I cannot get how much social media is melting down about Spencer Jones not keeping his gig when Judge returns, despite him clearly keeping his job when Judge returns, as seen from him, you know, batting ahead of Grisham in the lineup and starting tonight instead of Grisham with Ramos playing. It’s so weird to be preemptively angry at a Yankee decision when it seems clear that that ISN’T the decision they’re making. Spencer Jones has played his way into a starting role. That’s awesome. We should be thrilled about that. The Yankees, I assure you, are thrilled with that. The idea that Cashman is, like, “I’m mad that the guy I drafted in the first round is hitting too well to sit. I need to start Trent Grisham instead because he got a qualifying offer” is too silly.
Anyhow, Cam Schlittler really needs to get his shit together and dominate this Angels lineup tonight.

Yeah, he’s always been an amazing fielder. That’s why I love that a defensive fuckup by him helped the Yankees win earlier this season.
Cabby has been fucking EXPOSED during this period where he’s been playing every day due to injuries to McMahon and Lombard. It’s like he doesn’t even have a CHANCE up there.

They’ve had a bunch of those lately (knock on wood, fingers crossed, which isn’t easy).
I haven’t watched any games this year, again, just following via box scores and condensed games. With that perspective, I think we all need to take a step back to acknowledge how amazing Cam Schlittler has been. I’ve followed the Yankees since 1987 and cannot remember any of their home-grown pitchers coming anywhere close to this level of dominance. Maybe Rivera, but that’s a very different role. It’s truly incredible.
Severino was great for a couple of seasons, and incredibly fun to watch, but even he wasn’t as good as Schlittler this year.
25-year-old Andy Pettitte threw 240 and a third innings in 1997 to a 2.88 ERA in the midst of the steroid era. I think that’s probably the best I’ve seen a homegrown Yankee pitcher pitch. However, Pettitte never pitched that well ever again (he had only one season above 4 bWAR after 1997, and he had 5.6 bWAR in 1996, and 8.4 bWAR in 1997, so we all obviously thought he’d be a lot better than he turned out to be), while we can still hope that Schlittler keeps this up.
My only issue with Schlittler is that he’s not a particularly good pitcher in the classical sense, ie he’s a thrower. He’s like a rich-man’s Chad Green – great tunneling and plenty of woof. If, what I’m hoping, he becomes more artful he could be even better.
I’m old enough to have been in high school to see Guidry 1978 so Cam isn’t there yet but truly great to see.
