  1. Arraez to the Phillies. Once the Yankees got Garcia, Arraez obviously wasn’t going to happen, but hey, at least he didn’t get traded to Tampa Bay.

    By the way, Freddy Peralta has been awful this season, so I can’t be too worried about him on Tampa Bay.

    1. Last years deadline pickups – well one has been really good the other two are gone. So far the combined WAR for the 3 pickups is (-1.1 for Doval, -0.9 for bird, + 2.1 for Bednar) is about zero (ok it’s a total of +0.1). So unless the guys they gave up amount to
      nothing, last years deadline gets a D. Maybe higher because Bednar has been nails when they’ve needed his recently.
      And this is the GM we think is going to help the team at this years deadline. Why?

    Why? Garcia’s not going to play 2nd base. He was abysmal there.
    They still need a 2B/SS/3B. And a reliever. And they SAID they wanted an outfielder. And a catcher.
    Anyway, moot now re: Arraez.

      It’s also BONKERS that a rental of Arraez cost more than Garcia with an extra year of control. I’m sure Cashman noped right out of that negotiation.

    3. Didn’t Jazz play a good 3B when he came here? I recall thinking so. Why would he suddenly be unable to do so? (He’s just erratic as a human being, I don’t think he’d be any more erratic at 3B than 2B.) He has the athleticism and the experience, I just don’t get why this is even a question.

  3. Does phenom have any trade value? A bottom four in the lineup of some combo of phenom, Jazz, Cabby, MacMahon, Rosario plus a catcher is a giant black hole. Neither Jasson or Schumann scare anybody either.

      If you don’t remember, Lombard Jr. started his 2026 campaign with a 5-hit effort for Somerset. He owns a .268/.405/.440 triple slash at this level, and the temptation must be rising.

      But since June those number are much higher.June 306/977- july 378/1147 (inflated by a few rehab games in the rookie league.

    3. I really think Wells is dealing with the aftereffects of his weird injury, probably concussion like in the slowness of his recovery. Think Rizzo. I think Wells is likely to get back to where he was, probably next year – and where he was didn’t seem like his ceiling, either.
      Phenom’s been consistently bad over years. Wells looked promising and at his worst (before this season) good enough for a catcher and then plummeted so precipitiously it’s only logical to think there’s an independent cause.

    4. as much as i would like cabby starting at ss it seems like volpe’s problems are from a lack of approach at the plate. i can put up with the arm and errors if he could hit more.

      there is no reason that 4 years in he should still be hitting to a 82ops and his power has seemingly evaporated.

      instead of running him out, send him to driveline or aaa,
      he just never got the seasoning. at this point though i don’t care if he gets it in another uniform, the lack of progress has just been exhausting.

    5. I agree Wells may be impacted by injuries, but I am worried that he won’t actually be able to get better. If he’s underperforming because he’s still having cervicogenic headaches, then that wouldn’t bode well for them stopping anytime soon, and they could be developing into a chronic (potentially lifelong) thing. I feel bad for him and hope he is already feeling better, because chronic pain is awful.

  4. I really like the Garcia signing, but I really hope that’s not all that happens. (At the same time, Lombard and Spencer better not get dealt for anything less than a major upgrade.)

  5. I hear that Cashman is still looking for an outfield bat, and is in talks to send Lombard and ERC to the Washington Senators in return for Shoeless Joe Hardy from Hannibal, MO.

  6. If the Yankees HAD gotten Skubal, would that immediately have made this the finest startation rotation in baseball history? It think it might.
    Hell, with that rotation and this offense, they might win fully half of their games!

  10. Cashmans an old man. He just woke up after a hard day yesterday. Give him some time to shower, put his teeth in, and have a cup of tea and he’ll be ready to go and get us some good players!

    • Added INF Luis García Jr. (#26) to the active roster.
    • Recalled RHP Kervin Castro (#74) from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
    • Optioned INF/OF Max Schuemann to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

  18. Yankees have upgraded their offense against RHPs. Unless something happens soon catching is a black hole offensively; middle infield/3b consists of mediocre 8/9 hitters; with Spence getting a TBD rating Jasson and Grisham are 4th outfielders.

  20. 2020 no deal. 2021 Rizzo, Gallo, Holmes, Heaney. 2022 CF in a boot, Montas, Trivino, Benintendi.2023 Kenyon Middleton (who?). 2024 Jazz, Leiter, De Los Santos. 2025 MacMahon, Bednar, Doval.

    1. Headlined by the #49 prospect overall. Elmer is #73.

      Basically, the Yankees didn’t love his medicals and said, “This is our best offer” and the Red Sox slightly beat it.

  22. At least two good catchers were acquired. Middle infielders… Not sure what the count is for relievers we might have wanted, didn’t see anything that impressed me, which is odd, because relievers usually move at the deadline.
    UPD actually I see there were a number of pretty good options moved.
    But it’s hard to say that stuff wasn’t available that the Yankees could have used. The Sawx got Rutschman AFTER already trading Early (whose work on Firefly I appreciated) for Mead who immediately went down. Did they give up more than the Yankees could possibly have matched?

    1. The Red Sox definitely gave up a ton for Rutschman.

      Hicks, though, I doubt the Yankees even wanted. Lefty poor defensive catcher whose offense looks fluky.

