  12. Still wasting too many pitches. Of course, to be fair to Schlittler, it would be nice if he had some wiggle room from having a *gasp* lead to work with, instead of having to feel like the first run he allows being the death knell for the game.

    1. The NBA specifically addressed this very issue YEARS ago. They seed based off of record purely. None of this “Second-best team in the league is seeded behind multiple teams with worse records than it” nonsense.

  31. Sometimes strikeout pitchers just walk a lot of guys. Nolan Ryan averaged 4.5 walks per 9 innings (BB/9) and led his league in walks eight times during individual seasons.

    1. Agreed, but that was his hallmark for months this season was that he DIDN’T walk guys, and then suddenly he’s averaging three walks a game for a month now.

  35. Let’s say Schlittler somehow gets through the sixth cleanly (SOMEHOW). With the doubleheader tomorrow, what makes more sense, trying to wring an inning out of Headrick, or just saying, “Fuck it, let’s make sure we win ONE of these games” and using Blackburn for two, Bednar for the ninth?

    1. An old guy, Sale, threw a complete-game shutout last night, 1-0 against the Dodgers. Our starter couldn’t even go six innings.

    1. They’re guaranteed to not be BEHIND the Red Sox come Sunday night, at least. A tie wouldn’t be the worst thing ever (but obviously, it would be much cooler to be two games up or even…gasp…MORE).

  69. Yay win, but come on. This was the one pitcher they were supposed to hit. They batted .111/.225/.259 for the entire game.

  72. The Yankees continue to tap into the Asian market for international prospects. While he cannot officially sign until January, Korean high schooler Joh Sung-chul (Seongcheol Cho) is heavily rumored to sign with the Yankees. Cho is a two-way player who pitches and plays third base. He likely would have been a first-round pick in the upcoming draft, but is opting to sign with an MLB squad instead.

    Just like with Japanese teenagers, Korean teenagers rarely sign with MLB clubs. The practice is frowned upon, as the KBO wants the top teenage talent to start in their league. You can’t blame them for that. That said, as long as the Yankees follow a protocol, this shouldn’t cause tension. The Orioles were once banned from scouting South Korean amateur games for signing Kim Seong-min in 2012. The contract was eventually voided.

  73. If Rodon goes just 5 or 6 innings yet somehow has a lead, then why not piggyback Fried, rather than relying on a depleted bullpen in both games of the doubleheader? The nightcap could be a house-money bullpen game with Yarbrough, Topa, Hill, Fulmer, and a position player (Ramos? Rosario?) and you’d still have Headrick/Blackburn/Bednar available Sunday, as if Will Warren isn’t going to get shelled.

    He’s the first player since Ronald Acuna Jr in 2021 to hit a HR in a 1-0 win twice in a season.

    The only other Yankee to do it was Joe Pepitone in 1969

    What nobody discusses is that one of the big wins of this process is the theatricality. You watch the pitch swerve in and wait and then ooh!, ahh! and get the result.
    It’s like the myth that the killer calls the cops to laugh at them, and knows he can wait as the first 9 digits come up and they won’t know where he is until the final number comes up (it’s not true, the whole number comes up at once). Here, too, they know the result before the graphic comes on the screen. It IS fast enough, they could just have ABS *INSTEAD* of the ump calling balls and strikes.
    The best thing isn’t the theatricality – it’s that now I finally believe they WILL, sooner or later, have the ABS and get the calls right.

  78. Also, Veggie’s idea bout having Fried relieve Rodon is intriguing.
    In fact, I’m totally on board with that idea – tweak it to say that they go with this strategy if and only if the Yankees are winning when Rodon comes out.
    Almost guarantee yourself at least a split of this series.

    But there is zero chance they go that way, right?
