From Jackson Stone:
For a few seconds, Pablo Reyes had no idea where to go. After slipping between third base and home in a scoreless game during the eighth inning, Reyes slammed on the brakes, initially taking a turn back to third.
That’s when Reyes heard third-base coach Luis Rojas yelling, “Keep going, keep going, keep going.” So after another moment of hesitation, that’s what he did — breaking for home with the game on the line.
A few chaotic seconds later, Reyes slid head-first into home ahead of a tag that never came from catcher Freddy Fermin, who couldn’t corral the errant throw, as the Yankees took the lead and earned the sweep in an eventual 1-0 victory on Thursday night at Kauffman Stadium.
“Pablo juked him out, I think,” said starter Will Warren, who allowed just four hits over 5 2/3 scoreless innings.
“I think [Reyes] was smiling [once he got back in the dugout] because he was thinking the same thing we were,” Warren said. “ … We were all pumped, I mean, that changed the game. Throwing that punch, that was the first punch all game.”
Technically, Will Warren deserved the featured image for this one, but come on, the sight of Pablo Reyes turning the corner at third, stumbling, trying to go back, changing his mind and heading for the plate, being a dead duck at home if not for an errant throw to the plate by the pitcher…you can see it all in his face as he sort of collapsed on the plate after scoring. Great photo.
Anyhow, Boone tried to put the shittiest possible lineup out there, and he succeeded, with the Yankees scoring just a single unearned run, but, hey, they got the win. Now they can go get swept in Fenway.
Good sweep! Great to winb a game like this.
Thoughts:
1. Low run-scoring environment.
2. You can say he’d have been a dead duck at the plate, if they’d made a great throw, catch and tag, which they didn’t, but you can just as well say that if they’d made the perfect throw, catch and tag they’d still have had no chance if he hadn’t stopped between third and home.
3. Two big parts of growing as a pitcher – be able to do well enough when you don’t have your best stuff, and be able to deal with adversity. At least one of thse, the first, Warren showed today. I think he’s got a real chance – in other words, Stroman’s ceiling isn’t far from Warren’s floor.
Oh sure, he would have scored easily had he just kept running. But that’s just screwup #1, right? Stopping when he shouldn’t, and then starting when he shouldn’t have.
But hey, it DID work out, which was great!
Absolutely. The point is that they’re even. They both screwed up – and he scored. If they both HADN’T screwed up, he’d also have scored!
Second win of the season due to a bad throw home (Pete A on the Mets).
I logged off for a week due to the death of my mom. Did I miss anything big? Do the Yankees have a 3b yet?
Sorry to hear that. May her memory be a blessing.
Shit. Condolences man.
Terrible news, condolences.
So sorry man. Hope you and your dad can find some comfort in remembering her. Hope your dad’s heart is holding up okay, and hope you are too. This is a lot of hell to go through all at once.
The Yankees’ third baseman? I Don’t Know.
My condolences about your mom.
The Red Sox are coming to town, the Yankees record is 3rd best in the majors and better than the Dodgers, and you guys just don’t care!
To that I say, pffffft
Throwing Yarbrough against Crochet less than a week after the last matchup just sort of dulls any real enthusiasm that I could muster over this series. And then Rodon going right back against Boston (IN Fenway!) is also a daunting task.
Meanwhile, Toronto is getting Philly again after taking two out of three against them last weekend, as well. It’s just not the most ideal situation for the Yankees at the moment.
