What a weird ass lineup for the Yankees. Goldy leading off is fascinating, and I hate that the Martian is DHing instead of Judge. I would have liked to have seen Waldo get a start against a lefty, but as bebop notes, Reyes DOES have good numbers against lefties. Nestor seems like the perfect guy to dominate the Yankees, let’s hope it doesn’t happen. I’m really looking forward to seeing Fried in action.
Once more unto the breach, dear friends, once more;
Or close the wall up with our Yankee injured list.
I didn’t love how hard that last pitch was hit, but overall, good first inning by Fried.
That is hilarious.
Oh my god, Nestor, throw a fucking ball!
You never know what first you might see in any game you watch. First time the Yankees ever led off a game with three home runs.
Still on pace for 162 home runs!
This is a fun inning but it makes me sad to see Nestor treated like this
100%.
Eh, in 2018 he had no career. Since then he’s earned $15 Million. Life’s been good to him since.
True, but I still feel bad for him today!
I can still root for him, bop
I hope Bronxie didn’t have to watch that.
I picked a bad time to take a shower.
Hurt by soft contact AGAIN.
Nice Nestor.
The ump really dicked Fried over in that at-bat.
Not a good inning for Fried.
What a dumb throw by Volpe.
Well, it doesn’t matter, as that single would have driven in the run. Fried is having a terrible inning.
Fried rushed his throw for NO REASON. A three-time Gold Glover who has decided to forget how to field as soon as he became a Yankee.
In the long run, I’m obviously not worried about Fried, as there was so much soft contact that just went horribly wrong, but, at the same time, WHAT THE FUCK!?
Another four home runs and we’re back in this, Brian.
So this guy is the new co-ace, huh
This guy is the new Colace.
162 home run pace for Volpe, too!
Curse of Javy Vasquez and Sonny Gray?
TPAV
What’s a good way to listen to the game either radio or internet?
I subscribe to MLB audio, gets me radio broadcasts for every game, though it’s like $30/year.
Chicken Parm!
That’s right
I thought corked bats were illegal.
Are there data on pitchers facing their former team? I can’t readily find any, but I would imagine there’s something to the Brewers giving Williams a hard time the other day, and to the Yankees giving Nestor trouble today.
They are beating this team like a redheaded stepchild
I like this offense.
I like runs.
Brian’s worries about the lineup today were greatly exaggerated.
I like even more runs.
I liked the Belli flop into first base. It’s not even April and folks are trying to extend rallies with a four run lead.
I also like that they’re continuing to hit against Thomas. Hopefully helps Nestor feel less alone.
They are beating this team like a rented mule
Wow, this team is on a pace to hit about 2000 home runs. Even if we fall off a bit I think if we can stay up to 1500 we should be able to crush the Dodgers.
The Yankees are gonna need every one of those runs at this rate
Reyes hasn’t looked good out there.
Can he pitch?
… apparently not. He has a career total of 4IP with 5 BB’s and 4 hits, for a WHIP of 2.25 and a FIP of 6.95.
What’s with these guys?
Soft contact is their Kryptonite.
Time for more runs.
Great play by Jazz!
Oh, okay.
What did Jazz do? I’m just checking GD
Good thing we upgraded our D.
It’s crazy how dumb some of these plays have been, too!
This ump is pretty generous at the bottom of the zome, Dominguez got rung up on ball 6
The Martian’s eye today has been great.
It’s like little league, the strike zone expands to move the game along faster.
I’m out of metaphors to describe how badly the Yankees are beating the Brewers
Like a red-headed mule?
intriguing
I like even more even more runs.
I think this new Right Fielder might work out
No one has ever hit five home runs in a single game.
Judge now on pace for 243 homers. And he only needs 70 more for a share of the record.
More seriously, it’s great to see him swinging the bat well this early in the year.
It’s CRAZY to think what he would look like if he ever avoided a month-long slump like he often gets into.
It’s just too bad the Yankees didn’t have a catcher leading off to hit one of these 8 dingers.
You’re like the song in Hamilton called “Satisfied” because you’ll never be satisfied
I can’t get no.
Both Cortes and Thomas have 36.00 ERAs
Wow, Reyes has NOT been great out there.
This is really, it’s a, it’s a terrible start for Fried
I mean, whatever, shit happens, but ooph, the defense today has been brutal.
