With the pitching matchups in this series, the Yankees sort of need to win this one.
Oddly enough, the Yankees are keeping Elmer Rodriguez up and appear to be considering him for the fifth spot in the rotation, and are planning to try using Will Warren as a piggyback option to see if he can work as a reliever in the playoffs. It’s not INSANE, I don’t think.
Fifth straight strikeout for Jones following a long foul home run.
Judge struck out 208 times in his rookie season.
The Bosox won; the Rays are on their way to winning.
Boston with 1-0 win after a 6-5 win yesterday. I wouldn’t be surprised if they win the next 20 games and sweep the playoffs. Tampa crushing Texas. Yankees need to win this to avoid the sweep with Ray and King pitching the next two.
Elite “ Xander Bogaerts knocks in a run with a single that falls in front of Trent Grisham, who seemed to have trouble getting a jump from CF. Padres lead, 1-0.”
Grisham out. Looks like he might’ve taken a bad step or a hammy thing. Cody fouled a ball of his shin. Paging the earthling.
That was a bomb by Rice.
A B Bomb from B Rice
phenom last 5 games 12/17 hitting 706 with 5 home runs.

Rangers got 4-runs in the eighth, trailing the Rays 6-5. Rays have two on, one out in the ninth.
EDIT: The Rays have scored one run so far, now leading 7-5.
Grisham right hamstring discomfort. If he goes on IL who comes up Dominguez or Schumann?
Great question. I guess Schuemann.
As I noted earlier, I thought Jones was going to get the starting job over Grisham either way, but this obviously makes things a lot simpler (it also helps Rosario keep his roster spot).
Judge should be back in a week or two barring an expected setback.
Rangers leave the tying run on third as the Rays win 7-6.
Belli took a swing to strike out on that Rice would even be embarrassed by.
Red Sox Os with a senseless benches clearing non brawl. Whitlock with his 24th hold and sub 2 era, Kriske with a 9 career era.
Doesn’t look likely we score and they have Mason Miller.
Yeah, they pretty much have to hope to hold the Padres until the 10th.
At the VERY least they can’t go 1-2-3 in, like, 5 pitches against Miller. Make him throw some pitches!
Didn’t look like the Yankees had a prayer against any of the Padres relievers. Doesn’t augur well for us against Boston.
Or make an out on three pitches. Whichever.
Two outs on six pitches. Come the fuck on, guys.
9 pitches to get three outs. 100% you bring this guy back for the 10th if the Padres don’t walk it off in the 9th.
Yankees had a shitty game offensively start to now. They didn’t do squat against San Diego’s worst starter, Ray and King to follow.
I love you, Spencer.
Can Ramos not bunt?
The baserunning on this team is SHOCKINGLY bad. Holy shit, Spencer, that was so fucking bad.
That wasn’t smart. So Yankees. Unless he knew Ramos was going to strike out making the first out at third is a no no. It shouldn’t even be close.
Yeah, I’m not saying you can’t steal third there, but you have to steal it EASILY for you to steal third. We’ve seen Cabby and Jazz do it, and it was fine, because they knew they had it stolen. It was just an idiotic play.
But hey, I liked the brief lead, at least!
That was a smart challenge. Xander would’ve been the winning run.
Well, THAT sucked.
Blackburn was so due.
As we’ve noted, that’s what happens when you say “Hey, Paul Blackburn, be perfect every night or we’re fucked.”
Must be nice to have a catcher with an 849 OPS who can throw out three baserunners in the game instead of one with a sub 600 OPS.
Yankee with 15 strikeouts today including 9 by their 4 relievers over 5 innings.
Yankees 17-20 in one run games, 4-10 in xtras. Yankees with an 8 game Pythag lead on Tampa.
Katie S Yankees: 7th extra inning walk-off loss this season.
That’s the most in MLB.
7 extra inning walk-off losses is also tied for the most in a season in Yankees history (also in 2023, 2011, 1988, 1984, 1943, 1916)
Despite the best bullpen in baseball
An overused bullpen.
