From Brent Maguire:
he Yankees added more reinforcements to their outfield on Wednesday.
The Yankees have agreed to a Minor League contract with veteran outfielder Randal Grichuk as a non-roster invitee to Spring Training, a source told MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand. The team has not confirmed the deal.
The 34-year-old Grichuk owns a career .251/.298/.465 slash line with 212 home runs in parts of 12 MLB seasons. In 113 games with the D-backs and Royals last season, Grichuk had a .674 OPS and nine home runs.
Grichuk was one of THE best lefty platoon bats out there for the last few years, until last season, when he was terrible all around.
MLB players sometimes age like milk, and their production just falls off a cliff at a point (yes, I am mixing metaphors), so Grichuk might just be washed up. But for a platoon bat with Trent Grisham/late game pinch-hitting option, he really could be useful.
And once again, a guy that Cashman has tried to acquire numerous times in the past becomes a Yankee eventually.
Grichuk has killed the Yankees in the past, so I’m sure that played a factor, as well.
By the way, I love the news that Giancarlo Stanton’s elbows are so fucked up that he can’t open a bag of chips, but he’s somehow totally healthy to play baseball?!
