Let’s see how many runs they can score off of Warren.
Wells did his Yankee tradition proud with that bases loaded K where even a DP would have gotten a run in.
Better than I expected, less than I desired.
Same with the bottom of the first.
As for the trade deadline, they needed to add two relievers, they added two relievers. We’ll see if Leiter is as good as his FIP here. If so, he’ll be a great pickup. The other guy is less important, but hey, we’ve seen seemingly minor relief pitcher acquisitions flourish here recently, so maybe he’ll be good, as well. He has a track record.
Beyond that, Jack Flaherty was one of only two big names traded, and was anyone really interested in trading a haul for Jack Flaherty? The Dodgers gave up a legit prospect in Thayron Liranzo to get him. The Yankees didn’t really have anyone LIKE Thayron Liranzo in their system. The closest would be trading Spencer Jones. Would you really want to trade Spencer Jones PLUS a guy to get Jack Flaherty? No, right?
The Padres gave up a haul for Tanner Scott, which AJ Preller likes to do. No other big names went. Pete Fairbanks wasn’t traded, Yandy Diaz wasn’t traded, the difference-making guys weren’t traded, which means that NO team was willing to meet whatever crazy ass price Tampa Bay was asking for. That’s fair enough to me. If Houston got Yandy, I’d be pissed. If NO one got Yandy, I’m fine.
Jazz Chisholm and the relievers is fine by me. The Yankees are an improved team now than they were a week ago.
Yeah it’s probably fine. It would have been nice to get a reliably good reliever though.
It’s too bad the Yankees couldn’t find a taker for Verdugo (or Nestor) though.
Agreed, but the reliably good relievers got HAULS. The Phillies gave up some legit prospects to get Estevez, for instance, and Preller emptied whatever good prospects he had left to get Scott (FOUR of their top guys for Scott and the other reliever).
The other guys who got dealt were meh. Luis Garcia? Soto? The dude on Oakland? Nothing of note.
Fangraphs top 100
25 Spencer Jones former two-way player, here Jones is projected to develop in center field and shorten up his swing to get to his enormous power. He might also be a top five prospect a year from now.
30 Martian
65 Will Warren
67 Chase Hampton
Yeah, see, if you were looking for an impact hitter in the Top 100 like Liranzo, the Yankees didn’t HAVE one other than guys they weren’t going to trade for Flaherty.
As for this game, whatever, you couldn’t expect Warren to NOT suck tonight, so I’m fine with it. I just want Cole to be okay.
Earlier Girardi said Warren had a 15.88 era in May but he’s been better since. One would hope so.
Yankees had some decent ABs without much in the way of results.
Jazz A home run and missed a double by an inch.
Is Jazz Chisholm the only hitter Rowson knows how to help?
An interesting thing is that the Yankees can finally pinch hit for Grisham in games where Judge DHs, as Chisholm can move to center and Waldo can come in to play third.
Jazz is our Mookie.
Let’s see if the Yankees can actually get a hit with RISP.
HA!
BTW Warren looked pretty good against a tough lineup.
Yeah, all said, he was actually quite good. Impressive outing for his Major League debut. I was at Phil Hughes’ debut, and he got tagged for, like, six runs by a worse Toronto team than this Philly club, which has the best record in baseball.
His second outing OTOH gave me high hopes.
Except for the injury part.
I love it when the other team brings in a reliever who’s been getting crushed to kill a rally. Remember Diekman who had been the worst reliever in like all of July.
Spencer Jones makes an opposite field HR look like child’s play.

EVEN BOONE WOULDNT HAVE PINCH HIT STANTON FOR WELLS HERE!
Wells having a crappy game.
Terrible night for Wells. Sometimes you have bad games, oh well.
Un-Yankees-like, he avoided the inevitable ground ball DP several times.
ALL THAT JAZZ!!
John McEnroe “You can’t be serious!”
Doesn’t this guy know you’re supposed to suck when you get traded to the Yankees?
DAVE BRUBECK SEZ TAKE FIVE
Who said Jazz can’t be middle of the order?
Had I known that his Rowson reunion was going to change him into 1989-90 Ryne Sandberg, I would have felt differently!
Chisholm Trail.
DJ just gotta get in the game.
LeMahieu in for defense again in the SEVENTH FUCKING INNING.
Rice just hit, that spot isn’t due up until the ninth. Of course, he’ll get up with the bases loaded in the eight instead.
OTOH
OTOH
Michael Kay paraphrasing Teri Hatcher. Well done.
