When Spencer Jones first examined the Yankees’ schedule, this was the trip he had circled – a homecoming series in the stadium where the Encinitas, Calif., native had once attended games to cheer on the local team, dreaming of an opportunity to play in the Major Leagues.
For one half-inning, Jones had the storybook moment he’d hoped for, thrilling his family and friends with a go-ahead, 10th-inning hit off Mason Miller. But Luis Campusano called game in the home half, belting a two-run walk-off homer off Paul Blackburn that sent the Yankees to a 3-2 loss on Friday evening.
Paul Blackburn has been SO good that it is hard to give him too much shit about this one. Like we’ve been saying for WEEKS now, you can’t constantly have the situation be, “Okay, Blackburn, Bednar, and Headrick (and for a while there, Cruz), be perfect or we’re fucked!” This offense is just a pile of shit. It’s so fucking annoying how much these guys just repeatedly CHOKE. Walker Buehler wasn’t good YEARS ago, and he fucking DOMINATED them, so of course the Padres bullpen dominated them, too. The Yankees would have had a real shot in the 10th to do some damage, except their piece of shit choke job top of the order were retired by Mason Miller in so few pitches that he was easily able to pitch the 10th, and while Spencer Jones did a great job doubling in a run to start the inning, the rest of the lineup had no answer for Miller. Jones, of course, also moronically got thrown out at third trying to steal, but, well, come on, it wasn’t like Jazz Chisholm ever had a chance of making contact against Mason Miller, and then it would be down to George Lombard to get a two-out hit. Seems unlikely, as well.
So I can’t complain too much about Jones’ moronic play (plus, there is a chance that the Yankees fucked up by not challenging it. Jones MIGHT have been safe at third on the play due to a terrible tag by the third baseman. I think his lead foot leaves the bag before his back foot hits, and I imagine that that is what their replay guy said).
The Yankees gave up their first run of the game on a ball that Trent Grisham couldn’t get to because he pulled his hamstring. I figure he’s probably done for the rest of the regular season, but luckily, Judge might very well be returning as soon as TUESDAY, which is amazing. But that means we’re going to see Heliot Ramos against a righty this weekend (but at least he was going to play against Robbie Ray either way). It’ll be interesting to see who gets called up for Grisham, whether it is Schuemann or Dominguez.
Anyhow, terrible loss. Their lead over the Red Sox is now smaller than their deficit to the Rays, which sucks.

If that’s true, then – giving the situation and the inning – they’re beyond criminally stupid for not challenging it. They were saving it for a MORE crucial play? You CANNOT be serious!
I generally think that they should have challenged, as well, and just cross your fingers (the call on the field was out, so it would be hard to overturn), but if the replay guy says he’s out, I can see not challenging it.
But yes, I would have just challenged it, as well, just as a longshot.
looked like his leg was in to me. when he kind of pops off it’s a split second and his knee was in. i’m not objective and these things are not typically overturned but did boone have a dinner reservation wtf?
they say there’s no such thing as a bad one year deal and i say seeing that ball drop in center is exhibit z of Trashman and Baboone hurting this team.
Ump Doug Eddings went on a power trip against a rookie pitcher for how he wore his hat, off to the side like Sonny Gray, then call a pitch violation even tho the hitter wasn’t in the box, than missed a tag at home plate that was impossible to miss.
