The Yankees have suffered some shocking losses to the Cleveland baseball team over the years. A lot of the times, they responded to those awful losses with great wins. At least once (the midgies game) they did not. We shall see which one will happen tonight.
Batting Jazz cleanup is certainly A choice.
It’s amazing to see a team, the Mets today, get hits w/RISP. Yankees, WOEful.
I don’t expect that but why do they have to be the stone cold worst team in the playoffs with RISP, 150 443
Tie game. 8th inning,2 out, Wells 0/3, 2 on, does Boone pinch hit for Wells? No-he’s due.
100% he lets Wells hit.
The problem is, that leaves Trevino at catcher and his inability to throw runners out. They should’ve had another guy on the roster, not Trevino, one who they can’t steal blind on. I don’t care who, just anyone who can actually throw a runner out.
Yeah 99.9%. And Ex I agree, Narvaez who is a good defensive catcher should be here over Trevi. That said in my hypothetical you have to hit for Wells IMO.
Mets pitching faltering.
Robert giving a new meaning to punting a playoff game.
Meredith: Boone said Wells is just missing. Huh? He didn’t want to bat Rizzo 4th in case he has to pull him because of his hand. Huh? They could always use Jasson to hit and then put Waldo or Berti in.
Just missing? He is swinging and missing fat pitches. This post season roster construction is unserious.
What if Weaver is just not that good? He’s a 30 year old who had eras over 6 in 2022 and 2023. Maybe he just went on a roll and in his own words he’s gotten away with a few mistakes. Holmes went from unhittable to unbearable and Holmes has for sure big time stuff. I don’t know.I hope he’s for real.
Odds are, yeah, he got on a roll, like Holmes once did.
What’s the excuse when Gavin Williams and his 84 era+ dominates?
Mets going to Diaz for six outs.
Getting quality and length from gil is vital
That’ll do.
Soto!
Keep gleyber and Soto
He barrelled that as much as I’ve ever seen.
Mr. Soto!
Whew I was afraid of 2 on, no out. Yeah the home run was nice also.
That homer was so huge in that it shut the fucking announcers up, ya know?
Jazz takes the dumbest huge cuts.
It is who he has been.
Jazz great Yankee cleanup hitter, or the greatest?
Mets punch their ticket back to LA.
That won’t do.
Throw strikes.
Leadoff walk. So fucking annoying.
How predictable was that?
Great, wild gil
They might as well have started Marcus fucking Stroman.
When is the last time Rizzi made a play at 1st?
I think the hand affected his vertical leap.
The question is would the Yankees have been better starting Stroman? Gil gives them much more upside but also more downside.
I think you go with gil, because if the upside and you find out if he’s usable at all. So far… Not bad after a rough start.
A smart team would have Stroman ready to go if Gil falls apart, so the Yankees are obviously all-in on Gil.
100%. Also, can you really compare their 2024 seasons?
Jeez, just adjust already!
Nice last strike.
Yankee scoring complete.
They’re taking too many pitches.
Finally!
That was weird.
Thank you for not taking that, Wells.
Hells Bells, Wells!
See, that’s why Boone kept him in the line up flailing at nothing for 2 full months!
Now he’ll know he was right all along (because of one home run)(okay, because of what I’d like to be him finally actually coming out of it, but still)
What the announcers said essentially was that THEY believe there’s such a thing as a “high run-scoring environment.”
THEY’RE making Gil throw strikes?
I’D like to make Gil throw strikes!
This is Gil to a tee. Great pitches for two outs, and then a mind-numbing walk of the shitty catcher in the #8 spot.
That was a strike
Two innings, 38 pitches.
That was because of the first two batters. 38 isn’t great, but not deadly. One good inning and he’s back around where he should be.
The biggest thing for Gil are those non-competitive high fastballs. Bring those down to where people swing and he’d be unhittable.
But that was a strike?
Would Gleyber be on first if he’d busted it?
I don’t think so.
This is shitty managing. There’s a game tomorrow night!
Vogt has had a hair trigger on the BP all playoffs. They do have a solid pen, but it’s been pretty extreme
I don’t know. His pen is very deep. He wants to keep it close.
