  1. As for the trade deadline, they needed to add two relievers, they added two relievers. We’ll see if Leiter is as good as his FIP here. If so, he’ll be a great pickup. The other guy is less important, but hey, we’ve seen seemingly minor relief pitcher acquisitions flourish here recently, so maybe he’ll be good, as well. He has a track record.

Beyond that, Jack Flaherty was one of only two big names traded, and was anyone really interested in trading a haul for Jack Flaherty? The Dodgers gave up a legit prospect in Thayron Liranzo to get him. The Yankees didn’t really have anyone LIKE Thayron Liranzo in their system. The closest would be trading Spencer Jones. Would you really want to trade Spencer Jones PLUS a guy to get Jack Flaherty? No, right?

The Padres gave up a haul for Tanner Scott, which AJ Preller likes to do. No other big names went. Pete Fairbanks wasn’t traded, Yandy Diaz wasn’t traded, the difference-making guys weren’t traded, which means that NO team was willing to meet whatever crazy ass price Tampa Bay was asking for. That’s fair enough to me. If Houston got Yandy, I’d be pissed. If NO one got Yandy, I’m fine.

Jazz Chisholm and the relievers is fine by me. The Yankees are an improved team now than they were a week ago.

    1. Yeah it’s probably fine. It would have been nice to get a reliably good reliever though.

It’s too bad the Yankees couldn’t find a taker for Verdugo (or Nestor) though.

    2. Agreed, but the reliably good relievers got HAULS. The Phillies gave up some legit prospects to get Estevez, for instance, and Preller emptied whatever good prospects he had left to get Scott (FOUR of their top guys for Scott and the other reliever).

The other guys who got dealt were meh. Luis Garcia? Soto? The dude on Oakland? Nothing of note.

  2. Fangraphs top 100

25 Spencer Jones former two-way player, here Jones is projected to develop in center field and shorten up his swing to get to his enormous power. He might also be a top five prospect a year from now.

    1. Yeah, see, if you were looking for an impact hitter in the Top 100 like Liranzo, the Yankees didn’t HAVE one other than guys they weren’t going to trade for Flaherty.

    1. Yeah, all said, he was actually quite good. Impressive outing for his Major League debut. I was at Phil Hughes’ debut, and he got tagged for, like, six runs by a worse Toronto team than this Philly club, which has the best record in baseball.

  3. I love it when the other team brings in a reliever who’s been getting crushed to kill a rally. Remember Diekman who had been the worst reliever in like all of July.

    1. Rice just hit, that spot isn’t due up until the ninth. Of course, he’ll get up with the bases loaded in the eight instead.

    1. That is a good-old-fashioned ballplayer. He can do whatever you ask. Like the kid in little league, pitch 2 innings, play shortstop for two and then left field when the other team’s best player come up.

  4. Baseball fans are so spoiled. I was checking Twitter, and it’s all Philly fans complaining about their offense. They have the best record in the Major Leagues, and they’re just bitching about their offense.

    1. Maybe, but they don’t have the best Pythag. And we all know what really matters here.

  5. Hoch Aaron Boone said that with Jazz Chisholm Jr. at third base, the Yankees may have some “growing pains” they have to live with.

  6. Gleyber involved in a tricky play with lousy fielding during a blown save situation and he … STOPS it from happening? What’s going on here?

    1. Just get Boone out of here. But Cashman probably thought it is a genius move on Boone’s part.

  7. Best Yankee trades ever
    Ruth for $
    Sparky Lyle for Danny Cater
    Jazz Chisholm for whoever

    Worst Yankee closer ever
    Clay Holmes

    Worst Yankee manager ever
    Aaron Boone

    1. It really has been BRUTAL. Just non-competitive at-bat after non-competitive at-bat. He probably needs a day off. They’ve really been riding him pretty hard (understandably so, but still).
