It is pretty funny to see how the Yankees looked at this Rays team, and it’s CONSTANT contact (and bunting) and said, “Yeah, we are never letting Amed Rosario see the field against this team.”
Expect to see a lot of bloop singles to center field in this series so long as Trent Grisham and his awful hamstring continues to patrol center for the Yankees.
According to Heyman, “Baltimore was willing to move Rutschman to the Bronx for a four-player package consisting of Austin Wells, Elmer Rodriguez, outfield prospect Yostin Pena, and one of either Ryan Weathers or Will Warren.”
Come on, you couldn’t make that fucking trade. A completely unreasonable ask.
Not worth it at all.
It was an ask that was asking for a no, basically. A sort of “fuck you” offer. Boston gave up a lot, too, of course, but not THAT much.
At least it’ll be fun to root for Murakami against Tampa.
Veggie realizes how portentous this series will be. Can we call it a sweep if it goes only three games? Can Spencer get a platinum sobrereo in one of these games?
Spencer really is a funny player. He’ll either do something interesting or he’ll strike out five times on awful swings.
100 degrees in Chavez Ravine. Atlanta seems kinda hung over. Dodgers seem tanned, rested, and ready.
Getting killed by BABIP right away. SO fucking annoying. At least that wasn’t on Grisham.
That’s the way to make Rasmussen work… Not.
Of course it’s better to have the time off. Silly argument they make every year. Also the team with the time off is generally the better team.
0-2 to 3-2 should not happen
Don’t look scared, Gerrit Cole.
You’re f*ing Gerritt Cole!
I don’t think so.
From 0-2 on Caminero to walking him.
Wells!
I could’ve challenged those 2
Their half-inning looked so much easier than NY’s 1/2 inning.
But maybe that’s okay, since they got nothing out of it.
What is Sydney Sweeney even selling in that ad?
I didn’t hate the first. Bloop and then they worked around their only power hitter, and he got the rest of the guys pretty easily.
How in the world did that shit hang up there so long?!
Lombard smacks it hard, and more BABIB bullshit.
Just have to hope it evens out.
Jazz against Rasmussen is basically an automatic out. Just have to hope he eats some pitches before he inevitably makes out.
Shockingly good at-bat by Jazz. I don’t know how you throw THAT pitch on pitch 10.
Our only hope is Boston releases Erik Miller and Tampa picks him up before the 5th.
Jazz! Not who I expected that from, but all right!
Jazz made Rasmussen work.
Professional AB Jazz.
Thank goodness Grisham didn’t swing first pitch.
Grisham took two pitches, and no steal by Jazz. Surprising.
There’s the steal. Hey, at least he’s now over 30 pitches in two innings.
And they fixed the 1st inning’s pitch-count problems. Good.
Yeah, that was so fucking annoying.
Circling the base like that made me laugh. He might not be very good, but he can be fun.
Grisham, don’t fucking take strike three, dude. This team just LOVES taking strike three.
Changeup froze him.
Yeah, honestly, I’m probably being too harsh on this one specific strike three.
Nice called strike there, Grisham.
Welp. at least they made him throw some pitches.
I DID like that.
Was it a strike?
But yes, the best part of this inning was the fouling off of good two strike pitches by Jazz; the worst part was the NOT fouling off of close two-strike pitches by Grisham.
It’s that fucking simple, Rowson.
Rob’s probably right that getting frozen on a changeup is actually kind of normal. It’s when they take fastballs for strike three that I get infuriated.
I solved this problem by not watching this year (until now). If they lose you can direct your complaints to me.
With two strikes, the goal is to take a slower swing that stays in the zone longer and foul it off.
Not to prove that you’re Ted f*ing Williams, especially when you’re NOT Ted f*ing Williams.
Walls up, so they probably have to walk him. They LOVE walking Walls.
Wow, I’ll take that call. I’m so bad at judging check swings.
I say to my wife each time, “What is a swing?” There never is a clear answer.
Next year there will be.
Are they actually planning on installing it next year? I’m down for it!
This game is incredibly annoying.
It could easily be worse. Rasmussen could be doing this on, like, half the amount of pitches.
They’re putting it in play and getting nothing out of it.
BABIP gods come on be kinder to them!
Try to take the walk, Rice. Raise that pitch count.
Yankees making him work.
“Good at-bat by Rice there.”
Rasmussen threw four pitches all way out of the strike zone, so, huh?
You know, I feel like they’re having decent abs.
I take that back.
Agreed. Just not Rice there, per se. None of those pitches were remotely enticing to swing at.
Guy is missing the strike zone all inning, and you strike out at a pitch near your head. Not good, Belli!
Not what you want, etc.
You know what I want.
If you retire Aranda, do you still pitch around Caminero? I really think they should give him the Bonds treatment.
Fucking Cole ruined THAT plan.
