From Bryan Hoch:
Carlos Rodón sat hunched forward on the bench in the visiting dugout at Rogers Centre, his elbows resting on his thighs. He’d worked hard to get through four innings, evidenced by the sweat seeping through his uniform top, as though he’d run through a sprinkler on a summer day.
The evening was a grind for Rodón, who leaned heavily on his fastball and struggled to generate swings and misses to escape from sticky situations. The Blue Jays wore Rodón down, gassing the left-hander early as the Yankees absorbed their third consecutive defeat, a 5-4 loss on Tuesday night.
“I give them props, because they had some really good at-bats,” Rodón said. “They made me work. It was tough. I wish I was better tonight. I had good stuff; I had stuff to get guys out, but they had a good approach.”
This is why I was saying I don’t know if you can even blame Matt Blake for Rodon, as listen to the dipshit. Dude, we all saw you, you clearly did NOT have the “stuff to get guys out,” because you weren’t getting guys out. They were fouling off all of your “good stuff.” You pitched like a moron, and your stuff was not as good as it should be. That said, his stuff is almost always JUST good enough to not get rocked when he’s healthy, so the Yankees really should have done better in this game, as it was there for the taking, but they continued to play shitty defense, and can’t hit enough. I’m waiting on the, “Oh, we didn’t say, but yeah, Judge has been playing hurt all season” announcement.
Stroman better actually give them some length on Wednesday.
Rodon’s FIP and WHIP – even before yesterday – was telling a different story than his ERA.
It’s only been 20 innings, but his FIP, WHIP, H/9, BB/9 are awful.
The two years he was good/great look like the aberration otherwise he’s been a league average pitcher with health problems. Little wonder neither the Giants or Cubs fought to get him back. As Chris pointed out his WHIP is 1.678.
Cash might’ve made the same mistake with DJ by resigning him for 6 years off his two aberrant Yankee years.
Honestly, he’s been better than I expected. I think his back injury robbed him of his effectiveness, but he’s slowly bouncing back, so I’m willing to give him some time to get right. His stuff SHOULD be dominating.
Eh, his statcast metrics are underwhelming and it looks like he’s been getting very lucky on not getting barreled balls. His barrel % so far is lower than most years, sometimes significantly, including the seasons where he was Cy Young material. Meanwhile most everything else looks similar to last season, maybe slightly better.
