I’m stunned Boone gave Volpe a day off, but at the same time, Caballero has been so good this series, how do you NOT reward him? Caballero sucks as a hitter, too, but he at least knows what he is good at and tries to do that, ya know? He doesn’t act like he’s a home run hitter. He just tries to get on base however way he can, and then steals all the bases. He’s also controllable for FOUR MORE SEASONS after this one! And all for Everson fucking Pereira, who was NEVER EVER NEVER EVER going to play here, and who I was assuming would be dealt for some Cody Morris-type pitcher.
This game is kind of pointless, though, because we all know that the 2025 Yankees are immune to sweeping teams, so they’ll find SOME way to get shut down by Miles fucking Mikolas (or, in the alternative, Will Warren will pick this game as his “Random shitty game” that he loves so much).
From bop in the last thread:
I can just about guarantee they are just saying, “Okay, this dude isn’t doing anything but DHing or pinch hitting the rest of the season.”
How weird is it that Scott went on the IL for the injury he received while trying to snare Judge’s home run, but he didn’t come out of the game? That injury looked gnarly at the time. I know adrenaline is a hell of a drug, but DANG.
Warning track powerx2
The outfield defense in this series by everyone other than Dominguez has been AMAZING.
G Ryan Yarbrough and Fernando Cruz are both on rehab assignments with Triple-A Scranton, and Jonathan Loáisiga has started a throwing program. The first two are both likely to be ready before rosters expand on September 1st, and Loáisiga might be ready by then as well, meaning the Yankees would need to find three spots with only two relievers capable of being optioned to the minors: Brent Headrick and Yerry De Los Santos.
Okay, if they’re not going to score multiple runs in the first, they’re basically fucked in this game.
townies have won 14/16 home games. The Yankees 8/16.
One Friday, 12 yesterday, O/U 1.5 today
Hey guys this pitcher is not good. It’s ok to sweep. It’s not being rude. 4.97 era, 84 era+.
The Mighty Miles Mikolas.
This team just can’t put together a string of good games.
How can they when the opposition keeps throwing their aces at the Yankees?
It’s because Volpe is not playing.
Meanwhile another good game from Warren so far.
Runz
It took one pitch for Caballero to hit through a hole that Volpe hasn’t hit through once in three years.
This is what I saying at the start. Caballero has no ego, he just tries to get on base however he can. He’s not talented enough to do it that often, but he’s fundamentally sound. He reminds me a lot of Luis Sojo. Just a fundamentally sound guy who doesn’t know how to hit that well.
Which is a lot better than Peraza and Vivas. Rosario also a lot better
Wow hits with RISP,
Hitter friendly ump or terrible ump. That was a ball.
How can that be a hit?
Also Warren has lost the plate . Or not
That Walker walk was broooooooooootal.
0-2 to a walk after an error
It’s just stupid pitching. The double is a double, whatever, sometimes you give up a hit. You can’t totally control that shit, but the walk? That’s totally under your control, and it’s just stupid pitching.
Warren is both clearly A. a talented pitcher and B. Just not quite there yet mentally. If he ever gets there, he will be a very good pitcher.
That was a gift two runs.
They’re not good, but if Boone hadn’t thrown away 5 games already we could pretend that they might go somewhere, maybe.
The good news is that a new GM and manager could fix this.
I have a feeling we will see Doval and his 6+ era, -0.5 WAR and 2+ WHIP today.
Giving 2-runs back right away, so very Yankees.
Thanks for nothing, Warren.
Ooph, Jazz. And he’s actually one of their BEST defenders.
Warren got fucked by his defenders today, but, just like Gerrit Cole, you can’t let that shit fuck you up, and it clearly has.
Ninety-five pitches in 4.2 innings against a mediocre Cardinals lineup. So very Will Warren.
Oh great, Devin Williams, fireman, a role he’s NEVER done. THIS will work out, I’m sure.
He’s just lost the ability to put guys away. It’s BAFFLING.