Shit.
Three days off in a 5 game series. Everything MLB does in the playoff is so ridiculous.
OK I’ve seen enough from Cole
Brian, I really don’t think there’s a hitter in baseball this year I’d give the Bonds treatment to. The HR leaders aren’t even at 50, and on, and on, you know. There are some good hitters, but no one I wouldn’t even try to pitch to.
On second thought maybe we shoulda started Rodon.
Ok, not the end of the world. 1 run. Let’s go.
Seriously. One solo home run. He’s looked good. Please.
Pretty good. But a little wild. But not more than their guy.
He’s also given up two booming doubles, though.
But yes, in general, he’s been fine, and I doubt Rodon would have been scoreless through three.
Simpson made that look a lot harder than it needed to be. That should have been an easy out.
Portentous.
Tampa a home run and two hard hit doubles. Yankees one hard hit out, Lombard. Remember Yankees did next to nothing with Tolle or Gray.
This is the real Yankees offense.
Really missing Judge, even though Judge has had his struggles in the playoffs, it’s a different lineup w/o him. Sigh.
One run is inevitably going to be more than enough, but it won’t be just one
Bah.
BLACKBURN? I guess the plan is to use Warren and Weathers aggressively.
Strikes would be better, Cole.
For whatever reason, Yankee pitchers rarely go right at Walls.
We can all fairly be pissed if they lose this game, but come on, it ain’t on Cole over Rodon. It’s one run in four innings! So it was really annoying for the announcers to be doubting the call. It’s been ONE run!
Like when did we start trusting Rodon?!
That’s better.
I was shocked when they said Blackburn was up.
Shocked. Cole is nowhere near done. Cole could go 110 pitches if he keeps it going.
Could.
Just what the hell was that?
I didn’t hear the announcers, after the 1st half-inning I switched to 660 audio.
I gather I have no reason to regret that!
I would have Cole face Diaz for the third time, then put in Rodon. I think he could keep it close through another four innings.
Those first two pitches to Grisham were INSANE, but he has to try to foul off that third strike.
Rasmussen has thrown some amazing pitches.
Those last 2 pitches were filthy.
Throwing a pitch that barely touches the very upper tip of the right side of the strike zone, and then following it with a pitch that barely touches the lower tip of the left side of the strike zone is just insanity.
The third pitch was good, too, but those first two pitches were insanity.
I haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaate how quick that fifth inning was.
Wells hit it hard, though. They are getting good contact off of him, but it’s all for naught, and instead, they have a chance to be fucking no-hit in a playoff game, which is less than ideal.
Yeah that sucked. But God, that last pitch to Grisham? It moved like a screwball, at high velocity.
Yankees don’t have enough offense to win a World Series. There’s Rice and Cody and Garcia. Only Rice is scary and everyone else is kind of blah.
The Rangers won it in 2023 with a pretty mediocre offense.
We just have to hope they fluke into some things. Crazier things have happened.
Plays down the line foul at that fucking stadium, man.
Rasmussen, at just 69, pitches through five innings.
They were doing pretty well with him until the last inning or so.
Cole hung tough
How do you NOT bring him back for the sixth? They’re so positive he’s done for the night. I don’t get it.
Yeah, I’d ride him here. No reason to give the Rays extra ABs against the A list relievers right now.
And that was one hell of a pitch by Cole!
Yeah, that was very Rasmussen-like.
I would not even consider NOT bringing him out for the sixth. Wouldn’t even occur to me.
Hate this.
I don’t hate the bunt, but that was a terrible bunt.
Third hard hit ball. No hits.
Oh my god, the BABIP torture in this game is AWFUL.
Rice fucking smoked that ball.
Cody, buddy, come on, you KNOW he has that pitch in his pocket, fucking swing at it.
They might legitimately get no-hit in this fucking game.
SO frustrating. On the other hand, three isn’t a particularly high number, they haven’t earned things statistically evening out.
SWING AT THAT YOU JERK!
Just cover the plate to foul it off!
Skubal 94 pitches thru 6 vs Braves
Rasmussen 83 pitches thru 6
Bringing in Weathers for his first appearance since he was hurt in a 1-0 game in the sixth inning of Game 1 of the ALDS seems like a dumb idea.
You guys see Weathers playfully talking shit to Cam when Cam did some Boston shit-talking? Weathers replied to him, “Professional ragebaiter.”
“You guys see Weathers playfully talking shit to Cam when Cam did some Boston shit-talking? Weathers replied to him, “Professional ragebaiter.””
Heh. Where is that, have a link?
My bad, it was actually a reply to that viral post Schlittler made last month.
Cam, 96 through 5.
No hit through six; your true Yankees offense is back. Sorry, Bosox fans (not).
It’s crazy that I’m almost more looking for them to just get a fucking HIT at this point.
