      Dominguez replaced Stanton, and the idea was that he would play everyday as the DH. There really wasn’t a place for Grichuk in that roster once Stanton got hurt.

      They couldn’t keep playing without a backup shortstop.

    3. I think their plan when they signed him was to have Rice move to catcher when Volpe got off the IL, and just go without a backup shortstop until then (having McMahon cover). When Rice hit like an All Star, they decided they couldn’t risk having him catch, at which point Grichuk didn’t make sense for the roster anymore.

    4. Their decision to not make Rice a catcher after Volpe was healthy changed a lot of their plans. Luckily for Goldy, DH opened up so he could play.

      I mean, is there a theoretical chance that simply no one is willing to trade a catcher? I GUESS, but I highly doubt it. They’ve said that they’re going to acquire a catcher for months now. They’re definitely getting a catcher. And Cashman has dumped Sonny Gray, Joey Gallo, Aaron Hicks, DJ LeMahieu, Josh Donaldson, Harrison Bader, IKF. He is fine dumping dudes he acquired, and here, it would just be sending Doval to the minors.

    3. Manfred’s folly is not an excuse for any one team losing. Rules are rules. Game situations are game situations. Cashman needs to build a roster that can do the things it takes to win in extras, and Boone needs to deploy the people who can do those things. And also to reaffirm and teach those things. Of all these I have the least confidence in Boone. Cashman’s teams have been dumber than Watson’s and Michael’s, but I’m not sure how much of that was player selection by the GM’s, coach selection by the manager, and how much was development by the rest of the organization.

      The Yankees typically have a strong bullpen, and they used to dominate extra innings by virtue of having more good relief pitchers than their opponents. That advantage was lost with the Manfred Man. You just can’t compare past seasons with the current Manfred Man seasons and say, “Wow, this is the first time they ever did this season…that happened because of this new rule!”

      Teams both scoring in extras used to be rare, now it is not.

  95. A couple days ago I asked a question that someone here answered. Over the last few years when judge plays the yanks are a 94 win team and when he’s out they’re a 76 win team. So is that 9 WAR or 18 WAR?

    1. I suspect the discrepancy is because WAR ignores context, while actual W-L is entirely context dependent. That is, Judge’s WAR is based on the expected impact of his own individual events as if he were on any team, neglecting the unfortunate-for-him fact that he’s on the Boone/Cashman Yanks.

      – The Yankees are a slightly below average team without Judge, getting outscored at the margins in most games. A 76 win Pythag is a run differential of about -45 to -50 on the season, or about -0.3 per game. Compared to a replacement level player, Judge’s career wRC/162 is +124 (+0.76/game). So absent context, you’d expect Judge to transform the Yankees from a -46 run differential to a +68 run differential, which is a swing of about 12 games, to an 88 win team.
      – “Replacement level” can take on new meaning under Cashman and Boone. Particularly in 2023, they got a lot of below-replacement-level production from guys who made their way through the outfield for chunks of the year: Jake Bauers (-0.9 bWAR), Everson Pereira (-0.6 bWAR), Aaron Hicks (-0.5 bWAR), and for a portion of the year, Waldo (-1.5 bWAR). So WAR isn’t giving Judge the credit for the fact that his actual replacements stink worse than a routine AAA callup.
      – I believe the Yankees have underperformed their Pythag in most recent years, which I believe is a consequence of poor roster design by Cashman and poor in-game management by Boone. But Judge’s offensive production, at nearly 3/4 of a run per game, can make a close lead Boone-proof or bullpen-proof, and can make an early lead WOE-proof.

      All told, if Judge’s production averages 9 WAR / 162 in the abstract, it might well mean 12 or more wins for these Yankees.

  96. Just to review why I think Boone is a terrible manager.
    Tuesday night Yanks use Blackburn for the 8th but Boone decided to take him out. Which resulted in having to use Bednar. Which took him out of the next two games.
    Wednesday he used Blackburn yet again which led directly to that loss.
    And today Bednar was unavailable which lead directly to another loss.
    So one idiotic unneeded decision in a game results in two losses.
    I’ll repeat my mantra – they’ll never win with him as manager

  98. The Yankees’ problems in extra innings, IMO, are all about strikeouts.
    1. They strike out far too much. If the first batter strikes out it basically takes a hit to get the run in from second. If the first batter does move the runner to third and the next batter strikes out, again you most likely need a hit to score the run. A team filled with .220 hitters needs to find a way to score that Manfred Man without getting a hit. The strikeouts make that really difficult.
    2. Their relievers don’t get enough strikeouts. At least the relievers that are still available in extra innings. Usually by then the CoT guys have already been used and guys who are left (Hill, Yarbrough, Blackburn) are all contact pitchers. Or else Doval/Bird who have swing and miss stuff but also have swing and curse stuff.

    But this is the team Cashman built.

    1. I imagine that is precisely the type of reliever that Cashman is planning on acquiring at the deadline. Effross was that back in 2022, but then he got hurt as soon as he got here.

    2. Also, the bullpen has been mostly excellent, and got through two extra innings yesterday, and nearly two today (and part of that was because Rice made a bad play on a groundball that should have been the second out of the inning).

      So I don’t think they are really much of the problem with their extra innings woes. It’s the shitty offense all the way.

    1. They’re closer to the Yankees in the loss column than the Yankees are to the Rays.

    2. They’re a better team now. Yankee offense is basically dead men walking. Even slumping Rice is good. Catching an abomination. Middle/corner infield light hitting utility players, a defense first 3b, and an underachieving 50/50 2b. An outfield of 4th outfielders. Schumann a platoon starting left fielder? Our pitching is better, theres is good.

  100. Even Lombard went 0-5 today. Waldo is the only other player in AAA who’s halfway decent. The farm system is DOA when it comes to hitting except maybe at the lowest levels. Elmer and Lagrange might be good but evaluators put them at the 50-100 prospect level.The Dodgers have a strong minor league system and they are so much better at the major league level than us. I watched this team thru the Pat Kelly and Melido Perez years and I’ll continue to watch but Cash’s future is in the past and Boone always was and always will be a third rate manager.

    1. I’ve been watching since Horace Clarke and Gene Michael. But I’ve made the decision to stop until the owner cares as much as I do. No business owner who gave a damn would have allowed a GM and manager this much failure for the kind of money he’s pouring in. But sadly like a drug I can’t get away. So I come here, read and comment. And watch the crappy condensed games – which miss half the action – on occasion.
