAS good. But it’s just baffling when you see how good his stuff is, and yet how poorly he uses it. Schlittler was the blueprint, and Gil was just, like, “Nah, I’ll just throw a gazillion pitches every inning instead.”
Gil COULD dominate. He just decides…NOT to.
Using weaver a night after he threw 20 pitches and wasn’t great while taking out leiter who retired the two hitters he faced under pressure all in the first game of a 4 game series is such a dumb move it can only be called a “Boone”.
There are managers who ride the hot hand. Boone is the opposite. Play well and get benched; play poorly and keep on playing. What a moron.
I hate Chapman.
Boone was panicking by using Weaver there. Using Doval was worse. Leiter should’ve been the first one in.
I thought he should’ve absolutely used Rosario to hit for McMahon with the bases loaded. Later in the game he should’ve used the Martian or Wells to hit for Volpe who is a 189 hitter vs RHPs. He has some matchup versatility now that he refuses to use.
There was a clear and obvious lane where he could use Leiter for Story in the 7th, and then Hill for the lefties, and Boone instead went to Weaver. It was inexplicable.
Lost series to the Phillies, Cubs, Marlins, Texas and Houston. In all those series the opponents looked like the better team. Yanks are 6-17 vs Toronto, Boston, Detroit and Houston but 5-1 vs Seattle., 4-13 s Sawx and Jays. We have a run differential of +1 over the last 30 days. Fried our stopper is a total mess. Our everyday SS is tied for the 2nd worst OBP in the MLB and has an OAA of -7 and fielding run value in the 13th percentile. The pen has the 9th worst era in baseball.
So you’re saying… there’s a chance?!!!
Why exactly did Cash sign Paul Blackburn a 31 yo reliever who has never been good but has been especially bad this year to a major league contract? If Boone has him he will use him.
I’m assuming like Jake bird they “see something” and I’m betting like Jake Bird it will cost them a game or two before he’s released.
The fact that this team is in playoff position despite the massive hole at SS, the total lack of fundamentals, the weak bullpen, and the dumbest in-game manager most of us have ever seen only highlights the talent they have. Which is I guess partly due to having the highest payroll in the league. And Aaron Judge.
But Jake Bird has had some success just not in the months before he joined the Yankees. Paul Blackburn has never been good.
He’s only replacing Allan Winans as the long man. I don’t mind it. He pitched pretty well for the Mets as a long man.
Did the Yankees actually just release Bird?
No, they have control over him for the next three years. I assume he’s just going to be an offseason project.
I wonder if you got Blake alone what he would say he likes more, working with guys offseason or keeping them on track in season
Remember when cashman traded for Andrew Heaney because they saw something and the pitching coach could fix him? That worked out great. 7.3 ERA in 35 innings. Probably cost us home field advantage in the one game playoff. At home Stanton hits 2-3 HRs instead of shots off the wall. Sigh
Yeah, the Heaney thing was very ungood. A lot of these moves blow up out of nowhere, like the idea that the Giants’ All-Star closer can’t handle middle relief is not an expected result. The idea that the multi-All-Star Brewers closer, who had been dominant for YEARS would just suck in any high leverage situation here is not an expected result. That Andrew Heaney couldn’t be fixed in a month, though, was NOT unexpected, so it didn’t make any sense. Perhaps they felt no one else would want him, and they could fix him in the offseason after re-signing him cheap? But then the Dodgers felt THEY could fix him, and offered him a ton of money. Either way, it wasn’t a good acquisition in that situation. At the time, I seriously just preferred signing someone off of the scrap heap.
Bc: I’ve often thought
there are some guys that can’t handle the spotlight. Whether they can be identified in advance is an interesting question.
Trevor Hoffman was a great relief pitcher but in his first post season appearance he blew it. His first WS appearance he blew it. (Scott Brosius) The one-game playoff in 2007? Blew it. Had he come to NY I think he would have been terrible, like DevoW. Identifying which guys “can’t handle the truth” would be a great skill set for a Yankee GM.
That was always the possibility for closers, I can get it, but that Doval can’t handle MIDDLE RELIEF is just inexplicable to me. I’d just as soon demote him to the minors like Bird and call up fucking Ian Hamilton or some shit.
Cruz is very close, probably one more outing. Yarbrough another week.
Completely agree, you can’t blame Cashman for acquisitions where the players underperform all reasonable expectations.
You MIGHT put at least some of that on how they’re handled and deployed once they’ve been acquired, though – that is, on the coaching staff and the manager.
Rice 1b, Martian LF, phenom second worst OBP (tie) in the MLB moved up to 7th. How bad would phenom have to be to lose his everyday status? Yankee regulars Judge, Cody and phenom; Trent lately pretty much.
The Martian lost his job and he’s a much better hitter. Though of course they blame him for not learning LF and playing CF in the minors. Yeah, it’s his fault you’re playing him out of position in his rookie year.
Caballero’s OBP is 59 points higher than phenom’s. He’s been good for 3 defensive outs above average, phenom is -7. Volpe has 4 defensive runs saved, Caballero 3 with about 1/4 the playing time.
The thing that drives me nuts about the Caballero/Volpe thing is that they have MORE CONTROL over Caballero than Volpe! Caballero was this brilliant pickup, who they control for FOUR years (Volpe just for three), and they’re just going to fucking BURY HIM when he’s one of their hottest hitters?
Make it make sense!
“Make it make sense!”

No.
