Smith is coming off of a strong start. I imagine this will be the return of the “Can’t hit” Yankees, especially with Austin Wells inexplicably moved up to the #6 spot in the lineup!
With Boston and Toronto both losing before this game even began, this is going to be a brutal loss.
Expanded the zone a BIT there, but not awful.
Yeah, a ground out with that.
It would be a brutal loss even if they both win. Any loss, especially to an under 500 team is brutal. I see many brutal losses in the next 2 weeks.
That’s a rough result on a two strike count.
Yeah it’s a tough play but Gold Glove phenom should make that play.
Are they planning to bring that guy back?
He’s slated to retire on his 41st birthday. The festivities are already planned.
What’s the definition of “meekly” again? Ah, thanks for showing me, got it.
Once Jazz is retired it’s like there are 4 September callups next in the lineup.
Too many pitches in the first inning (18); the guy for the Mets went 8-innings the other night and threw 95 pitches. The ChiSox pitcher with only 22 in two innings Serioulsy?
And going 3-0 on Robertson? Then K’s him; too many pitches.
Lagrange our #2 prospect 3.2ip 2r 5h 6k 6BB
Spencer now 278/926 wow from over 400/1300 start
#1 Pick 18yo Dax Kilby 340/852
I get the Schlittler complaints but FFS there isn’t even a percentile that describes how much he’s exceeded our expectations.
Exceeded whose expectations, though?
Mine bigly.
That was some AB by Volpe. 😏
The now below .719 OPS Jasson. 🙁
is .719 some special threshold I’m not aware of?
Sinking fast. Very disappointing.
We’re not scoring 10 today but are we capable of scoring 3 or 4 against a good but not great pitcher who’s not throwing meatballs? If not we’re in trouble against Houston, Detroit, Toronto and especially Boston. Were like a prizefighter who accumulates a string of 1 round knockouts but when he meets someone with boxing skills he’s lost.
Anybody see Gerry Clooney fight Larry Holmes?
Shane Smith has a 3.87 era and a 4.13 FIP. He might beat us but he shouldn’t dominate us.
Ruocco gets so excited about a routine play.
Three innings, 54 pitches against a low level lineup.
That was good.
Judge shouldn’t have missed that one, and he didn’t.
It’s neck and neck
phenom 209 675
phenom C
Yeah we’re gonna beat Crochet or Skubal or Bello who doesn’t give up home runs?
We might beat Dustin May and avoid being swept st Fenway.
Hitting a 233 hitter to start the inning is ungood.
And the guy winds up scoring.
Sloppy, sloppy baseball to blow the lead.
The Yankees really don’t seem like they like giving Schlittler run support for some reason.
I don’t think Grisham should be running here.
Belli has been sputtering a bit lately. He DID have the homer on Thursday.
Broooootal strikeout on ball four by Belli.
Hell, he also swung over a ball earlier in the count, so it was more like Ball Five.
Smith is a pretty good pitcher, but he’s not THIS good. They’re swinging at some awful pitches.
Boy, Schlittler’s defense has done him NO favors tonight.
Boone made the mistake of using low leverage Williams in a high leverage situation. NOT GOOD!
Who else should he have used? Schlittler needs to throw fewer pitches so he can go a little deeper in a game, especially against a lineup like the White Sox. The Mets rookie went 8-innings on 95 pitches against the Phillies lineup a few days ago.
Yeah, fair enough, I guess Williams was a better option than, say, Leiter.
Of course.
Going 3-2 here is legit nuts by Williams.
Who loses it in the tenth? Leiter, I guess?
Wells on second base in the tenth with Volpe, McMahon and Cabellero is going to be high-larious.
I suppose Bednar could lose it first in the ninth. Mead leads off, and they can’t get that guy out.
Three hit in nine innings.
Nice preview of the next couple of weeks. At least Hunter Brown won’t pitch in the Houston series. Framber SHOULD be pitching on Monday, but I wouldn’t be surprised if they push him back to make sure he faces the Yankees.
WHY ARE YOU BUNTING?!?!
These fucking assholes. It’s Austin Wells. He can’t fucking run. This is just terrible bullshit.
The Yankees way. Who needs fundamentals?
How do you walk Caballero? That’s pretty awful pitching.
The Yankees hate hitting with RISP.
Sending Wells on contact was just so crazy. HE’S AUSTIN WELLS! HE CAN’T RUN!
This is going to be a tough loss for Bednar.
I mean, holy fuck, Bednar, what a goddamn amazing inning by him.
Tyler Alexander is absolutely walking Judge this inning, right?
TAKE SOME PITCHES, DUDES!
I mean, okay, Goldy hit that shit hard, but STILL!
Wow, an actual HIT with runners in scoring position?!!? Will wonders never cease?!
Do you try to double steal with Judge and Belli?
Jazz with a NON home run with RISP!? Whaaaaaaaaa?!
This team and their devotion to the fucking contact play.
Lucky hit followed by a real hit followed by a stupid play..,followed by a lucky hit.
Good synopsis.
I’d use Hill here. He’s give up the run, but he’ll probably get three outs before giving up three runs.
DOVAL?!!? ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME?!
Okay, fuck this shit. I can’t follow this stupidity.
Who in the bullpen will blow this? Doval? Is three runs a Doval-proof lead?
You guys have no faith in the great Doval!
Yay, extra innings win on the road.
As bad as the White Sox are, it was still a hell of a win.
But scoring on points only the pitchers get nigh scores.
Watching a movie then coming back of FF to watch. Devin at least didn’t lose it. Some awful ABs by Jazz, Wellz and McMahon. A couple of lucky hits and Jazz lining an OPPO DOUBLE! A dumb bunt and a beyond stupid suicide squeeze attempt and a failed contact play.
Yay win but 3 hits thru 9 against a pretty good starter and a pen that Binder keeps telling us his terrible.
Going for a *safety squeeze* with *Austin Wells* with a two-run lead and the infield in was *wild*
Watching the Yankees try to win an extra innings game on the road is like watching myself try to make a good decision in my 20s. I will absolutely take any win on the table. I say without irony that this was inspiring stuff.
Nobody asked Boone about either bunt not even the suicide squeeze?
Calla:
I’m not as ardently anti-Boone as many, but even I was amazed during the postgame as he talked about Alexander like he was prime Jesse Orosco. Of course Wells might have pushed a grounder through the drawn-in infield — I can only imagine Boone has PTSD from how often his team (particularly DJ) has grounded out to the drawn-in infield. But instead of bunting they should just run and hit. Butcher boy! Let’s roll this back to 1931
The other thing is Wells doesn’t look like he can bunt.
Trent was running hard after that fly ball, I’m not sure he realized that if he caught it the game was over.

Cam Schlitter has a 1.60 ERA in 6 August starts.
That’s the lowest ERA (min. 5 starts) in August by a Yankee since Ron Guidry in 1978 (1.34 ERA, 6 starts).