Ah, well, it’s probably best my fandom has waned. Years ago I’d be a wreck at this point.
Okay, Weathers at least definitely proved himself with this inning. I’m cool with him in any capacity going forward. I would have liked to have seen him debut in a different spot, but he looks fucking LEGIT.
Picking from the pitchers is, at this point, an embarrassment of riches.
Boone’s wrong choices are still pretty good choices.
They need to put Stanton in right and Spence in center.
Can Stanton even move? Even if he could, making him play right on turf seems like a dangerous idea. Maybe in Yankee Stadium they could try it.
Ugh, no. Stanton is a statue, worse than Grisham.
Has as SINGLE GROUND BALL found a hole?
No.
And there have been a slew of ground balls.
This is so embarrassing.
Spencer Jones isn’t about to change that no-hit streak here.
EDITED TO ADD: I thought he might have at least had a competitive at-bat, but I guess that was also too much to ask.
Hole. E. Fucking. Shit.
I think we might’ve seen the best of Spence the last few months.
He looked wretched on the last pitch, but he actually had a couple of really good swings before that, I thought.
The guy’s pitching a no-hitter, I don’t think Spencer’s looked all that bad.
The fact that it’s a one run game is actually pretty cool. It’s just one run. It could happen.
Portentous.
Rasmussen last 13.2 ip vs Yankees-one hit
Why in the fuck are they taking Weathers out?! Did he pitch too well, Boone?!
Ugh
You’re kidding me. Why would they take WEATHERS out? How much more stretched out could you be?
The only thing I can think of is that they are trying to turn Weathers into a short man for the playoffs, in which case they want to keep him at one inning a game.
Yeah, but he’s totally used to pitching more. Right now why run through all your pitchers?
They have a day off tomorrow. I don’t HATE it.
They sure love to throw balls to Walls.
Let me put it this way:
if they lose, it doesn’t matter who pitched.
And it’s a one run game, all too easy to see this game going to extras.
You want your pitchers for THIS game.
And the day off tomorrow is just as much an argument to let Weathers pitch another inning!
They want Weathers available for Game 2. If he pitched two tonight, he probably wouldn’t be available for Game 2 even with the day off. Basically, they want to make Weathers be their third short man ahead of Bednar, joining Blackburn and Headrick. I think that makes sense.
The Lane.
I’m Aaron Boone, and I do what I do.
Yes, I know you, Aaron Boone.
Second time my feed has shit the bed. Modern technology, baby.
I can live with a 1-0 playoff loss. A 1-0 no-hit playoff loss? That’s rooooooooooough.
Way to make a one-pitch out, Jazz!
You have GOT to be kidding me.
YOU FUCKING IDIOT!
What in the fucking hell
What a fucking idiot
oh fuck off
Nothing beats Dominguez’s slide earlier this year, but that’s definitely up there in terms of the worst baserunning by a Yankee all season, and he does it in the 8th inning of a 1-0 playoff game.
Yes making the last out at third, and it’s not even close YOU DONT MAKE THE THIRD OUT AT THIRD YOU FUCKING IDIOT.
It’s just amazing in HOW dumb it was. You’re a slow runner, and, as noted, there are two outs, you’re not moving yourself into scoring position, what are you DOING?!
It sounds like that that was on Rojas. Can you fire a third base coach mid playoff game?
I just can’t believe he did that.
It’s not about the 3rd out at 3rd. It’s not a strategic error.
It’s so much simpler and more obvious than that. Forget the “principle.”
It’s that it’s a ONE-RUN GAME, AND IT’S ALMOST OVER, AND YOU’VE JUST PUT A RUNNER IN POSITION TO SCORE, AND – MOST OBVIOUSLY – there was NO POSSIBLE WAY HE WAS EVER GOING TO BE SAFE AT THIRD.
And on top of that, Boone now keeps Blackburn out there, so why did he pull Weathers earlier just to extend Blackburn now?!
No matter how bad a 3B coach is, he’ll never be as bad as Dale Sveum’s Yankees tenure.
I’m glad I didn’t watch whatever the hell that was.
It was just…. unbeLIEvable.
As bad as it was, I can’t front, I’m just glad they weren’t no-hit. I can live with a 1-0 loss to Drew Rasmussen. Just win the non-Rasmussen games and they’ll be fine.
Does Aaron Boone teach STUPID. We embarrassed ourselves against LA in the World Series.
Stupid Yankees baserunning strikes again. Wells, no, just no, but you did.
Also, if you’re going to walk Caminero, which I don’t even hate, just IBB him.
Yep.
“And on top of that, Boone now keeps Blackburn out there, so why did he pull Weathers earlier just to extend Blackburn now?!”
Boone is a professional. He picked up on this being a special night for bearded redheads.