That was shitty hitting.
That was an embarrassing at-bat by Judge. He’s obviously awesome, and that homer last night was amazing, but it’s still weird how many embarrassing at-bats he has.
When Kwan gets a hit, whatever, but when he gets these stupid fucking groundballs to nowhere, that pisses me off. He gets so many groundballs that are JUST in the right spot.
Even if volpe got that, I don’t think he gets kwan. Would have been an fantastic pay if he had though
Oh, 100% he wouldn’t have gotten Kwan.
What a meaningless mishmash of contradictory cliches from Boone
Important to turn the page, just another game, matters, doesn’t matter.
Ramirez hits some of the great pop-ups in the game today, you know.
What the fuck was THAT, Wells?!
On Kwan’s hit, it hit the lip of the grass, which is really like a curb here. Helped us recently. Weird.
GODDAMIT, just like fucking 2022 with those fucking shitty dinks.
Can’t do anything about that. But they could have TRIED to hold kwan at 1b
That sucks. They really need a rule.
Or just a sensor at the front of the plate.
Gil, just as expected. A million dollar are, a 10¢ head.
Whew. Seventy excruciating pitches in 3-innings.
Nice last pitch. But a bunch of ridiculous balls and now the pitch count really is bad.
He’s just SO FUCKING stupid. So talented, but SO STUPID.
Great cleanup hitter or greatest?
The idea of him not batting Rizzo cleanup because of his HAND is so fucking stupid, while Jazz just swings wildly at every other pitch.
When’s the last time Volpe hit a HR?
Last year?
Cleveland got this guy out of their system. Yankee system is bare, at least at AA and AAA.
This is not going to be a 3-2 game and we’re not going to hold them at 3 and maybe we’ll get a solo home run.
He WALKED Hedges the last time he was up, why the fuck would Hedges be BUNTING?!
A clean and easy inning, much needed.
Thanks for that gimme second out, Hedges, you moron!
How can you swing at that pitch, Wells? Twice at balls high out of the zone.
Great question.
A shitty groundball to second base, Verdugo has revolutionized the art of hitting!
What did Verdugo swing at? That wasn’t close.
Is the ump calling balls strikes for us also?
They’re not going to score again, at least until they’re behind by 5 or 6.
One single since the Wells home run.
Just a lot of terrible hitters on this team.
I would so bet Cleveland from here.
I get not wanting Gil to face Kwan again, but that means having to get FIVE innings from their motley bullpen. Leiter Jr. probably event gets an inning at this point!
Yeah, don’t love it.
Soto made that look much more difficult than it was.
I hate how inconsistent the ump’s zone has been.
The plate work this series has been pretty bad
ODDLY so, right? These are supposedly the better umps, and each one of them has been annoying!
Pinch hitters? Is that allowed? A bench that might help? Is that allowed? We have Berti, Waldo and Trent on the bench.
These motherfucking shitty groundballs that go for hits. So fucking frustrating. HE IS GOING TO BE RUNNING, WELLS. KNOW THAT.
That was a great strikeout by Hill. I guess you let him pitch the 6th, right?
I’m happy to see Vogt burn Smith in the 6th with the Yankees leading.
Jazz is the A lane? Which name does not belong-Soto, Judge, Jazz, Stanton?
hey. has anyone mentioned how dumb “Jazz Chisolm, cleanup hitter” is?
You gotta walk Stanton, right?
At least Jazz is an actually really good bunter!
Stop swinging at pitches high out of the zone.
Okay, that’s better, you Big Lug.
Fascinating to see Smith go after Stanton. He’ll probably K him, but seems like asking a lot, when he could easily just K Rizzo and Volpe.
Always good to surrender an out in the 6th.
lol. even Sterls was like “why are they bunting? the obvious move is to walk Stanton”
Playoff. Stanton.
Boom!
!!!
Boone stupidity is contagious. Not walking Stanton?
Indeed.
SOME ITALIAN GIBBERISH IN A STERLING VOICE!!
“Italian Gibberish” was my nickname in high school.
Cade Smith has me singing God Bless America.
He coulda stood wit Hill.
