The Yankees are banking on their pitchers to keep games within reach, at least until some of their big bats are ready to return. Will Warren was unable to shoulder that load, with his recent struggles continuing on Sunday evening.
In a start he described as “pretty [crappy] overall,” Warren was knocked for six runs in three-plus innings, sunk by Alec Bohm’s bases-clearing double as the Yankees saw their three-game winning streak snapped in a 11-4 loss to the Phillies at Citizens Bank Park.
“I’m tired of going out there and doing exactly what happened tonight,” Warren said. “It’s pretty frustrating.”
Already lacking the offensive firepower of stars like Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton, the Yankees lost another significant piece on Sunday, when Cody Bellinger landed on the 10-day injured list with a strained left hamstring.
Judge joined the team for their upcoming trip to Chicago, but he said there is no update on when he might undergo re-imaging on his fractured right rib. The captain believes his team can hold the fort until it is closer to full strength.
“We’ve got a lot of depth. We’ve got a lot of guys in the Minor Leagues ready to go,” Judge said. “We called up Spencer Jones [on Sunday], we’ve given [Jasson] Domínguez some good run here to see what he can do. We’ve got a lot of guys that can fill those holes. You can’t replace a Bellinger, but we’re going to keep doing what we do.”
The Yankees’ shitty offense actually kind of showed up against an outstanding pitcher, so of course Will Warren jut got his ass kicked. Warren’s recent poor performances suggest to me that they’re heading for a situation where, when Carlos Rodon returns from the IL, it will be Warren heading to the minors instead of Weathers heading to the bullpen.
This Yankees pitching staff is interesting. When Rodon gets healthy, you have:
Three starters you have to feel good about every game – Schlittler, Fried, Cole
One starter you have to feel decent about every game – Rodon
One starter who doesn’t suck as much as Will Warren – Weathers
Two relievers you have to feel great about when they enter the game – Bednar, Headrick
One reliever you have to feel pretty fucking good about when he enters the game – Blackburn
One reliever you have to feel good about when it isn’t extra innings – Cruz
Two relievers you can’t worry too much about when they enter – Chivilli, Hill
One guy who eats innings – Yarbrough
One guys who sucks – Doval
So if they add one really good reliever at the trade deadline, that pitching staff suddenly looks REALLY good, right? Doval goes to the minors, and then Chivilli goes to the minors when Clarke Schmidt returns. What a great pitching staff, and Bednar and Blackburn are the only major guys who aren’t under control for 2027 (Hill and Yarbs are free agents, as well, but come on, they’ll easily re-sign Hill if they want him back).
The issue, of course, is that the offense fucking sucks. So hopefully Cashman at LEAST gets Jeffers. As noted during the game, Cabby obviously sucks, too, so it’s not like he’s some great shortstop. Lombard could easily be the starting shortstop by the end of the year. Maybe they actually DO swing a deal involving Volpe. Cabby has a lot of value as a utility piece.
Grisham and Goldy can stop slumping any day now. Holy fuck, this streaky ass fucking lineup.
And since they play a BUNCH of lefties, we’ll keep seeing Rosario continue to suck.

Ali Sanchez has made himself some Major League minimum money with his performance as Wells’ backup. He actually hits like a normal backup catcher. Plenty of teams can use a guy like that. The Yankees’ problem is that his normal backup catcher production (which is bad overall) is better than the STARTER!

Judge played a month with an injury, and obviously worsening it was a bad move by the Captain. Still ticked off.
I think it is likely that it is even worse than him making it WORSE, as I think he literally CREATED the injury by playing through it. He likely had a bone bruise, but he played it INTO a hairline fracture.

this team has been judge and the jerks for years. they always cheap out with rizzo not freeman, belli not tucker, etc etc.

Can anyone figure out using 2023 and 2026 what is the Yankee record with judge on the IL? Then compare to their record when he’s not.
I think he’s worth more than the 8-9-10 WAR he’s being assigned.
He would have been a three-in-a-row MVP in 2026, IMO, had he not done this to himself. And yes, I said the other day this shows how valuable he is above any numbers they assign to him. An interesting dive would be their runs per game without him in 2018, 2019, 2020, 2023, and 2026.

Cody Bellinger To Miss 4-6 Weeks With Hamstring Strain
Fuuuck.
A minimum of 6 weeks, I’d wager.
Manager Aaron Boone told reporters, including Bryan Hoch of MLB.com, that Bellinger has a Grade 2 strain and will miss four to six weeks.
Well, that is not ideal!
That said, a lot of people on social media said “4-6 weeks” as soon as they saw it happen. Apparently, most Grade 1 strains don’t cause THAT big of a reaction, so the estimation was that it must have been a Grade 2, and yeah, 4-6 weeks is a typical return time for a Grade 2.
Let’s hope they add an outfielder at the deadline. The new addition can just be a pinch hitter if they make the playoffs.
Kirschner says that they likely won’t add a “top-of-the-market catcher such as Hunter Goodman because of their internal belief in Austin Wells’ defense.”
But he then says that they’re still trying to get Jeffers. How is Jeffers NOT a top of the market catcher?! He’d instantly become their second best hitter!