Nice. Born to play 3b.
Kahnle was, like, “It’s not going to be ME who blows it tonight, boys.”
That is a good-old-fashioned ballplayer. He can do whatever you ask. Like the kid in little league, pitch 2 innings, play shortstop for two and then left field when the other team’s best player come up.
Baseball fans are so spoiled. I was checking Twitter, and it’s all Philly fans complaining about their offense. They have the best record in the Major Leagues, and they’re just bitching about their offense.
Maybe, but they don’t have the best Pythag. And we all know what really matters here.
Deja Vu playing 3B for the Yankees #13 ………….
Hoch Aaron Boone said that with Jazz Chisholm Jr. at third base, the Yankees may have some “growing pains” they have to live with.
Uh, ya think? Third is far different from the middle infield.
Weaver said, “Okay, Clay, it’ll have to be you to blow the game.”
And now for the hard part.
“Okay, okay, you’ve all had your fun, now the sucking begins.”
I just love the sheer arrogance of it all. “Yeah, Holmes can’t be trusted, but we’re going to trust him anyways, fuck you.”
Clay going for 8 to take the blown save lead.
It’s particularly maddening when the other good relievers all did their jobs, ya know?
Not his fault, but that’s the shit you get when your closer can’t strike anyone out. The soft contact sometimes goes for hits.
That was a better example. The other was just unlucky.
It was definitely unlucky, but when you constantly give up contact, you’re going to get some bad luck.
That was ridiculously unlucky
Can they PLEASE just stop letting this guy be the closer? He can still pitch! It’s not like I want them to DFA him. Just stop letting him close games! He’s not good at it!
Ab-fucking-surd.
Thank GOD DJ LeMahieu will get to bat in the 10th.
Gleyber involved in a tricky play with lousy fielding during a blown save situation and he … STOPS it from happening? What’s going on here?
What a play by Marsh! Fuck.
What a shocker. Hey, Boone, how about NOT FUCKING DOING THAT ANYMORE, YOU FUCKING IDIOT?
Just get Boone out of here. But Cashman probably thought it is a genius move on Boone’s part.
Two hits in four at-bats. Hm, were there runners on base for those two hits? Hmmmm….I wonder….
He hit that real good. The problem was DJ.
Yeah, he DID hit it hard. Fucking DJ for Rice, still kills me.
Best Yankee trades ever
Ruth for $
Sparky Lyle for Danny Cater
Jazz Chisholm for whoever
Worst Yankee closer ever
Clay Holmes
Worst Yankee manager ever
Aaron Boone
Great job by Leiter. So everyone did their jobs but Holmes. Where have I heard THAT before?
DFA LeMahieu.
He’s fine to be on the roster, Boone has to just be told not to constantly to bring him in for defense for Rice in close games.
Verdugo getting it done with the sac fly.
That was nice to see.
Wells gets another shot.
You could really redeem yourself here, Wells.
What an UGLY game for Wells. Nine (9!) LOB.
It really has been BRUTAL. Just non-competitive at-bat after non-competitive at-bat. He probably needs a day off. They’ve really been riding him pretty hard (understandably so, but still).
Exciting! Can’t wait to find out how many pitches it takes before the walkoff 2-run bomb. Total is set at 4.5. I’ll take the under.
holmes sucks but any other 2b would have made that play competitive. gleyber is the worst and im tired of pretending that he’s not.
Holy shit, enough with the fucking wild pitches, you assholes!
Why in the world wouldn’t you use Tim Hill with Schwarber due up?
If you can’t control your pitches, you shouldn’t be out there!
Okay, I guess he wasn’t AWFUL. He’s definitely falling down the totem pole in the bullpen hieararchy, though!
Thankfully DJ gets another at-bat.
Let’s see if the double oh-fers can get the run in (I bet they can’t).
Gleyber, we need a hit.
True Yankee baserunning by Jazz.
Wait, is Waldo going to play first in the bottom of the inning?!
Has Waldo PLAYED first base in the Majors before?
Oh, FFS. Sure, they got a run, but TJPSOB strikes again.
A SECOND inning from Tonkin!? Boone is certifiable.
With no on one it was Boone lunacy to pinch hit Stanton, considering the layoff, for even DJ.
Yeah, that seemed to be a very low upside move.
You know Michael Tonkin’s #1 fan is happy tonight.
Tonkin, awesome! Yay, win. Four in a row for the first time since early June.
Hard luck loss for Kerkering, who was quite good in his one inning.