I 100% would have. They need FOUR more innings. Cousins is good for one, but what about the other three?
Guess.
Cousins can go 2.
Bo Naylor is MUCH better than Hedges, but wouldn’t you be better off using Noel here, and then doing a double switch to keep Noel in the game?
WHY ARE YOU PITCHING AROUND BO NAYLOR WITH TWO OUTS?!
Let’s blow this here
This ump’s zone is ALL over the place.
Languid against the mediocre starters, but Classe and Smith they hit.
I’m worried the Dodgers’ pitching just won’t be good enough for the Yankees to hit.
HOW DID GLEYBER NOT BEAT THAT OUT?!
Volpe doesn’t make that play.
Sure, walk the leadoff batter.
What a fucking frustrating start to the inning by Cousins. Geez louise, dude!
Really.
Naylor bailed Cousins out. Radicchio did not.
I like it when Stanton gets on one of his heaters at the right time.
Oh great, bring in Holmes to face the guy who he JUST gave up a home run to!
I legit would prefer Tim Mayza here, that’s how much I hate this decision.
Hill for two was the move instead of trying to get two innings out of Cousins, who isn’t used to pitching multiple innings.
Well, Holmes lost one game this series, let’s see if he can lose another.
Tomorrow is going to be a blood bath is either starter can’t go 5+
Strikes, maybe?
Is Rizzo just cooked?
Yes
Been saying it.
Fuck
Dammit. He had him 0-2 and then Holmes just made that happen.
It would be nice if Rizzo could field
Odd that his hitting’s come around, but his fielding – he can’t react to a fast play.
Just keep sticking with Holmes, he’ll figure it out eventually!
This is ungood
Anyone getting ready?
It’s all on Boone. We knew Holmes sucks.
Once Hamilton got hurt, though, it was tough. Leiter and Mayza suck, too. If they get out of this without allowing a run, I might even use Stroman in the eighth.
Leiter?!?!?!????
What else can they do? All of the options suck.
fuuuuuuck.
Okay, the Noel Christmas jokes/costumes are pretty good.
I mean, you’re a tree, man. Of course you like the Christmas jokes!
Man did he want to call that hr
That was hilarious. We’d crucify Sterling for that!
Thank you, Leiter!
Boone, and the Yankees, are SO lucky.
it is almost hopeless with boone
The Hamilton injury, on top of the Nestor injury, was huge. If Nestor started, they’d have Schmidt or Gil in the bullpen, and that would be very nice.
And if THEY started, they’d have Nestor in the bullpen, which would be nice, too.
I picked a good time to turn on HBO.
I picked the wrong night to stop sniffing glue.
I thought they might’ve gone to Stroman for 2 or 3 after the 4th.
Wouldn’t have hated that.
Gaddis and Class A vs Leiter and Mayza and ??
If Cleveland goes 1-2-3 in both 8th and 9th innings, then Noel doesn’t face Weaver in the 9th.
Highly unlikely, of course.
Holy fucking shit, do not bat this fucking guy cleanup!
Great cleanup hitter or the Greatest?
That was such a weird reaction by Gaddis in a game they’re TRAILING.
I think he was celebrating thinking about what Boone might do to blow the game.
Back to Bill Maher. I know what’s going to happen, I don’t know exactly how, but when I’m driving I don’t slow down to watch highway accidents.
Apparently you’re the only one, though.
Our pen would be good if our pitchers could go more than 5.
Leiter has got this inning? Or is someone warming?
Just walk Kwan. You HAVE to.
FUCKING INSANE
What the fuck
YOU COULD HAVE JUST TAGGED HIM YOURSELF, YOU IDIOT
Fire Rizzo into the sun
His OPS is over 1.000.
You gotta be fucking kidding me.
Keep changing pitchers and find the guy who doesn’t have it. Boone 101.
How in the world is THAT your takeaway from that? Should he have just left Holmes in there?
LOL
the next time I see Leiter it better be on the side of a fuckin milk carton
Fuck leiter. Fuck Rizzo. Fuck Boone.
Groundballs that are hit just the wrong place is the story of this team this season.
Isn’t Stroman a better pitcher than Leiter? The pen was short, why not Stroman after Gil for 2 or 3?
