The Yankees say they have not decided how they’ll adjust the rotation once Gerrit Cole is ready to reclaim his ace slot. Perhaps so, but this much is certain: Whatever their formula between now and October, Luis Gil deserves to be a part of it.
Gil continued to make the most of his unexpected chance in the starting five, permitting just an infield hit across 6 1/3 innings in the Yankees’ 5-0 victory over the Mariners on Thursday afternoon at Yankee Stadium.
“It’s being focused on what I need to do out there, going out and executing a plan of attack,” Gil said through an interpreter. “You look at this team and the support they’ve given me all year round; a combination of many different things have led me to this.”
Three relievers combined to finish the shutout in relief of Gil, who improved to 5-0 with an 0.59 ERA in five May starts. As he exited in the seventh, Gil received a standing ovation from the crowd of 43,121, beaming as he raised his cap high.
I liked Gil enough that I was hoping he would win the fifth spot in the rotation back when that seemed like it was in doubt (I really do wonder how much it really WAS in doubt, as Gil was performing obviously better than Beeter and Warren during Spring Training, so I wonder if it wasn’t some manufactured drama from the beat guys), but I sure didn’t think he’d be pitching like THIS.

With only SLIGHTLY better luck on Monday night, the Yankees would have taken 3 out of 4 in this series. They are playing some strong baseball at the moment. Eleven straight games of their pitchers going five inning allowing two runs or less. How is that even POSSIBLE?!
They have a tough, long road trip coming up, though, now, with nine games in ten days on the West Coast (it’s weird to make them have their off day on the road, and not BEFORE they go on the road, right?). Hopefully they continue to get strong pitching.

And if they could move him, they should move Stanton after the season, if he maintains this pace. Sell high.
I’d move Stanton now if they can find a taker. Jasson will be here soon enough. Wait too long and he’ll slump and be untradeable.
I just don’t see how there could be any takers for him right now. If he gets through a full season healthy, there might be someone who would take him if the Yankees ate SOME money, but I don’t think you’re getting anyone to bite right now.
Did anyone see the crazy ending last night in Chicago with the Orioles and White Sox? The Orioles were up 8-2 heading into the ninth, but had given up four runs so far, and there were runners on first and second for Benintendi with one out.
Benintendi pops up, and the umpires call the infield fly rule. Andrew Vaughn was on second, and he backs up to go back to second base on the pop-up. While he is backing up, he bumps into Gunnar Henderson (Vaughn is looking at the pop up and is backing up with his back to Henderson). Henderson easily moves around him, gets into position, and waits for the pop fly to land.
The umpire then calls Vaughn out for interference, ending the game as an 8-6 Orioles victory.
