From Steve Kornacki (hey, it’s what Yankees.com says):
Tigers left-hander Tarik Skubal had it all going against the Yankees in New York’s 5-0 loss on Tuesday afternoon at Comerica Park. He dropped back in his delivery, and served up a steady stream of frustrating pitches over six scoreless innings.
Yankees veteran right-hander Carlos Carrasco gave up three solo homers in the fourth inning as hot-hitting Spencer Torkelson led off with a 404-foot shot to left-center. Then came back-to-back homers on sinkers by Zach McKinstry and Dillon Dingler to provide Skubal more than enough cushion with a 4-0 lead.
“He got a little bit of a lead there and really goes on the attack,” said Yankees manager Aaron Boone. “He put us on our heels a little bit. …Today, Skubal got a lead and beat us, period.”
The Yankees struggle against lefties, and Skubal is probably the best lefty in the game, so this was an obvious loss with Cookie Carrasco on the other side of the mound. I’m honestly not too upset about this one, or even Game 1.
Game 3 they need to win, and they also really needed to have won the Pittsburgh game in extra innings.
This is not a bad Yankees team, but they obviously need to beat up on the bad teams, since teams with good pitching are a really tough matchup for them right now, since their starters all suck besides Fried. Schmidt is back soon, though, and I still have some hope for Warren. I think the plan should be to DFA Cookie when Schmidt returns, and ride with Warren. Warren has struggled, but he’s at least been showing them SOMEthing. Cookie has no upside.

Lose this anfternoon and we’re 500 after that hot start. Tigers throw another good pitcher Flaherty vs Fried.

Athletic They’re dead last in MLB with zero quality starts; 26th with a 5.40 ERA; 23rd in HR/9; and 20th in slugging percentage.
The Yankees have two of the five worst starters in the sport in terms of Stuff+, Stroman and Carlos Carrasco, in their rotation. Stuff+ is important because it measures the physical characteristics of a pitch, including release point, velocity, movement and spin rate. The higher a Stuff+ score is, the more leeway a pitcher can generally have with their location.
If the Yankees decided to part ways with Carrasco, one outside-the-box depth idea the club could consider is stretching out reliever Brent Headrick. Headrick was a starter as recently as 2023 with the Minnesota Twins organization, and he’s shown signs of being an improved pitcher this year with a new splitter and a better fastball.
Stroman yet another example cashman wasting Hal’s money.
The good news is that he’s so bad he won’t get 140 innings even if he gets 32 starts!
Flaherty strikes out the side.
In the Martian’s first stint in the majors it was like we had Judge #2.
Seems like some other universe.
Judge didn’t really come into his own until age 25. BA never ranked him above 31, he was 46 going into 2017. Martian’s only 22. Hoping Spencer will be a late bloomer..
F this S
Let me find a movie to watch.
This great record breaking power lineup disappeared. Did Cash trade away the torpedo guys?
Goldy’s been a pleasant surprise. Cody not so much.
Please sir. Just a run sir. Anything you can spare. Even a double helps in tough times like these.
I’m on GD.
Don’t tell me they tried the contact play and lost AGAIN?
Yep
It’s so hard to root for dumb.
Jazz hitting 188. phenom reverting to mean.
I. have some things to do. For some reason FAN FM carrying talk show instead of game. Same Tune in and Audacy. AM signal impossibly bad.
Are those … can it be … runs?!
Rice!
BOTH pitches 4 and 5 were strike three.
Wow Fried is really having a game
Impressive D Detroit
MOAR RUNS
Nice. You need to make them pay there and Judge did.
The sagging Chisholm.
Devin Farnsworth II
Farnsy with a WHIP north of 3. Correct me if I’m wrong, but that’s not good.
Make him shave between batters. The Ghost of George is angry.
Now we know why the Brewers traded this guy.
Worst loss of the season, incoming.
Wow this will be a bad loss. Why did Judge try to get the third run at home allowing the tying run to second?
A good throw by Wells might’ve nailed him. But you’re 100% correct.
Aroldis Clay Farnsworth II
From awful to offal.
I am not impressed with this guy. Let’s go back to picking up scrap heap relievers and letting Blake work his magic. Closers are volatile and they’re not worth a premium. I will die on that hill.
At least Chapman and Holmes were good before they sucked.
Max Fried was the big story. But Devin was the big horror show.
Leiter, our hero. 😏
Terrible Pythag handling there.
Check out Goose gossages first month as a Yankee. Stay calm
That’s, what, approaching 50 years ago?
um
Boone with an excuse for Devin, they took some tough at bats.
That’s an excuse?
How can the reporters keep a straight face?
Well, now Boone’s told all opposing players the secret recipe for getting to Williams!
I missed the start of the thread, and was then way too superstitious to start a thread after the fact. 🙂
Good win, although Devin Williams seems to be a headcase in non-save situations, like a lot of other closers. Chapman was like that, too.
Dane Myers face-plant catch ends the Mets hopes in the 9th.

I don’t know what this means, but I’m laughing already
It’s crazy how much better Detroit is than the other AL Central teams. They have a very good shot at the number one seed just from beating up on their division “rivals.”
Oh, by the way, can now confirm that it’s a DIFFERENT Steve Kornacki who is writing these Yankee recaps for MLB.com.
disappointing
It’s really Wolf Blitzer