I was thinking that Rizzo is fielding like a drunk, but maybe it’s that he’s fielding like a guy who’s high on painkillers.
But he’s not hitting that way. Or do they relax you for hitting?
I wasn’t watching. What did Rizzo do in the field?
It wasn’t really his fault. Leiter made a weird throw to first. Rizzo COULD have gotten him, but it was really all on Leiter.
Pinch run and bunt?
Jazz and Leiter, Cashman’s trade deadline moves. Name a better GM!
It’s hard to see the Yankees winning this.
Phenom!
Just a sac fly, Wells, please!
How do you let wells hit here?
Again… How was he batting there?
Ballsy steal
A single would be even nicer, Wells!
And Wells strikes out. More RISP fail.
Trevy can’t throw anyone out, so I get it, but ugh…we all knew that was coming.
Coulda gone Martian? Wells is not a contact hitter.
Cold off the bench against this guy?
Yay, error!
Incredible
Yankees most clutch performer, errors by the other team!
And WP, don’ forget the WP.
RAB “ I knew all those weak grounders by Verdugo would come in handy one day.”
Gleyber with the hit w/RISP.
Give that man a QO!!
Keep gleyber!
Gleyber Blues… When I’m gone
When I’m gone
You’re gonna miss me when I’m gone
Why pinch run for GLEYBER?
Blah.
Then IBB Judge to face Chisholm.
Thank god THIS guy is the cleanup hitter. Embarrassing, Boone.
Boone cannot be embarrassed.
He’s an automatic out here. It’s so annoying.
I’m shocked Jazz even made contact.
Chisholm, the greatest or second-greatest Yankees cleanup batter?
Jazz cleanup G.O.A.T.
Of COURSE Noel is due up second. Of COURSE he couldn’t be leading off the inning. Of COURSE.
Boone couldn’t be making worse decisions if he was legitimately trying to throw the game. My brother and I decided they needed at least 10 to win, so they didn’t make it. It’ll be another rough loss.
Boone also seeing the critical importance of the 10th run would explain pinch-running for Gleyber.
Rizzo had BETTER be in the fucking cleanup spot tomorrow.
k, k, walk, bomb, lose in extras.
Kahnle, eh.
Nice comeback from 3-1.
Gift k
This team is living off gifts.
In all fairness, so is the other team.
Thank you, shitty ump!
Strikes please
I don’t like the walk, but I get it.
I’d rather have stroman after those 2 abs
ANOTHER FUCKING BLOOP.
And here we go.
I do not like this
Still do not like
A well struck ball caught for the second out. Things evened out.
Yay, win!
*exhale*
Imagine if the guy they brought in for defense botched that?
Gleyber has played sound defense all postseason, Berti has not. Classic Boone trying to throw the game yet again. It almost worked!
Win!
There’s a game tomorrow? Why?
this series may kill me.
concur
After yesterday I couldn’t watch this straight to finish. I relied on anRAB tweet telling me it was over one way or another.
RAB “ Half-expected Berti to fire that ball into the stands after the bobble. The parade is five wins away.” Only half?
This postseason is teaching me one important thing: in the grand scheme of things, the manager has a minimal impact on the outcome of a game. Even making the worst possible decisions can be overcome.
It had a huge impact on the outcome of the game. The fact that they won it doesn’t change that.
When the team you’re facing is clearly worse than your team, and when they also have bad luck and a number of questionable decisions, then sure, you might win.
But they’ve lost at least a couple of DOZEN games this year due to Boone’s decisions. We’ve been sure of games lost on those decisions at least that many times.
hot take time, huh
This feels like a race to outlose the other team, with some insane home run heroics thrown into the 8th and 9th. It’s the best and worst looks mashed roght up next to each other.
Gil’s 4th inning was huge.
Cleveland manager Stephen Vogt said he never considered walking Stanton.
Sharp camera work by TBS on Noel’s fly ball out.
Um – yeah, I assumed it was gone off the bat and the camera showing the stands did nothing to dissuade me from that assumption. Shocked to see it caught.
Hearing the Cleveland radio call is AMAZING.
