Swagger arrives when Jazz Chisholm Jr. does, following him from the Yankee Stadium parking garage into the clubhouse and out toward the field. Hardly one to shy away from any spotlight, the infielder admits there have been times this season when it has felt like he’s putting on an act.
With stars like Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton missing, Chisholm said he has sensed pressure to carry the Yankees’ lineup. Still, he knows that when his swing feels right, he’s a difference-maker – as in Monday night’s 8-5 win over the Pirates, when he blasted two homers and drove in five runs.
“I’m not the same kind of player as Judge,” Chisholm said. “I feel like I was trying to overdo it; trying to hit a five-run home run with nobody on base. I feel like us coming together and talking about certain stuff, realizing that we do this as a team – I feel like that has helped a lot.”
It was the 10th multihomer game of Chisholm’s career; including Sunday’s win over the Dodgers, Chisholm has homered three times in the past two games, giving him 16 for the season. Both of Chisholm’s homers Monday came off Braxton Ashcraft – a three-run blast in the first inning, then a two-run shot in the third.
The outburst came after, according to Chisholm, teammates Judge and Anthony Volpe offered him a boost.
“[Confidence is] the biggest tool I’ve got,” Chisholm said. “Sometimes they’ve seen me dragging a little bit lately. They just were like, ‘Bro, let’s not forget who you are. You’re the greatest in the world. You are Jazz Chisholm.’ … I always think I have confidence, but I just feel like I didn’t fully believe in myself at a point in time.”
Jazz is just the weirdest damn guy.
But hey, I love it when he hits big home runs!
Ryan Weathers choked like a fucking asshole, but I’ll give him credit for battling through the next couple of inning, even dealing with a first and second, no outs situation and getting out of it with no runs scored. Boone, though, continues to lean HEAVILY on Headrick and Cruz. Headrick can’t pitch every fucking day, Boone! He pitched two thirds of an inning on Friday, two innings on Sunday, and an inning and two thirds in this one! That’s too damn much!
But boy, he’s been excellent. And Cruz, when he is locating his pitches, holy shit, is he good. He gets ahead, and then you’re fucked, because you have to protect the plate and he gets to throw that insane splitter.
Anyhow, great win, especially with the Red Sox winning their 14th straight game (and, more importantly, the Rays kicking the Blue Jays’ ass).
The Yankees really need the weather to cooperate with them these next two days, to help them get to next week and Max Fried’s return while avoiding needing a fifth starter until then.

I think people are overreacting to Bryan Hoch’s recent comments about Stanton not being close to returning. I think by “not close,” he just meant that there is no clear timetable for his first rehab game. That’s not necessarily a big deal. Dude JUST started running again, how could there possibly be a clear timetable yet?
So, 2027?
In hindsight has the Stanton trade worked out? I say NO. Totally unreliable as he only played one full season (ok maybe two if you squint); 11.2 WAR (or a bit more than 1 great season of judge over a total of 9 years!) for how much $$? And it seemingly prevented them from spending on other free agents who were better fits. Even at the time many here said that a second right smasher (actually, a third because we thought Sanchez was going to continue to be awesome) was not what the team needed.
I think that trade and not getting Verlander will be the epitaph on Judges Yankee Tombstone.
Has there been some debate over whether it worked out? It clearly hasn’t. Dude has been more hurt than healthy. He averaged 515 plate appearances over his career until he got here, and then has only exceeded 515 plate appearances once (his first season here). I don’t think anyone would ever argue that the Stanton deal has worked out.
Still, as far as sunk costs go, he hasn’t been too big of a deal, especially because he tends to come alive in the playoffs.
The sunk cost isn’t just the money, it’s committing a roster spot to the guy for 6 seasons and basically taking an O-fer anytime Judge is out. They’ve punted an outfield position for 4 seasons because they didn’t want to add anyone else high-priced until they had to with Cody Bellinger (and Grisham this season).
Getting Stanton kept them out of the running for Harper.
But going forward what do you do? Presumably he’s not going to retire. Do you wait until 2027 and then if he’s not healthy release him? Try to work out a Griffey/Bonilla settlement?
The Yankees are only on the hook for $10 million after this year. they could just release him

On Judge, when he finally admitted he was hurt and they imaged him, there was swelling. Now I don’t think swelling lasts for a month, so it is quite likely that by playing hurt he reinjured/made the original injury worse.
There is about a 99% chance that he had a bone bruise that developed into a full fracture by playing on it for a month. It was total macho stupidity from Judge.
“I’m hurt, but I gotta help the team! I’ll just will my injury away!”
19 year old Wilkerson De Peña, acquired for Peraza, is currently hitting 359/1099 in the FCL. He is leading the league in home runs and OPS. He is second in BA. He’s hit 16 home runs, one short of the league record. Only one other hitter is in double digits.

Hilariously, Boone today clarified the Stanton thing in the exact way that I thought it was intended, that “no time table” simply meant that he literally did not know what the time table was, not that Stanton wasn’t anywhere close to returning.
They’re probably going to have to use Elmer for one of the games tomorrow, right? I imagine they’ll want to try to keep the other guys on schedule.
Or no? Does the off day on Thursday, plus Fried returning next week keep this from fucking the rotation up?
If Elmer is coming up here, can he also take Goldy to the factory?

The use of Jones in this doubleheader as the 27th man is so fucking irritating. It’s them saying, “If we could, we’d start Jones against a righty.” But you CAN! Just send down Volpe!!