    2. Mediocre or worse 1,5,6,7,8,9. Spence still TBD. And even worse against LHPs. Sure if all the starters go 6+ giving up only 1 run we might be OK

  27. Yankees apparently interested outfielder Heliot Ramos, who had a good 2024 and since has gotten progressively worse, and and that’s not even counting some BABIP luck.
    And they don’t have to trade him, as he’s under team control until 2029, so they can ask a lot for their questionable goods.
    Somewhat better against lefties, FWIW.

    1. Meh. Too much platooning, too few people you can’t just turn around so they suck.

    2. Concur with Pete yet again. Platoons are two bodies to make one decent MLB player. The Yankees want a roster full of spare parts.

    Everyone seems to have improved much more so than the Yankees, no?

    1. I didn’t see the whole offer at the time. The Red Sox gave up a TON. I doubt the offers were even close they gave up so much.

      Their 2nd, 4th, 5th prospect AND a player to be named later (and Narvaez).

  52. Listen, not even the Dodgers are likely to out-pitch the Yankees in the playoffs.
    If they get the big hitters back – and don’t lose pitchers, of course – they could be anybody. Even with their unpreparedness. Even with Boone managing.
    Those are big “if”s, though, and they could have been so much better.

  53. I just saw Ramos play in SF, he was a hilariously bad fielder (broke the wrong direction on EVERY flyball), but he is a decent hitter. The Yankees OF defense will be rough for a while though, especially since Bellinger looks like the CF next year.

    Pretty sure Garcia + Ramos indicate the Yankees have no faith in Stanton returning.

    Still plenty of time for deals to come through.

    1. idk ali actually hit the last week. everyone makes mistakes. i’d rather send wells down and roll with escarra (tearing the cover off the ball in aaa for a month) and sanchez.

      if wells has been rizzo’d we will never see the guy we thought he’d become.

    1. no movement on C is very annoying, their catching corps has been so bad for so long at this point.

    3. Honestly, lots of other teams managed to get their deals done. Some people are great negotiators, others aren’t. You have to be able to do that. Maybe Cashman just can’t talk to people and convince them of things anymore.
      I mean, if they went that far not to sell to the Yankees, the Yankees probably didn’t handle it very well.
      After all the Red Sox got their catcher FROM A DIVISION RIVAL!

    5. But that’s the point. There are two parties in any negotiations. If they were willing to do something that dumb to spite the Yankees, Cashman must suck as a negotiation partner. How badly do you have to handle it for the other side to react that way?
      That’s what bad negotiating IS!

    1. I see what you did there; but this was in San Francisco, where there’s famously no sun from June through August.

      (Not true, actually. The ballpark is on the sunny side of town. Not to be confused with the Sunnyside neighborhood and the Sunset District, which are usually completely enveloped in fog this time of year.)

      Thanks to the hilly terrain, the Sunnyside’s up and the Sunnyside’s down, all at once. It’s sort of in a quantum state of resonance until your egg is observed.

      But if you want the San Francisco-based spoof of “New York, New York” to be more subtly allusive to New York, then you might say, “The Sunnyside’s up and the Excelsior’s down.”

    3. The trade will take a while to complete, since Kent is being sent to San Francisco on his dad’s motorcycle, while Ramos is being sent on Harrison Bader’s scooter.

  64. Heliot move might be good if it meant we had a shot at a championship. I don’t think so. I think I’d rather hold on to Lalane as a lottery pick.

    1. The one area where I think we should trust these guys is on which young pitcher to deal. They likely felt Lalane was bound to get hurt again. He wasn’t coming up this year, so holding him was a big risk, especially as he would need to be added to the 40-man this offseason.

  65. I wonder if Eacarra tearing up AAA influenced their thinking. You know, like, “We are only interested in clear starters like Rutschman or Jeffers.”

    Just call up Escarra. He’s actually a GOOD defensive catcher who won’t make the idiotic decisions Sanchez makes, and maybe he’s figured something out offensively. Dude has a 1.000 OPS in the minors!

  69. As terrible as this trade deadline was, I don’t love the Red Sox or Rays moves that much either.

    If the Red Six had gotten, say, Zach Neto, I’d be really pissed. Instead, they got a hurt Rutschman who hasn’t even hit since April. Freddy Peralta has been actively BAD this season, and while Hicks makes more sense for the Rays than the yankees, he remains a bad defensive catcher with fluky offense.

    1. I’ll say this: on a sheer talent for talent, value for value basis (disregarding priority needs and roster space), I really like the first trade.

    2. The Sox made at least 2 other deals. Just got a really interesting reliever in Erik Miller.
      And Rutschman is a genuinely good player at a position of need, even if he’s hurt now.

    3. He’s a good player, to be sure, but will he stay healthy? This is his third stint on the IL just this season, and they gave up a TON for him.

      Neto would have been a transformational hitter to their lineup. Rutschman just helps them.

    1. i like austin wells but the yankees don’t owe him a starting job. he has to get healthy, better, or both. the people calling him names are outrageous, he’s a cool guy with a sense of humor that clobbered a few memorable baseballs. it just would have been nice if he could have built on his 2024. if it can’t happen gotta move on. he still has a future of signing baseballs, old timers games, and he’s made more money already than 99.9% of this planet ever will even if it was at league minimum.

    1. That was pretty much what I meant about Wells and Rutschman, but Brian has a point.
