From Bryan Hoch:
The Yankees knew Max Fried wouldn’t be able to go deep into the game, but the left-hander’s return to the mound offered encouragement that their roster was becoming more whole. That was tempered by George Lombard Jr.’s early exit.
Fried tossed 63 pitches over 3 2/3 innings, and the Yankees stroked 13 singles to fuel an early rally and late surge, securing a split of a separate-admission doubleheader with a 9-2 victory over the Red Sox on Saturday evening at Yankee Stadium.
The division rivals have split their 12 games this season, setting up Sunday’s 1:35 p.m. ET contest to determine a potential playoff tiebreaker.
Lombard sustained the injury during a second-inning at-bat, appearing to tweak his right knee on a checked swing. Lombard remained in the game and stroked a single, but was lifted in the fourth inning. The Yankees said Lombard would undergo imaging on Saturday at New York-Presbyterian.
They truly cannot keep doing this fucking, “Hey, Paul Blackburn, save us every time we need it!” shit. He has been an absolute STUD, and since he was a starter for so many years (and, because, let’s face it, it took Boone MONTHS to trust him), he is actually really well-rested, and thus he is much more reliable than the worn out as fuck Brent Headrick, who is still pretty good himself, but not NEARLY to the same level as Blackburn.
Tim Hill is slowly pitching his way back into the Circle of Trust, and Yerry has been good. I hope that they get Justin Topa back after he clears waivers. They only need Elmer for Monday. Then they can send Elmer down, and re-sign Topa.
I am a bit concerned about Fried’s velocity, but in general, he seemed fine.
The opening game was terrible offense, but Rodon was fine. Ali Sanchez I want to send into the fucking moon (Mitch Garver, are you really THAT bad of a defensive catcher?), but otherwise, that game was mostly just about bad hitting.
A tricky thing is that if Lombard is “day to day,” they can’t activate McMahon yet, and so they’ll be playing without a backup shortstop for the next couple of days, and so if Cabby gets hurt, they would have to…hmmm…I guess in that scenario, you play Jazz at short, right? Garcia would play second.
Hopefully Lombard doesn’t have to go to the IL, which would see a return of Anthony Volpe, #5 hitter against lefties.
It’s funny, a split of this series, which they’ve now guaranteed, is pretty fucking good, but because of that shitty four-game sweep in Fenway, a series split means they lose the SEASON series, and thus lose the tiebreaker with Boston, which is berry berry bad.
Paul “Fuck you, I rule” Blackburn walking off of the mound after being the motherfucking man gets the featured image.
“The season series with the Red Sox turns on…Will fucking Warren vs. Ranger Suarez?!”
Good fucking luck.
First of all, they have to give Headrick a full week’s rest.
He’s already not as good, and he’ll be gassed trash by the playoffs.
A few of those single were how shall we say lucky.
phenom played 3b last night at Scranton.
Oh, good Lord.
They’ve come up with a worse thing than the things I’d already been imagining!
Gil up, Yerry down. I imagine it’s only temporary, but let’s see how Gil does today. Maybe you use him as an opener?
That’s a great idea. And if he kicks ass, leave him in as long as you can.
But seriously – put Headrick on the (fake) IL.
Not because he sucks now, but because he was great and I don’t want him to suck when it counts.
Boston gets some guys back
