From Bryan Hoch:
Chewing on the aftermath of yet another forgettable showing Friday night, Aaron Boone bristled in his postgame remarks, saying that he didn’t like losing to anyone – but especially the Red Sox. Then he gestured toward a clock, noting that his Yankees would have an opportunity to reverse that narrative in a few short hours.
Boone cautioned that it would be no easy task, not with Boston handing the ball to ace Garrett Crochet. And once Friday evening turned into Saturday afternoon, the storyline played like a rerun, with Crochet striking out 11 as the Yanks absorbed a 12-1 defeat in the Bronx.
“We’ve got to play better,” captain Aaron Judge said. “That’s what it comes down to. Coaches can’t fix that, fans can’t fix that, media can’t fix that. It’s the players in this room. We’ve got to step up.”
The Yankees (69-60) have lost eight consecutive games to the Red Sox this season, dipping 1 1/2 games behind Boston (71-59) in the American League Wild Card chase. Over those eight games, Boston has outscored New York, 48-22.
“We’re not running out of time,” Boone said, “but if we don’t do better, then it’s going to fizzle out and we’re not going to get where we want to be.”
I mean, come on, we all knew they weren’t going to win this one. I think it’s kind of silly to be EXTRA upset because some back-of-the-barrel fill-in guy gave up 7 runs in the 9th when he was just here to eat innings until some other relievers get healthy.
So the 12-1 part of the game isn’t the part that should piss us off, it’s the 1 part of the game. This offense has just been outright pathetic. They’ve had three starters pitch in these three games, and only Warren has had a bad game (a rare bad game for him), and even there, “bad” was five runs in four innings. Which IS bad, but it’s not insane.
Otherwise, it was five innings of two run ball for Gil, and six innings of shutout ball from Fried.
The pitching hasn’t been the problem. It’s this pathetic offense that has been the problem. These hitters are all wilting under the slightest amount of pressure. It’s pathetic.
Meanwhile, Anthony Volpe can’t hit for shit AND he is fielding for shit. Oh my god, Boone, just fucking start Caballero already! Volpe can be the pinch-runner.
The featured image is Volpe absolutely AIR-mailing a throw in the ninth. It’s not the worst part of the game, but I just thought it was so hilarious HOW bad of a throw this was.
So Carlos Rodon needs to throw a shutout on Sunday night if these losers have any shot at winning a game in this series. Oh, but wait, it’s on national TV, so of course they’re all going to fucking suck again.
Cmon man. We knew this season was shot once Cole went down. We all knew the good start would fade just like it did in the past. We all know we are never going to win a WS with Alfred E Neuman as the Yankee manager. So what are you getting so upset about?
The only hope I have is they play so poorly down the stretch that the owner wakes up from his bed of money and fires the manager and presumably the GM.
Absolutely. I pretty much punted this season as soon as Cole went for TJS, so these losses are not as painful as they have been in previous seasons.
“We gotta play better” is like an alcoholic lamenting that he needs to go to a meeting and stop drinking tomorrow, then tomorrow comes and Labor Day is the target and so on.
I didn’t say WHICH Labor Day.
Hoch 🖊️ Aaron Boone says the Yankees still hold the pen to write their story. Maybe, but they’re running out of paper.
When judge is going good he covers for a lot of the crap around him. When he’s not it’s highlighted. 2 of the 3 losses were very winnable games. Alas looks like he might be a choker. One day he’ll have a 2009 post-season Arod run I hope.
Wow. They are very bad.
I have to say the LLWS is quite a bit more exciting. The local team is Connecticut I suppose. They have this kid named Pellegrini who pitches and plays short. I’d take him over Volpe. Today, at like age 12 or whatever.
Last 30 days Yankees are 12th in runs scored, 12th in OPS and a scintillating 23rd in BA. BA used to be scoffed at, is it the new money ball? It seems to me a lot of Yankees are trying to hit home runs on pitches that are unlikely to wind up in the seats and rather than adjusting they wind up striking out or hitting lazy fly balls. This is at least somewhat on Boone and Rowson.
when the red sox call up prospects they can hit and play defense.
it’s really weird
