Grisham and Chisholm are finally hot, so today is a good day to sit both of them to make sure that Ryan McMahon can start against a lefty. Smrt managing.
Immediately recognizable managing.
Judge is never getting a day as DH this season.
i member complaining about rice not getting reps in at catcher this spring.
I think it was definitely the plan, but Rice just hit too well to risk it.
Interesting Dave Winfield interview. It’s weird how Matt Barnes has become an actually good interviewer.

Cole has had problems with the Royals in the past, so I’m a bit concerned, especially considering how bad they looked in the top of the first.
W.O.E.
Defensive specialist Cabby
Conventional wisdom is that the second game back is the trickiest because the adrenaline is gone.
God, his combo of control and stuff really is legendary.
From 24 hits to no hits in 24 hours.
Good thing their two hottest hitters are both sitting. Wouldn’t want to stagger their rest.
W.O.E. #2
Noah Cameron perfect game was not on my bingo card.
McMahon is starting vs a LHP?
Gotta get him going.
Plus, Jazz was playing too well. Gotta put a stop to that shit.
Looking at this guy, you can’t tell me wasn’t pitching hurt in 2024.
Why are they trying to bunt for hits?! It’s the third fucking inning!
Why did Boone pick this game to start McMahon?
Presumably defense behind Cole. It’s not a GOOD reason, but that’s likely the reason.
boone is more “do what they don’t expect” and less “do what they don’t want you to do”.
Wait I thought he was Fried’s personal third baseman, not Cole’s
He’s definitely Fried’s personal third baseman, but with Fried on the IL, Cole gets possession of him.
Wells, when you suck this much, you foul off close 3-2 pitches, dude.
He’d just pop out.
Not by the Iron Duke
What an amazing throw!
I liked the top of the fourth better than the top of the first, second, and third.
Be Rice, speed merchant.
Ben Rice.
Devil Rays getting boat raced by the birds
Okay, Judge, a positive AB here would be nice.
Yeah, not.
Cole has thrown 57 pitches in 5 innings.
Ben Rice just worked a 10-pitch walk to knock out the other starter with no outs in the 6th.
This is pretty much what you want to see against a AAA team. People still taking their job seriously.
Well, that was Captainly.
Judge needs to bunt more to avoid that.
Or just K.
The last MLB pitcher with back to back complete game shutouts was?
AJ Burnett 2012.
Garcia has oddly owned him tonight.
I won’t front, I was worried there for a sec there off of Witt’s bat.
Thank goodness that Grisham sat tonight for lulz.
Terrible baserunning by Grisham there.
Cabby does all of his nonsense and then doesn’t do anything. It’s kind of annoying.
Can they pinch hit for Wells here?
How can anyone be as bad as Wells is?
That would’ve been a good spot for Jazz. Its a two run game.
Agreed. Maybe Jazz has a minor injury?
We’ve got the right guy up here.
They should have a run in here but Grisham fucked up.
To be fair, it wasn’t an easy play, but still, your job is to make the correct read.
Okay, Grisham’s fuckup didn’t matter. Phew. Also, Goldy should have challenged the 3-0 strike, so I’m glad that also didn’t matter.
Doesn’t Goldy strike you as a guy who thinks challenging pitches is ungentlemanly?
Really nice piece of hitting by Rice.
First baseman’s defense was turrible
I don’t get this move at ALL. He’s at 79 pitches. Let him get his seven innings, and don’t put his runs in the hands of these guys.
It also means that the high leverage guys will likely have to pitch when you could make it be just Cole and Blackburn.
And now Cruz is being a nutjob.
I’ll give Boone this much, if you bring Cruz in with two outs, you can pull him at any point next inning.
McMahon needs to play every day.
I won’t front, my first thought was, “Can Cabby catch?”
Cole has always been great, but even he has never looked this good. This really could be a historically great starting rotation.
So of course Judge is under 1000 OPS, Rice is almost under 1000 OPS, Cody at 860. Not the gaudy numbers they all had earlier in the season. And Grisham’s hardly over 700.
And two games against AAA doesn’t change the fact that it’s not going to be enough to compensate for the Abyss.
Have to hope the ENTIRE LINEUP is just in a slump, that it’s temporary.
jake bird 0 war
doval -0.1
bednar -0.4
lol
WAR is a crude measure for relievers because of how few innings they throw and one bad outing can wreck it, just like for ERA. that said we know these guys suck
Credit where it’s due, Weathers was a great pickup
and my broken clock gets sunshine on it, sometimes.
I would argue that Jazz and Caballero were too.
We’d have to wait a few years to see, but signing Bellinger over Tucker may also have been the right move.
I am only a tiny bit of a Cashman apologist because I don’t believe he is terrible. I believe he is about average. I mean, there are other teams with similar-ish payrolls that seem to struggle with consistency. The Phillies do alright, Toronto had a great year last year, but they are not perennially frightening or even especially good. And the Mets are their own special case.
I want a new GM too (the continued employment of Boone is plenty enough reason to eject Cash), but I am also not confident that our current ownership group and its advisors are at all capable of choosing a better replacement.
since the yanks are posturing that they won’t get a catcher to integrate with the staff during the middle of the season, how about a reunion with Higgy (who has caught some of the staff) to platoon?
the rangers might want to save some money, maybe they want escarra. who knows.
