    1. He’s a legit fine fourth outfielder/option against lefties, but A. They are only playing righties now and B. Boone is playing him everyday and treating him like he’s a fucking superstar.

      The GIANTS didn’t even bat this dude in the top four in the lineup!

  18. I’ll give them this much, Kyle Bradish is actually a legit good pitcher. They still piss the shit out of me, but this isn’t like making fucking Chris Bassitt or post-injury Shane Bieber look good, Bradish is actually a good pitcher.

    1. I don’t get that. There is no world where I would demote Spencer Jones right now for Heliot Ramos. I don’t care if they lose Ramos to a waiver claim – he’s an average hitter, AT BEST, and terrible outfielder. Jones can play all three OF spots, hit for crazy power, and can steal bases, and is already tied for 10th on the team in RBI(!).

    i get the logic of letting him walk but it’s still an embarrassment that they chose not to make him an offer.

    1. It’s weird. They knew he wouldn’t take less than five years, and they were never going to offer five years, so I guess I get it, but yeah, it ended up being a really bad look for them. Just make the offer and let him turn it down. Do the play-acting.

    2. The Mets had offered him an extension, back in 2023, and he turned it down.

      The Mets, with Billy Eppler then as general manager, made a seven-year, $158 million extension offer to Alonso in June 2023 that would have covered the final year of club control and six free-agent seasons. He rejected that bid and subsequently made $20.5 million in his final arbitration season.

    1. JONES! Man, I hope he forces their hand with his demotion this weekend. I doubt he will, but I wish he would.

      If McMahon goes on the IL, then it might open up a spot for him.

    2. If McMahon goes on the IL, can you afford to keep Jones? Garcia could play second and third in a pinch, right? If we want to find Garcia a role when Stanton returns, they need to see if he CAN play second and third, right?

    7. Let’s say Cole gets through the seventh, what is even the plan for the 8th and 9th? Maybe try to see if Hanner can get through the 8th? If they use Yarbs, the Orioles will bring in Mayo the first chance they get. Shit, but I guess you would need Hill to then close? I don’t want to let Cruz close.

      Okay, maybe Cruz in the 8th, then if it remains 5-1, then use Hanner? And if gets tighter, use…Hill to close?! Man, their options kind of suck.

Max Kellerman: There is a real Hall of Fame case to be made for Nettles: he played the most underrepresented position in the Hall of Fame because it’s perceived as more of an offensive position than it really is. Nettles produced offense, all time elite 3B defense, and was great in the playoffs

    5. All three of those guys should be in the Hall. Munson has a higher JAWS than Buster Posey and Yadier Molina, both of whom I suspect will get in on the writers’ ballot. Averaged 5.2 WAR per 162 games for his career and probably had a couple years left in the tank. Might even have brought the ’81 squad over the top to match Posey’s three titles.

    6. So yeah, Nettles and Randolph and Munson, they all belong in the HOF.
      Not that the Errors Committee would put three Yankees on one ballot…

    Yankees have scored 5+ runs in back to back games for the first time since July 9-10 (Rays, Nationals).

    Gerrit Cole threw 1st-pitch strikes to 22 of 23 (95.7%) of batters on Tuesday.

    That’s the highest 1st-pitch strike % in any game of his career.

  50. When Belli returns, it really would be best if Ramos were the one to get optioned, rather than Jones. Bats are comparable, handedness is not super relevant, and there’s such a difference on defense. Then, when Judge gets back, Jones can cover for whoever needs the day off from the field, and I imagine he’ll still play pretty much every day.

    2. If McMahon is hurt, then you may want Rosario on the roster. He’s more versatile than Ramos, being unable to play both outfield *and* infield.

    3. “Nah gonna happen. It’ll be Jones or Rosario.” And it’ll definitely be Jones, since if its Jones, they can theoretically bring him back, while if it is Rosario, they lose him.

      Now, AFTER September 1st, when Rosario would no longer be postseason eligible for any other team, I could possibly see the Yankees cutting Rosario THEN.

    1. The Orioles are not a bad team. They were the third Wild Card when the series began. I think it was more than just a “you should be expected to sweep them” sweep.

    2. The Orioles were already sellers, unloading Rutschman to a division rival. That’s a team that knows it’s not great.
      The Blue Jays at least rearranged their deck chairs at the deadline, replacing Gausman with Arrighetti, and they’re 10-6 since then, including winning a series against the Yankees just last week. They’re still trying seriously for a wild card spot, and they’ve got Dylan Cease going tomorrow. So if the Yankees can sweep the Jays, then that’ll be something.

  53. On why the Yankees didn’t stopped winning when they stopped hitting:
    Brian’s been talking about the deadened ball – that could be a reason why the Yankee offense has had such a hard time breaking out. It’s not a hit and run offense, it’s a power offense, for the most part.
    But that same factor is exactly what frequently suddenly breaks a great pitching performance. So it could well explain why the pitching has been so CONSISTENTLY excellent.
    If that’s true, than the B may largely compensate for A.

  55. Also, on the current debate: who has more potential, Ramos or Spencer? Obviously, it’s night and day.
    But Brian’s also right – if you can just send Spencer down for two weeks and bring him back up, then – why not?
    (The plan has the added advantage of giving him a spell down where he gets the real coaching that made him a prospect, resulting – one can hope – in some period of relative immunity to the degenerating effects of the major league coaching staff.)