Benny Hill-ass game.
I thought Reyes was supposed to be all glove
Chackson Jourio
FOUR unearned runs for Fried today!
I take back my aspersions on Fried
Fried started last season really poorly (18.00 ERA through two games, 7.71 ERA through four), as well, and still ended up having a great season.
Andujar, Mariano Duncan and Hector Lopez were all better hitters than Reyes
Codify Baseball no pitcher in mlb history had ever given up 5 home runs and walked 5 batters in a game without facing at least 35 batters
nestor cortes today did it while facing only 17 batters
Hopefully they leave Peguero in another inning, so the Weekly World News can print a photo of Elvis and the Martian.
Judge not hitting a home run? washed
If Belli walks here, then Judge would bat with a chance to hit for a home run cycle.
I don’t think that’s ever been done
Oh well. I guess we’ll have to settle for runs.
boo RBI single
Hasn’t happened in MLB, though google’s AI will lie to you that Chandler Redmond did it with the St Louis Cardinals in 2022. Unfortunately he was with the AA Springfield Cardinals, and he has never made it to the major leagues.
Okay, 18 runs, 3 Judge HRs and 8 RBIs as I write this. But, complaint time. Five errors as I write this, Fried couldn’t even give them 5-innings.
We don’t need no stinkin’ starting pitchers.
Boo RBI double
It’s the first time in MLB history that a pitcher has given up three home runs on the first three pitches of the game.
It’s also the first time in MLB that a pitcher has given up 5 home runs and 5 walks without facing at least 35 hitters. Cortes faced 17.
Headrick looks great.
Peraza!
And that’s why you start Peraza
Man, if he could hit at ALL, it’d be awesome.
I dunno, I’m fine with 81 HR in limited duty. Would be enough for RoY if he were still eligible, so he’ll have to settle for 3rd place in the MVP voting behind Judge (243 HR) and Volpe’s mom (324 HR).
It’s nice of them to think of the Pythag.
Boone better not PH for Judge
No way.
Hilariously, the second game of the season in 1997 saw Tino with three home runs, a solo shot, a two-run shot, and a three-run shot. He was batting fourth in the ninth inning, and somehow, all three guys ahead of him reached, so he had a chance for the home run cycle! But he took the walk.
Then, somehow, they batted around, and he came up AGAIN with the bases loaded, but struck out to end the game.
I remember that game
That was an all time season before Armando Benitez broke him.
Remember that. What game, what a season!
And I still can’t believe (or bear the fact that) they actually then acquired Benitez.
I thought Carrasco was in the rotation
Due to off days, they don’t need a fifth starter for a while.
Oh of course. Thanks.
This is gonna be a tough loss
Cookie was obviously just trying to get through the innings, so I won’t take too much from this outing.
I mean, nine runs is a pretty bad day actually
Goldschmidt’s home run was the first home run by a Yankee first baseman since JULY.
Just got in.
Holy cannole!
Sic, I think you wanted the other way around – beat them like a rented red-head 😉
Eight players OPSing over 1.000.
Six OPSing at least 1.300.
Four OPSing at least 1.500.
First I’m hearing of the new bat shape. Pretty neat. Looks like Belli, Volpe, and Jazz all used the new bats today. (Judge, Goldy, and Wells don’t need them.)
Looking back at the video, actually, seems like Wells’s HR was with the new bat, and I’m less sure about Belli – he might have been using an old-style bat. Likewise not sure about Peraza.
Watched the condensed game.
Even with the unearned runs, really bad game for Fried.
And defensively for Volpe, a bit shocking, really.
That’s the spirit!
We do what we can to keep the flag waving!
The bats are alright

Codify Baseball
Rafael Devers is the first player in MLB history to strike out 10 times in the first 3 games of a season.
Only twice before (Wally Post in 1956 and Greg Luzinski in 1974) had a player struck out 9 times in the first 3 games.
He’s their DH, but he’s hitting like a pitcher.
(The specific pitcher he’s hitting like is Joey Gallo.)
The day started with excitement and hope.
It ended with Max Scherzer saying things like “imminent danger” and “recipe for disaster”.

Volpe needs all the help he can get, the ‘new’ bat, but when they adjust will he?
Especially when everyone else starts using that bat, putting any bat-based improvement in context.