This is what I was saying last night. Jordan Walker is the type of hitter a smart pitcher should be able to take total advantage of, and Williams did it right there.
At least the Yankees aren’t the only team to blow a late lead against the Marlins. And in a Garrett Crochet start, too, so that’s extra painful!
The BoSox didn’t exactly look that impressive in that Miami series against the Marlins’ two worst pitchers and Junk.
Do you bunt McMahon?
First pitch GIDP, you’re fitting right in, McMahon!
I swear, if Texas blows an 8-2 8th inning lead to Toronto…
McMahon having his worst game as a Yankee
Using Devin Williams for one out seems unwise.
Well, they can win two in a row anyway. Three, that’s a challenge.
A. Why not stick with Devin Willaims for more than ONE out?
B. Fucking Doval, he’s now moved from iffy to just outright shitty
If you’re gonna bring in Devin let him pitch the next inning. Doval is arguably worse than Devin.
Yeah, I REALLY don’t the logic behind burning Devin Williams for ONE out.
Doval is the exact headcase who can only pitch well when there’s no pressure. Lead gone? Okay, NOW I’ll dominate.
I don’t get why they didn’t just bunt with McMahon.
How bad is this Cardinals bullpen that they’re using Leahy for two innings today after using him a lot last night?
They figure the Yankees noodle bats will help him out.
Rice gets frozen on pitches in that spot probably too often.
What a great throw by Church, but also a terrible decision.
Tied at 4, but was hoping for more than a sac fly.
Didn’t I call Doval and his -0.5 WAR, 6.35 era and 2.118 WHIP before he came in.
Chisholm sure loves to swing at bullshit.
HR happy is the reason why.
Oh, DEFINITELY STICK WITH DOVAL FOR TWO INNINGS, YOU ASSHOLE.
They changed the McMahon play to an error, so Warren ended up with only one earned run today.
I refuse to believe Doval is not still an upgrade over Ian Hamilton, Yerry de Los Santos, and Brent Headrick, but man, he makes it hard to believe that. Again, though, the Yankees gave up basically nothing for him, so it’s hard to get too mad about it.
If BEDNAR sucks, then yeah, they gave up a LOT for Bednar, so THAT would kill me.
So wait, if this goes extras, who get teh tenth? Headrick? Leiter?
Between a ba$ pen and a worse pen, bet on the bad pen.
I love me some Tim Hill. You definitely let him start the 8th if the Yankees don’t score. Heck, even if the Yankees score, I might let him start the 8th.
Guardians blow a lead, get swept by the Braves. The Blue Jays also couldn’t complete their unlikely comeback, so a win today would see the Yankees gain on both Toronto and Boston, AND increase their lead on Cleveland to 3.5 games.
So I think we all know that there’s no way that’s happening, right?
Warren really wasn’t bad. An error and a two out double that I think was catchable but belli came in first? Need to see that replay. One earned run in 4.2 is not gear but it beats fried.
No, he wasn’t bad. What frustrates me about Warren is that he’s NOT bad. He’s just frustrating. He doesn’t pitch smarter.
The 0-2 walk.
Yep, that was the worst moment of the game by far. You CAN’T do that shit.
Ninety-five pitches in 4.2 innings against that Cardinals lineup is bad.
It’s not GOOD, agreed, but I wouldn’t call it BAD.
Lo 1ip or 1h 1k 1bb
Cruz 1ip 2r 2h Scranton era 27 which is better than Effross8.84
I’d have pinch hit Stanton for Goldy, then brought Volpe in to play short, move Caballero to right field, Bellinger to first base.
Between a bad pen and a worse pen bet on the bad pen St Lou
You could also pinch hit Stanton for Dominguez, and have Caballero play right, move Belli to left.
Hah, the crowd was mic’ed up and after some fans were booing a call, another fan was saying, “Nah, that was a ball.”
That was a really hard luck out by Dominguez.
