Mention the American League Cy Young Award to Cam Schlittler, and the conversation usually doesn’t last long. The Yankees right-hander prefers to remain focused on what he needs to do every five days, especially as his team closes in on securing a postseason berth.
After firing another six splendid frames in Sunday’s 2-0 win over the Mets to grab the Major League ERA lead, Schlittler’s continued dominance had the Yankees wondering if he might need to clear shelf space for more than one trophy this offseason.
“I think valuable is a good word. He might be the MVP, too,” manager Aaron Boone said. “He’s been awesome. Just an awesome season, and hopefully there’s a lot left in the tank.”
No pitcher has won MVP since the Dodgers’ Clayton Kershaw in 2014. This year, the Astros’ Yordan Alvarez and the Rays’ Junior Caminero are very much in the discussion, but Schlittler deserves consideration.
“It’s been done before, right?” said Cody Bellinger, a teammate of Kershaw’s with Los Angeles. “That was a pretty outstanding year for Kersh, and Schlitt’s been doing such an amazing job. That’d be very exciting.”
It’s funny, I think “Cam for MVP” would have actually had a chance had they tried it earlier in the season, but you can’t drop a narrative THIS big THIS late in the season, so Cam has no chance at MVP.
Hilariously, Judge totally shut it down when asked about it, which was too funny.
Anyhow, great win. The featured image is showing just HOW close we came to the season ending by Cam getting his pitching hand broken by a 116 MPH line drive. “Luckily,” it just hit him in the hamstring. Let’s hope that doesn’t matter too much.

It’s never a mortal lock. There are too many voters who will bend over backwards to come up with any excuse whatsoever to not vote for a Yankee. Dylan Cease is that excuse this year, the same way Altuve was in 2017 for Judge.

If Cam gets his ass kicked in his last two starts, Cease has a chance. I thought Cease was the clear favorite, but then he had some real stumbles, most notably allowing four runs to the Athletics.
Schlittler is now comfortably ahead of Cease, and there really isn’t anything even for Yankee-haters to hang their hat on in this one.
Could they just go TOTALLY rogue? Sure, but I doubt it.

After reading the NY Times Sunday Magazine story on the Yankees post 9/11 and their quest for a championship I decided to watch the 9th inning of game 7 for the first time. On the day I was home and watching the game but when Mark Grace singled, I experienced a wave of nausea and turned the game off hoping to turn it back on in a while and watch the Yankees sipping champagne. Didn’t work out that way. I remember reading of Mariano’s error but have no recollection of reading about Brossius’s major league choke. And I don’t remember that Tony effing Woemack had a big hit. Glad I missed it.
It was awful. My brother (not a Yankees fan) had just told me the Yankees were going to blow it, and I actually went to the basement to watch it by myself (I did the same for Game 5 and it worked out).
So I was expecting him to blow it the whole time, and it was BRUTAL.
But Brossius. What was he thinking?

Years later, it came to light that Pettitte was inadvertently tipping his pitches during the game. Hitters like Arizona’s Mark Grace noticed a slight difference in Pettitte’s pause out of the stretch—allowing the Diamondbacks to sit on specific pitches and mercilessly tag him before he was pulled early in the blowout.
Not sure Judge has thought it through. Saying Schlittler shouldn’t be MVP because there’s a Cy Young Award is like saying that Alvarez shouldn’t be MVP because there’s a Hank Aaron Award. Not sure Judge would try to make that argument. But if you think Alvarez is the MVP then you should also think Schlittler should at least be eligible.
Now, maybe Judge was just trying to argue for Junior Caminero or Bobby Witt. But probably not.
Maybe Judge should stop hurting himself so seriously while playing with a minor injury and not worry about MVP voting.
And unless someone is so awesome, the MVP should go to a player on a winning team that makes the postseason.