Luis Rojas was holding up Austin Wells the entire time. A terrible decision Wells will have to live with forever.
https://x.com/TalkinYanks/status/2106546361844048093
Making it even worse.
Wow. Okay, Austin Wells is just a lunatic, is the only answer.
Headrick, what the fuck, dude?!
That was as inexplicably STUPID as anything I’ve seen in a playoff game, maybe forever. Cole not covering first was terrible, but he froze for a second. This was just SUB MORONIC.
It really was crazy, especially considering the game context.
Headrick has Hicks 0-2, then walks him. Oh my.
Not the time to lose the plate, dude.
The craziest part to me was that there was NOTHING SPECIAL about that ball in the outfield. It bounced right to the guy. How is that the ball Wells thinks he’s gonna make it to third on? what POSSIBLE REASON!?
Looking at him while running, I don’t think he even LOOKED. I think he was just thinking triple out of the box, like a lunatic.
You gotta pinch hit Stanton here, right?
Exactly. It probably never occurred to anybody besides Wells that it was a triple.
In fairness, it would have been Stanton coming up for his first at-bat since April with two outs, so he probably would have been stranded, regardless.
Fasten your seatbelts, there may be some more Yankees baserunning ahead.
I legit don’t like Baker for them. I think he can be beat. I would just let Rasmussen close this shit out.
If you bet Stanton would strikeout. Go to the window.
He took some decent cuts, though, honestly.
I wonder what the price on a strikeout was?
Boy, do the Yankees love taking called strike three.
Obviously, you hate the loss, but I can live with it. Just need to Mike Scott Rasmussen. Win the games he doesn’t pitch, and using Cole now gives them three really good pitchers for the other four games.
But yes, that Austin Wells double will live forever in Yankees infamy.
-500000, give or take a few zeroes.
I expected nothing from Stanon, which is what we got.
Ben Rice, you CANNOT take a called third strike.
Welp. A loss sucks. So be it. Close game, got beat. Seeya Monday.
Boone will say we want our players to be aggressive. But what can he say?
Maybe he should admit it was a mistake by Wells.
Yeah, dang, Boone, what the heck? Just cop to the fuckup.
Whatever.
Someone is a cockeyed optimist.
With the stupid schedule Rasmussen can start game 4 and relieve game 5.
Sure, but that’s fine, just have a lead in Game 5.
Or have some of these hits fall in in Game 4. They had SEVEN balls hit 99 MPH or better against Rasmussen. He pitched really well at times, but they also hit him hard a lot with nothing to show for it besides Wells’ idiotic double.
Boone now back under 500 for his Yankee managerial career.
Katie S Teams with 1 Hit or fewer, 12+ Strikeouts and 2 or fewer Walks in a postseason game:
2026 Yankees (ALDS Gm 1)
2000 Mariners (ALCS Gm 4)
Think about it this way. Let’s say Rodon starts and pitches well. They probably still beat the Yankees behind this Rasmussen performance, right? Heck, let’s say CAM pitched tonight. They probably still win off of that Rasmussen performance. So it’s almost good that they got their “bad” pitcher out of the way in a game they were going to lose no matter who started it for them.
Could see Rasmussen in game 4 and relief game 5. Generally got to beat good pitchers to win the World Series. The team they beat in 96 had a pretty good rotation.
Hopefully they DO hit Rasmussen better later in the series. They tagged him for six runs earlier this season, ya know? And they hit him hard tonight, just right at guys.
Also, the 1996 Yankees had a better offense than this year’s Yankees, and that’s not even bringing the Judge of it all into consideration.
This was a microcosm of so much of the Judge-less part of the season.
Look, if Rasmussen is better than Schlittler and pretty much on a par with Sandy Koufax for the rest of this series, the Yankees still could win, but it would be a tough order.
I don’t really think Rasmussen actually is better than Schlittler, let alone on a par with Sandy Koufax, though.
Koufax didn’t have to face Spence or Jazz or Trent or MacMahon
Wells surprisingly not owning it. I assumed he WOULD, but nope, he’s saying that he was just being aggressive, and that getting to third was important because the field there “plays fast,” so he might not be able to score from second on a single.
Wow, very unusual.
WEAK! “Thought it kicked off more than it did, he made a good play on the ball. Two outs there, trying to make something happen, be aggressive with not much going on in the game. Obviously, love to safe there or standing on second base.”
– Austin Wells
SO weak. Just admit you fucked up.
This is your Aaron Boone logic instilled into the Yankees team.
I heard some weird theory about the Wells running, that makes sense to me. He didn’t stop because he knew Boone would take him out for a pinch runner. What do you think? That would be even worse.
I believe him when he says he thought he saw it bounce around in the corner as he passed first (which it did to a certain extent, just not THAT much), and he just thought he’d have an easy triple.
He was just plain ‘ol stupid.
If we can hold ‘em to one run per game I like our chances.
