In the top of the 10th inning on Wednesday night, booming chants of “Let’s go Yankees” echoed through Angel Stadium, making Anaheim sound like the Bronx West as New York’s lineup erupted for a two-out rally.
When pinch-hitter Austin Wells stepped to the plate with the bases loaded, the Yankees were staring at another frustrating extra-inning jam. Instead, Wells grounded a two-run single to right field off Angels reliever Luke Murphy, unlocking a five-run 10th-inning surge that propelled New York to a 6-3 victory over the Angels.
The clutch single triggered a chain reaction of four consecutive two-out RBI hits. Cody Bellinger followed with a sharp line drive to center to score Jazz Chisholm Jr. Trent Grisham lined a single to left to bring home Wells. And Ben Rice capped the rally with a liner to right to score Bellinger.
“[Murphy is] tough on lefties, and Wellsy has a long at-bat and eventually outlasts him,” Yankees manager Aaron Boone said. “To do all the damage that we did there with two outs was massive, and turned a light day offensively into a really good way to end this series and head into an off-day.”
Like the other day, when Will Warren really deserved the featured image in the 16-1 drubbing of the Red Sox, Cam Schlittler PROBABLY deserved the featured image for this one over Austin Wells, but darnit, a Yankee getting a two-out bases loaded single in the top of the 10th inning? On a groundball that squeezed past both the second baseman AND the first baseman? Come on, that has got to be the featured image!
That said, Cam was great. If the Yankees offense was better, he would have had a win, but alas, it took extras to get this win in the books, but boy, was it fun to see the Yankees scoring FIVE runs in the 10th.
The Rays lost, so the Yankees are now four back in the loss column with less than a month to go (BUT, very importantly, with four games left at home against the Rays in the penultimate series of the year. A sweep would give the Yankees the tiebreaker, but you would like to imagine that even winning the series might give them a chance at outright finishing ahead of the Rays). It’s not impossible!
Especially since Aaron Judge’s return seems to be drawing nearer.

Is it possible that Wells will have more RBIs in the last 30 games of the season than the first 132? Just a few more hits and a few blowouts with position players pitching and I think he can do it.
Jeff is right that Cam seems to be throwing more than pitching. Though it seems to be working well. If he studies with Fried he could be unstoppable. Already he’s getting (admittedly sorta arbitrary sounding) comparisons to Randy Johnson.

that he can blow hitters away is incredible. I salivate at the notion that he could conceivably improve meaningfully specifically in terms of career longevity. Looking at his numbers, it’d be hard to improve on them (seems 5.5ish is about the tops in the current scoring environment), but when the velo starts to decline, or when he can’t woof every start, his capacity to pitch, should he improve in this area, will yield tremendous dividends.
That’s not how young pitchers with great heaters operate.

By the way, a friend of mine was celebrating the Red Sox big comeback win, so I thought I’d read about it, and it was, like, a 3-1 deficit in the 6th, 3-2 in the 7th, 3-3 in the 8th, 5-3 in the 9th (and 6-3 headed to the bottom of the ninth)? I mean, good for them, but I wouldn’t really call that much of a “big comeback win” when the win was 6-5.
I saw 6-5, and I figured they were down 5-4 headed into the ninth or some shit.
