  1. Today’s intrusive thoughts:
    – If only Mickey Mantle had elbow injuries too, what might have been? “Can’t open a bottle” could have been a blessing.
    – How much Grich could a Grichuk chuck if a Grichuk could chuck Grich?

  2. Washed up spoiled milk that fell off a cliff? That’s the Yankees scouting department for you!

Seriously if he shows something, fine, especially if Stanton needs his arms removed. Didn’t he have this last spring, too?

  3. Goldy hitting well against two more RHP’s; but it’s still Spring Training, plus the pitchers weren’t great anyway. Cookie Carrasco is still tossing cookies.

Grisham 0-3, and then his defensive replacement homered. On the one hand it was off a meatball from a AAA guy. But Spencer looked less off-balance in that AB.

    1. Jim Thome walked so Joey Gallo could run strike out so Spencer Jones could fly fly out homer.

  4. The Yankees likely retire too many numbers. Paul O’Neill probably shouldn’t have his uniform number retired.

However, CC Sabathia was a first ballot Hall of Famer who will be wearing a Yankees cap in the Hall of Fame. Preeeeeeeeeeetty sure it’s no problem to retire that dude’s number.

    1. Oh, I see your point, you think he’s been TRYING to improve each season, and it just hasn’t worked out?

That’s possible, but you rarely hear dudes say they’ve totally reinvented their swing like this.

  5. Peter Brody “Luis Gil was wild but effective while Carlos Lagrange turned in three of the most dominant innings you are likely to see this spring.”

    1. MLB Pipeline: Carlos Lagrange dials it up to 102.1, throwing 12 pitches 100+ mph (11 for strikes) with 4 K’s in 3 scoreless frames.

The @Yankees’ top pitching prospect owns the three fastest pitches in Spring Training so far. No walks.

    1. I was really curious to see if they had done anything with Blackburn over the offseason.

And, well, he sure looked fucking good today!

The weird thing is that they had him stretched out, and that’s so unusual. Why stretch out a guy who’s clearly “just” going to be a bullpen guy? Wouldn’t it be better to limit him to two innings?

    1. Let him start off in AAA. He can start so he can stay stretched out down there, and no problem then to come up and pitch from the bullpen.

  6. I just don’t get how Lombard continues to be ranked #1 when he hasn’t been hitting at all! Yes, he’s an amazing defender, but so was, like, fucking Brendan Ryan, you wouldn’t call him a great prospect back in the day, right?

Who was that AWFUL pick they made that was all defense?

    1. Holder! Thanks. Yeah, what an insanely bad pick that was. There are plenty of picks that just don’t work out, but there are few first round picks that have absolutely ZERO chance of succeeding, and that was the case with Holder.

  7. Hoch: Max Fried went 3 IP in his spring debut, allowing one hit with three walks and a strikeout. 56 pitches, 30 strikes.

Ryan McMahon committed an error on a fourth-inning grounder up the middle.

Giancarlo Stanton cracked a 114.3 mph single to left field in his second at-bat.

  8. You know, it’s funny, I’m pretty much already writing Gil off (his injuries have appeared to have ruined his velo), which i think is fair, but I’m also writing Warren off, and that one might NOT be fair.

I forget that he’s only had one season in the majors, and as we saw with Schmidt, late 20s is still young for a starting pitcher, so he could still develop, and the stuff is obviously there.

  9. In general, though, i think it’s best to write guys off early, so you can judge a team fairer. If you’re wishcasting, it can really fuck up your estimation of a team. Better to write dudes off and be pleasantly surprised if they do well.

    1. I have more hope for Gil than Warren. Even last year his raw numbers weren’t bad.

    1. I don’t buy it, but I’d love to be wrong!

If he doesn’t suck, you suddenly have:

      Fried
      Schlittler
      Gil
      Warren
      Weathers

and the rotation is a STRENGTH before you even get to Rodon and Cole.

    2. Gary Phillips Luis Gil just hit 97.1 and 97 mph on back-to-back heaters, the latter of which struck out Carlos Narváez. That’s a good sign.

    1. I am firmly in the “believe it” area for for ERod and Lagrange.

I like that Rodriguez dropped the “Cruz” to make his name easier.

  10. At this point, let’s assume the following guys are locks:

    Bednar
    Doval
    Cruz
    Hill
    Blackburn
    Yarbrough

So that’s just two openings. Only Bido needs a roster spot. They miiiiight carry him for that reason. i bet they DFA him, though, and hope to sneak him through waivers once everyone else is doing THEIR DFAs, as well.

So who are the two guys? Jake Bird, probably, and… who? Winquest to keep him on the team?

  11. The pitching staff finally sucked. Blackburn gave up two runs in two and a third innings, which isn’t ideal, but the REAL bums were Arias and Chivilli.

Luckily, neither seemed likely to make the roster to start the season.

  12. Yankee farm system 26th on MLB Pipeline. “ The Yankees have a strong quartet of Top 100 prospects, with potential 25/25 shortstop Lombard, nearly ready righties Lagrange and Rodríguez and precocious Kilby, a supplemental first-rounder last July. The bad news: Beyond that group, righty Ben Hess and outfielder Spencer Jones, the depth falls off dramatically, the result of New York trading an industry-high players who appeared on Top 30s since the start of 2025. The Yankees also rank first with 21 pitchers on their current Top 30.”

    1. Hašek is still the best defensive catcher in the league, but he’s lost his bat speed.

  13. Hoch: Gerrit Cole’s scouting report on Carlos Lagrange: “It’s like, silly. I’ve never seen anything like it. It’s wild. I’m just blown away by the velocity every time.”