McMahon was swinging at that pitch before it was thrown.
They aren’t scoring again today so the faster they lose the better
I like Tim hill. A guy like that would have been awesome to have last year in game 1 if the WS against Freddy F.
Too bad he wasn’t …uh…
In that situation, I don’t think there was a good option. I’d hate Tim Hill against Ohtani and Betts, as well. All you needed was a single to tie the game. Hill routinely gave up singles that postseason.
That said, I 100% would have gone to Hill over Cortes, as well.
Nice jinx, Ruocco.
There’s no way that Pozo got there in time. What a dumb challenge.
By the way DevoW had struck out 8 of the last 11 hitters he’s faced with one walk and no hits.
Yeah, middle innings Devin Williams is sadly the best Devin Williams.
Speed kills!
Do you bunt Caballero to third?
Never mind! Thanks, St. Louis!
phenom must be hurt. Otherwise how could Stanton not pinch hit
He’s here to pinch hit for the lefty, Rice.
What is a swing? No one knows!!!
They’re doing something in low minors.
Man on third, no one out. This RISP fail is going to EPIC!
Shit, that’s some AWFUL luck. Grisham hit that hard, but in JUST the wrong place.
Grisham refuses to take advantage of the gift runner on third.
They try to give you the run.
Why pinch hit for rice??? Stanton Ks too much
Rice struggles against lefties, Stanton destroys them.
FUCK. Their luck this inning has been AWFUL. He’ll probably K now.
Volpe runs here, and you do a double substitution for Caballero. Volpe plays short, Wells comes in to catch.
Setting up the DP.
Oh, Girardi is smarter than me. Volpe comes in for Dominguez, Caballero to right.
Laughed so hard almost spit my drink!
He said Volpe to catch.
Suicide squeeze.
The contact play, right? It ALWAYS works!
Belli is just unlike most Yankee hitters, isn’t he? He can stick around.
I wouldn’t call that an error. That’s horseshit.
More gifts, lovely gifts.
That wasn’t an error.
Jazz sure loves to fucking swing, huh?
HR happy.
Little did they know Saggase was the world’s greatest Yankee fan.
Now that I read the comments, note that I’m following on gameday.
Goldy gets to hit against a lefty!
Who pitches the 9th?
Bednar only threw three pitches last night, so I’d use Bednar. Weaver wouldn’t be crazy, either, though.
Oh wow, they pulled Romero. Honestly, that was probably the right decision at this point.
Is their second baseman’s name Sir Jay Z?
I like the fact that Chisholm actual tries to steal bases now when he gets on.
The absence of that was inexplicable.
INEXPLICABLE.
Golden.
Goldy beat the righty!
Goldielocks says screw your damned splits!
Goldy!
Weird out by Dominguez.
I guess you stick with Weaver at this point, right?
I’d probably still bring in Bednar for the final out, so as to not tax Weaver too much. You want these guys to be available for Tuesday, ya know?
Doesn’t matter. It’s just a good thing that Boone already used Doval.
It’s too bad it’s logically impossible for Boone to adopt the strategy “just see what Boone would do, then do the opposite.
Goddamn tragedy.
2 outs on 5 pitches.
Nice.
3 outs on 7 pitches – even better.
Yay, win. Yay, 3-game winning streak. 🎆 Eat your hearts out, Brewers.
Weissert did us a solid.
Both former Yankees, Whitlock and Weissert, gave up runs in the Miami comeback.
Playing bad teams is fun. Too bad there aren’t that many if them.
0.5 behind Boston; 3.5 ahead of clev.
Playoffs?
I wouldn’t even call the Cardinals a BAD team. They were at .500 when the Yankees arrived here.
https://x.com/SharpStats17/status/1956891540602720699
Part of that is no other manager would have left him in in the Toronto game where he gave up some more runs and also last night.
Raleigh hit #47.
Stupid Mets.
I should be glad the the M’s lost but I just don’t like the mutts.
