From Bryan Hoch:
Luke Weaver promised to be “raw and honest” in remarks following the Yankees’ most recent defeat, saying that it has been “devastating” to absorb his performances since returning from the injured list.
The reliever insists the ball feels good coming out of his hand, but hitters are telling a different story, squaring him up with regularity. Weaver surrendered a home run for a third consecutive outing on Friday, and it was a costly one.
So, on Thursday night, Luke Weaver came in, threw 21 pitches, and gave up a two-run home run. That was his second appearance in the Toronto series. In his first appearance, he gave up a grand slam. Okay, so 21 pitches the previous night, pitching in a day game, home runs allowed in two straight outings, definitely the guy you want to go to in with a one-run lead in the 7th, right?
This is Boone to a tee. To force him to make a move, you have to be PUTRID for a LONG period of time. For instance, it took him FOREVER to stop going to Clay Holmes for saves. It took him way too long to stop going to Devin Williams for saves. It took him way too long to continue to trust in Anthony Volpe late in the game. And he’s STILL sticking with Oswald Peraza (by the way, the Yankees are interested in Ryan McMahon, who actually IS a good defensive third baseman, but he can’t hit, either!).
Something is likely physically wrong with Luke Weaver, who returned quickly from an injury that normally keeps pitchers out for much longer, but even if there’s nothing wrong, and he’s just going through a slump, then YOU STOP USING HIM IN HIGH LEVERAGE SITUATIONS. I understand that the rest of the bullpen fucking sucks, too, but you basically try to get 2 innings out of Tim Hill or whatever. You don’t go to Weaver there.
You let him try to work his shit out in lower leverage situations, and then slowly work him back to the high leverage stuff.
That said, don’t get me wrong, even for a shitty manager like Boone, it has got to be maddening when, no matter who he throws out there, they suck. The Yankees keep calling up these pitchers who are dominating in Triple A, and they get up here, and they get DESTROYED. Not “pitching worse here than in the Minors,” but going from dominant to GODAWFUL. Clayton Beeter has been excellent in the minors, and he came up here and was just throwing batting practice. Allan Winans, Geoff Hartlieb, they were both excelling in the minors and then were dogshit in the Majors. So, while I don’t meant to make any excuse for Boone, who sucks, that’s still a tough spot to be in when everyone you bring in sucks. For instance, I didn’t like using Devin Williams in the 9-9 game in the 8th in Toronto, but it didn’t mean that he should have SUCKED, either. He was TERRIBLE. That’s not on Boone. That’s on Williams, who had been GREAT for, like, a fucking MONTH before that point.
These pitchers shouldn’t all be sucking at the same time. It’s fucking weird ass shit, man.
The good thing is that I doubt they can keep this up forever, they’re bound to improve just by luck eventually. Cash will also likely bring in at least one new reliever between now and the trade deadline.
Marcus Stroman was bad, but he wasn’t THAT bad. Again, if he’s your #5 starter, that’s honestly not that bad.
The offense was okay. They actually led the Martian off, and he was great. Let’s stick with that.
The Blue Jays continued their hot streak, and are now two games up on the Yankees, but the Rays blew a late 3-1 lead to the Twins, so the Yankees remain tied for the top Wild Card spot, which, if you’re not going to win the division, you at least want that top Wild Card spot.
The featured image is Weaver being all sad and shit with fireworks in the background going off after he blew the game.
This was a really good time to be away on trips to various counties.
Looks so goddamn depressing.

Boone preaches calm amid Yankees’ slide: ‘I don’t want us to flinch’
Boone’s brief closed-door remarks included a reminder that his Yankees are “the best team in the league,” according to infielder Jazz Chisholm Jr.
See you in 2027 Clarke. Clarke Schmidt “likely” will need Tommy John, Boone says
Do we have to play today? Aww, darn it.
Weaver has a lifetime ERA+ of 88, so maybe that is what is going on, a return to the mean.
Cole, Gil, Stroman, Yarbrough, Cruz twice, and Clarke.
