From Dave Sessions:
The Yankees have their captain back now, but the ship is still running aground.
Reigning American League MVP Aaron Judge returned to the lineup Tuesday night, but neither the Yankees’ slugger nor any of his teammates had an answer for Rangers ace Nathan Eovaldi in a 2-0 loss — the Yankees’ fifth consecutive defeat.
“We’ve got some work to do,” said Judge, one of eight Yankees who went hitless against Eovaldi. “A lot of things to clean up. But the boys in here are fired up to change all that and get things right. We’ve got a great ballclub in here, so … it’s just a lot of mistakes all around, some mental mistakes and physical mistakes. But we’ve got to fix them. We’ve got to fix them now.”
Easier said than done against Eovaldi, who retired 24 of the 25 batters he faced, tossing eight scoreless innings, striking out six and yielding only Anthony Volpe’s third-inning double.
“We’ve faced him a lot over the years — we’ve had some success, but he’s had a lot of nights where he’s really pitched well against us,” Yankees manager Aaron Boone said. “This was right up there. We were getting it in play some, but really not a lot of hard contact at all. … he was in command. We just didn’t mount much at all.”
Eovaldi is on a crazy hot streak right now, so I honestly don’t even begrudge them for not hitting him (it SUCKS, but I get it. He’s making everyone look awful right now), but what I do begrudge, of course, is that Devin Williams sucks right now, and needs to be moved down to the 6th and 7th innings. Devin Williams can still be an asset for this team, but it ain’t in the 8th or 9th inning. He can work his way back to the 8th inning, but he better never see another save chance in his short, shitty Yankee career.
David Bednar is signed through next season. David Bednar is having an excellent season. David Bednar should obviously be the fucking closer, with Luke Weaver as his primary setup man.
Between Doval, Williams, Leiter, Hill, De Los Santos, and Headrick, the Yankees have some decent arms for the middle innings. But Williams can’t be closing anymore. And that Boone let him walk the bases loaded, and then LET HIM CONTINUE TO FUCKING PTICH after loading the bases is just mind-boggling.
The Yankees were up 3 games on Toronto when they went into Toronto, and were swept in four games to drop out of the divisional lead. The Yankees were up 2.5 games on Texas coming into Texas, and they’re about to be swept out of the playoffs. Remarkable in how bad it is.
Featured image is none other than Devin “I give up a lot of runs right now, so maybe stop using me in high leverage situations” Williams, giving up the game-losing single to shitty Rowdy Tellez.
By the way, the motherfuckin’ Astros have reconfigured their rotation so that Hunter Brown and Framber Valdez both pitch in Yankees Stadium this weekend. So the Yankees are fucked there, too. Hunter Brown/Cam Schlittler on Friday. Awesome.
I really wasn’t enthused about this team coming into this year, but they almost pulled me back in with their first few months. I’m so glad I never got invested in them this year. What a fucking mess.
Well, they’ll be out of the playoff picture after tonight, so we can expect some big changes.
lol
If I was the owner with the largest payroll in the league and Missing the playoffs for the second time in 3 years heads would roll. Maybe like George the person we think is the owner is dead?
This team is now on pace for 85-88 wins.
Let’s get that down to a cool 81-81 and fire someone. Anyone. Anyone at all. Could be anybody. Oh hey, Aaron Boone. What about him?
I’m glad that I’m not a professional athlete. It’s fucking hard to do what they do and any minor variation can be detrimental to a career. I don’t have thick skin, if a dept director says that my numbers are down and I need to bring them up, I have a borderline panic attack until I talk myself down even though in 25 years I’ve never had even a brief brush with being fired. I can’t imagine being so fucking good and then just having my pitches just be slightly off, get hammered, and angering a fan base of millions.
Anyway, fire Boone and have Cashman retire to a farm upstate.
I was fired at Bell Labs although they called it an enforced resignation
Cut Williams today. He is done. His face shows defeat as soon as he comes into the game. He hates being on the Yankees and knows every game he is costing himself big bucks in free agency. Move on from him.
That my only good thought in this. Williams may have cost us 2025 but he’s cost himself millions.
I’d use him for mop up; we’re paying him anyway. And he’s better than Bird.
PA The Yankees began Tuesday with a .666 OPS from the bottom third of the order, 30 points below Toronto’s 7-9, 40 points below Boston’s. This raises the risk of bad sequencing – you can set an inning up right, and if you happen to be at the “soft” part of your lineup, you’re less likely to do damage than the Red Sox are.
After Williams had faced the three batters and clearly didn’t have it why did Boone stick with him?
I remember last year when Clay Holmes couldn’t find home he learned to have a quick hook.
We need a new definition for insanity with a venn diagram of stupidity. i know what goes in the middle!
The obsession with ‘fixing’ Williams has cost them at least two games recently.
