I cannot get how much social media is melting down about Spencer Jones not keeping his gig when Judge returns, despite him clearly keeping his job when Judge returns, as seen from him, you know, batting ahead of Grisham in the lineup and starting tonight instead of Grisham with Ramos playing. It’s so weird to be preemptively angry at a Yankee decision when it seems clear that that ISN’T the decision they’re making. Spencer Jones has played his way into a starting role. That’s awesome. We should be thrilled about that. The Yankees, I assure you, are thrilled with that. The idea that Cashman is, like, “I’m mad that the guy I drafted in the first round is hitting too well to sit. I need to start Trent Grisham instead because he got a qualifying offer” is too silly.
Anyhow, Cam Schlittler really needs to get his shit together and dominate this Angels lineup tonight.
Me thinks there’s gonna be a dodgers’ firesale at the end of the season. Yamamoto???
Schmidt had a good minor league outing. Should be a huge boon for the bullpen.
i have always really despised the la angels of anaheim
How devilish.
I love it when the game plan is to swing early and often. Detmers 14 pitches thru 2.
Thirty pitches through 3.
That was a ridiculous challenge tactically by Ali, 3rd inning, 0-0 count, and he was wrong by a lot. Doesn’t Boone have any rules
If Escarra was one of the top 10/15 catchers in the big leagues on both sides of the plate then Ali Sanchez must be an All Star.
They made the least out of that.
What’s the story with Lombard. Is he still day to day, at least until they announce he’s through for the season. They pulled phenom early today. Coincidence?
I think it’s one of those things where they really should just IL him at this point. Have him ready for the playoffs. Volpe can fill in fine for a couple of weeks.
peraza flashing the leather
Yeah, he’s always been an amazing fielder. That’s why I love that a defensive fuckup by him helped the Yankees win earlier this season.
Cabby has been fucking EXPOSED during this period where he’s been playing every day due to injuries to McMahon and Lombard. It’s like he doesn’t even have a CHANCE up there.
Same career OPS as phenom.
Maybe the Yankees still have a problem with LHPs
I am legit STUNNED that that went out. FUCK.
That was brutal. I cannot believe that just kept fucking carrying. Wow.
Going by Jones I thought it had a good chance.
I love how much it shocked Schlittler, too!
Blah.
This lineup really letting Schlittler down. The Angels oddly have the Yankess’ number this season.
If Tampa lost the Yankees would have an opportunity to gain a game. But if they won then the Yankees need to win to not fall further behind. Baseball cliches.
What’s the difference? They need to win every game.
Using Wells to PH is such a Boone move. Good grief.
EDIT: Okay, he hit a single.
I think we know that they’re going to lose this game.
Getting Detmers out didn’t help
Jesus fucking christ, Benny.
It’s weird not to use McMahon.
It’s SUPER weird not to use McMahon.
McMahon could’ve done that. Me too.
They sure do love taking strike three.
This is a mistake, D’arnaud is a Yankee killer.
I’m truly not disagreeing with the move, but I hate Bednar in non-save situations.
It’s the standard move.
Christ, Rosario is a bad fielder, not much of a fielder, AND a terrible baserunner. He’s the complete package!
Spencer with the golden sombrero.
The two worst team in xtra inning games playing each other in the 10th. Classic! LA trying to give it all away.
Wells on deck, just who you want up. Ugh.
These choking fucking assholes. But don’t worry, Austin Wells will come through! Definitely!
Wells just looks so lost up there. Just hoping they throw balls.
Keep it up with those clutch popups!
I’m still mad at Rosario for not scoring on the single.
rosario would have been out by three steps
Oh, he’d totally be out, but that makes me mad that he ran so poorly.
Did NOT expect that! It got by BOTH defenders!
Hard ground balls sometimes find a hole. Sometimes they don’t.
this game is suddenly much more enjoyable.
Rius! Numerous runs!! And from unlikely sources.
Rice getting in on the action!
Who do they use in the bottom of the 10th?
Is the 4th straight hit still clutch?
Don’t blow this, Fulmer.
That isn’t what I had in mind, Fulmer.
I mean, it was BARELY a home run, but still, what the fuck, Fulmer?
Starting the next batter after a home run with a ball way out of the strike zone was not the best approach.
A 5 run lead with the man on second is really a four run lead. Close call whether to go Blackburn or Headrick with a day off.
I agree, but Fulmer should be able to protect a four-run lead.
Fulmer, buddy, come the fuck on.
Yay, win.
Per Katie S —
Yay win. Yay Cam. Yay singles, they’re a worthy extra-innings goal in the Manfred-era regular-season.
And funny, Jones reminded me of Judge today too.
Ohtani joined Spencer with a golden sombrero.
“If Tampa lost the Yankees would have an opportunity to gain a game. But if they won then the Yankees need to win to not fall further behind. Baseball cliches.

YES!
Thank you.
What a win!
They’ve had a bunch of those lately (knock on wood, fingers crossed, which isn’t easy).
I haven’t watched any games this year, again, just following via box scores and condensed games. With that perspective, I think we all need to take a step back to acknowledge how amazing Cam Schlittler has been. I’ve followed the Yankees since 1987 and cannot remember any of their home-grown pitchers coming anywhere close to this level of dominance. Maybe Rivera, but that’s a very different role. It’s truly incredible.
Severino was great for a couple of seasons, and incredibly fun to watch, but even he wasn’t as good as Schlittler this year.
25-year-old Andy Pettitte threw 240 and a third innings in 1997 to a 2.88 ERA in the midst of the steroid era. I think that’s probably the best I’ve seen a homegrown Yankee pitcher pitch. However, Pettitte never pitched that well ever again (he had only one season above 4 bWAR after 1997, and he had 5.6 bWAR in 1996, and 8.4 bWAR in 1997, so we all obviously thought he’d be a lot better than he turned out to be), while we can still hope that Schlittler keeps this up.
My only issue with Schlittler is that he’s not a particularly good pitcher in the classical sense, ie he’s a thrower. He’s like a rich-man’s Chad Green – great tunneling and plenty of woof. If, what I’m hoping, he becomes more artful he could be even better.
I’m old enough to have been in high school to see Guidry 1978 so Cam isn’t there yet but truly great to see.
