From Bryan Hoch:
Jose Trevino was ready to toss his bat aside, believing he’d just seen a pitch sail high for ball four. The Yankees’ catcher was surprised when that offering was rung up as a strike, and even more shocked two pitches later, when he was punched out looking at a borderline offering.
As Trevino slammed his bat against the dugout bench, pitching coach Matt Blake was ejected, appearing to tell home-plate umpire Edwin Moscoso: “You missed two!” That was how the evening went for the Yankees, who dropped a 5-4 contest to the Rays at Tropicana Field on Thursday, accepting yet another series loss.
I share the featured image of the awful call on strike three against Trevino (that otherwise would have loaded the bases with one out for Anthony Volpe to ground into an inning-ending double play) not to dispute the call, although the call was awful, but to highlight how much of a dumb fuck Boone is to pinch-hit Jose fucking Trevino for Austin Wells because of righty-lefty when A. Austin Wells had already homered and singled in the game, and B. DOESN’T EVEN HAVE TERRIBLE LEFT-RIGHT SPLITS!!
Boone is the dumbest fucking strategic manager I’ve ever seen. Some of his dumb moves work out, but for the most part, his shit just does not work. It’s pathetic.
In any event, what was also pathetic was Nestor Cortes fucking SUCKING against a terrible Tampa Bay lineup. The Yankee bullpen handled the Rays easily, but Nestor was ROCKED for five runs in less than five innings. What a loser.
Hilariously, though, the Orioles got swept at home against the mediocre Chicago Cubs (it’s like I’ve been telling you folks, the National League has a lot of teams that could win some games. None of them are, like, GOOD, but it’s not that surprising to get swept by a Cincy or a Chicago. They’re not BAD teams), so the Yankees actually GAINED a game on the Orioles during this Tampa Bay series, and head to Baltimore just two games out of first place (annoyingly, just 3.5 games ahead of the Red Sox for third).
So, well, I guess this is when the Yankees proceed to get swept by the Orioles as the Red Sox sweep whatever shitty team they’re playing this weekend, and the Yankees head into the All-Star break five games out of first, and a half game ahead of third.
That Carlos Rodon-started finale to the first half is going to be a BLAST (by which I mean the Orioles are going to blast, like, five home runs in the first inning before Rodon decides to move away from his fastball in the second, and then pitches four innings of shutout ball down 7-0).
It’s more fun to read about them sucking then to watch them suck. It’s actually funny. I really enjoy the write ups so keep up the good work writing about the Yankees horrible work.
And please PM me the day then fire Boone so I can start watching again that night!
In fact Wells had before last night, small sample, a much higher BA, though less power, against LHPs.
It really is impossible to imagine them winning a game this series, isn’t it? I mean, if you ask me – they may. But somehow I can’t see it.
Vivas getting called up. Likely to sit on the bench.
It’s possible that DJ is hurt (SHOCKING, I know), so Vivas might actually get to play. But yes, the fact that he is on the 40-man already definitely makes this seem less interesting.
Oh, huh, it’s DAVIS that is going on the IL. I was wondering why he’d been missing in action recently.
Okay, so, yeah, Vivas is likely going to sit on the bench, which is hilarious.
An interesting approach would be, as I suggested recently, to DH Gleyber.
Vivas 2B
Soto RF
Judge CF
Rice 1B
Gleyber DH
Wells C
Volpe SS
Verdugo LF
LeMahieu 3B
JD Davis another of Cash’s clever finds to IL. If you’re not gonna play Visas what’s the sense. OBP is his strength, 400+ OBP June, July.
RAB: Vivas has been very good the last few weeks after missing the start of the season with a broken orbital bone. There is more to life than exit velocity, but an 83.5 mph average exit velo in AAA is 😬 (max exit velos are a bit more promising). We’ll see where this goes.
Yeah, I’d love to see Vivas get some burn as a leadoff hitter.
“Vivas is likely going to sit on the bench, which is hilarious.”
If that’s true, then they’re just the absolute worst.
(And if that’s not true, they’re still clearly the absolute worst, but you know what I’m saying.)
After thinking about it a bit, I think they might actually play him. If all they cared about was some IF depth, they’d call up Peraza again. With the entire IF STRUGGLING, it makes sense to try SOMETHING before making a big(ish) trade.
If they’re bring him up, they’d damned well *better* play him.
Yankees “keep missing opportunities.” One reason may be over the last 30 days they have the second lowest team BA over the last 30 days at 222. Seems like for years Cash and Boone have deemphasized BA, maybe way too much. phenom has the the 4th lowest BA at 170. Verdugo 11th at 186. It’s kind of hilarious that two of the worst hitter for BA in baseball have been our two leadoff hitters.
The clear target for the Yankees this trade deadline should be Jonathan India. He doesn’t really have a longterm role with the Reds, and he could play either second or third (horribly, but still). He could be Gleyber’s replacement, and he is team controlled through 2026.
That guy’s going to cut his hair?
Making Jonathan India cut his hair would be a crime against nature. I’d rather see them burn a VanGogh than make India change anything.
Davis IL for stomach retroactive to 7/9 so he’ll probably be back right after the ASB. Dodged a big one there.
Merrifield released. Having a terrible year. Sounds like Cash kind of prospect.
Sunday game 11:30 am on Roku channel. There’s a Roku channel?
How is Merrifield 35 already?
Sheesh.
RLYW site looking weird. Reply button available even for old threads. Also I have to log in every time I leave site on iPad.
They’re finally leading DJ off! The downside is that it means no VIvas, and Jahmai Jones at DH.
Finally. If DJ has anything left in the tank, that is the move to try and squeeze it out of him.
Vivas really isn’t going to play. On fucking brand.
Please.
I’d much, MUCH rather see more Vivas and less Jones. (And “less” is actually a cipher for “none.”)
I mean, among the players who suck like the abyss, DJ might have been the best choice up to now. But if you can try something actually worthwhile, that’s light years better. If he had really started coming around with the bat, that would be another story.
But it’s so NOT another story, unfortunately…
A thing to hate about this team.
I don’t want to be pressured to root for injuries.
Sure but Jones is hitting 333/1067 against LHPs. I don’t think it will last but for now I don’t mind him starting against LHPs. I imagine Vivas will get a chance against RHPs however I think he’s just keeping a seat warm for the great JD Davis.
You actually think those number by Jones mean anything?
You actually think those numbers by Jones mean anything?
Yankees brain trust: We lost 2 of 3 to the Rays and gained a game on the O’s. If we can keep that up …
Nice to see that their pitcher has the better ERA tonight.
About a 30% chance of rain tonight 8-10. Could be bad for Cole.
